« Children don’t get traumatised because they are hurt; they get traumatised because they are alone with their hurt. » This was the cause of my lifelong depression, but being able to hear Dr Maté is finally helping me to understand myself and to heal! Thank you Dr Maté!

I can very much relate to being alone in my childhood pain. I was an only child with nowhere to go, so the pain got locked inside my body and soul.😢

Total nonsense...children are traumatized even if they're not alone.

@@robynhope219I think you may have missed the point - a child can be traumatised in a room with 20 people - what is essential is that there is one witness to their pain, one person who will notice a child has been hurt and help that child to process their feelings - before it becomes a wound that gets deeper over time. Most of my childhood trauma occurred in a classroom with over 30 kids and one adult - I was often deeply humiliated in front of everyone, so I had to suppress my feelings and could not express them at home either because home was dysfunctional - alcoholic father, martyred mother, abuse on every level. There needs to be one compassionate adult, just one. Many children don’t have that.

Listening to Dr Maté over the past two years has helped me change my life! I was a sensitive kid who experienced mostly the second type of trauma Dr Maté talks of: not being seen or accepted for who I was. My father had believed that spanking was acceptable because I picked fights all the time with my little sister; he later used a leather strap as I grew bigger. But, I know now that my parents had had their own traumas growing up and didn’t know how to meet my EMOTIONAL needs - and still, they did the very best they could as parents. I even grew up as a ‘good’ kid, who tried not to step out of line and who worked hard at school (rarely ‘seen’ there also), but my depression deepened as I grew older. I have sought therapy throughout my life, but it has only been by listening to Dr Maté, that I have finally understood how my own traumas influenced my beliefs about myself not being a good enough person. Now, I allow myself to reconnect to the lost, rejected and abandoned parts of myself, to let myself FEEL that young, vulnerable child again, and to give myself the love that my parents were not able to give me. I hope that you can find your own way, too! The journey is worth it! ❤️ Please keep up this good work with your videos! I am a retired primary teacher who was always there for my kids, even emotionally, because I understood how lonely many kids are! We need to be the community that helps to raise every child because society makes it hard for many parents to do this alone!

What a blessing this man is! Having come from a family that seemed to have "issues" of all kinds that is seen thru the generations and trying to understand my immediate family and then myself, I dug deep into the subconscious understanding, and things began to make sense. We are not taught about our "programming" (sub-con) and what is "really" causing behavior. Most adults don't understand what is causing their own behavior much less that of anyone else, and that means medical professionals, teachers, etc. It is so important to point out that with children it is always important to look at what's going on in the family.

teachers should be allowed to help students GROW through play..what he says about kids having no time with their parents- so they make their facebook friends their peer group and how un-healthy that is- is right on point." a deep WOUND for kids is lack of nurturing from adults" in this society of stressed parenting- where is the TIME to spend with and love kids? this changes the out most trajectory of their lives

Great Talk by Dr Gabor Mate. Thank you. a few questions: I consider myself a.very loving mother that emotionally abused her children by taking about (adult issues) mine and by drinking way too much as it came with the job. Deep down I’m I good woman whose main priority is relationships- I like other things too- but, love makes the world go round. My family is still very loving and intact and we are bumbling along with responsibilities, but have immense love for each other, although we be all been hurt at some time or another. I see this type of behavior in a lot of families and they remain intact and friends. Where is the line drawn between human behavior, forgiveness and Trauma?0

It may mean that governments are not interested in a mentally healthy and educated society! If so, wouldn’t some of them have made some moves to upgrade what we have now? In fact, it appears to me they are dismantling education in America, except the tech parts!

I can tell you as a programmer of ~18 years, tech will also fail before long. My idiot co-workers continually chase the increase in complexity "because Google does it", or ego, etc. Plus, documentation, so-called, is generally absolute shit. There will be a few people that can maintain the pace, but eventually, it will collapse on us all.

Dr. Maté you are a gem. I found you just a few months ago. I work at life every day- in a light hearted way and manage my childhood emotional neglect. I am sooo happy to understand it. My mother when she got old weighed everything by " Will this matter in 10 yrs?" I liken that you your last response- Will it matter? That is a great and positive way to look at life every day and it brings me to a quiet reflection about what is going on = a calm response rather than a reaction. Thank you again. I would love to hear you speak in person. ❤

Whenever I listen to Dr. Maté's explanation of trauma I remember back in high school I took a class called Psycho-biology, and the teacher apparently was a psychologist. She emphatically taught us that there was no such thing of the term trauma in Psychology, because trauma was only a physiological phenomenon referrered as physical wound. How would have guessed!?

Gabor has never claimed that the correct nurturing erases all future trauma. He is saying that giving the correct nurturing to a young child ensures they do not have trauma around their nurturing needs. You also say “indigenous” communities as though they’re a homogenous group. Different indigenous communities face different challenges.
