Until a few years ago, I didn’t believe there were any songs inside me, and certainly none that anyone else would want to hear. Learning to stop all the chatter in my head and find a quiet place inside myself helped me unearth some of the creativity I knew when I was much younger. When I spend time in the woods, listening to the birds and watching the light filter through the leaves, I find it even easier to find that stillness.
These are the moments when my songs seem to stir into life, somewhere inside me. My challenge is to set them free.
Where the songs live
There’s a place that I have found,
A place where I retreat,
Where the chatter and the clatter
Of my thoughts are left behind.
So I travel down the winding,
Twining byways of my brain
And find the door ajar
To this refuge in my mind.
This is where the songs live
This is where the songs live
Somewhere inside of me.
This is where the songs live
This is where the songs live
And I’m setting them free. x2
And this is where the songs live,
Where they incubate and grow,
Fashioned from the oddments
And the fragments of my days.
Many will remain here,
And rest within this nest
While others will grow wings
And fly away, fly away.
This is where the songs live
This is where the songs live
Somewhere inside of me.
This is where the songs live
This is where the songs live
And I’m setting them free. x2
Threads of thought
Fragile flights of fancy
Dancing to the sounds of distant melodies.
They sing to me at night
And wake me in the morning,
Practising their newborn harmonies…
This is where the songs live
This is where the songs live
Somewhere inside of me.
This is where the songs live
This is where the songs live
And I’m setting them free. x2
