Kirkman said that they rushed things, especially at the beginning of the comics, because they didn't really know how long the comics could last. If he could rewrite the beginning he would have given more time to the Shane topic in particular. Should be in one of the deluxe editions.

a cool detail about the page at 9:17 is that in the background you can see a zombie with a Y shaped cut on his stomach and chest. this cut is used in autopsies, to open up the chest cavity, so its a fun little detail they put in the comic that makes you think of how scared shitless the coroners were

No shade to Adleard but Moores art was what drew me into the walking dead universe. Just seeing how visceral the undead looked in his style. Just like another long forgotten zombie comic i read called "the abandonded" by Scott Campbell. A great read on what couldve been a great zombie story if not for what tokyopop did to that comic. Much love to moore as i understand that he was one to take time with his art compared to Adelard. What we got in the end is still iconic and he manages to capture the serious mood of the survivors with the intense shadows in his line work.

I love how this story started off as a smal little lie and turned into such a beautiful story. Days Gone Bye will be one of my favorite volumes since it was the beginning of it all. The show's version was the best especially since all the characters but the comics still have a special place in my heart. Shane's story told in the show was beautiful and not rushed like the comics. I enjoyed this video nonetheless! Looking forward to more of the comics being explained

When I was 9, I went shopping to our local Tesco with my dad a police officer. When we entered the magazines and books aisle, I saw the red book. I was very interested by the apocalypse theme and I played a lot of zombie flash games on the internet, so I asked my dad if he would buy me the book, and he agreed. I read it in one day and then I couldnt sleep for 3 months, when I closed my eyes I still saw the mutilated corpses with flies everywhere. But still, it made me obsessed with the genre, and to this day I love the story, I am just sad that Tony Moore drew only the first volume, because his artstyle is 1000x better then Adlard's.

I actually kind of prefer the comic version of Shane over the show and think that it's actually more realistic. It just feels a lot more grounded, natural, and organic with the way it plays out. Imagine if you're camping out in the woods in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. There would probably be that one guy who is convinced that the government and military are coming to stop the outbreak and rescue them to the point that he's just delusional and completely blind to the reality of the situation, and once he realizes that they're not and the government has more than likely collapsed, he just can't handle the truth that the world has basically ended because he's so in denial and just has a complete mental breakdown. The comics also focused a lot more on the psychological impact that the apocalypse has on people and how it deteriorates their mental health, and Shane is an example of how it can alter even good people's morality and make them do things you never could've imagined they would do. Him trying to kill Rick was a lot more creepy and unsettling in the comics because he just suddenly snaps and goes absolutely insane. Plus, Rick and Tyreese's friendship wouldn't have worked as well if Shane was kept around longer.

I agree with you about the show being better than the comic with the first season. Shane snapping and losing it so fast. I didnt expect him to be offed by Carl even before they left camp. Also, Amy's death was sadder in the show because of her reanimation and Andrea's reaction. While I like comic Andrea waaaay better, the first season Andrea in the show was really good imo. I agree everything moved way too fast in the first volume. It also slowed by the prison arc in the comics. The show did a lot better, and that was definitely character development and drama. At the time, and still to this day, I thank Walking Dead for making a zombie story that focused on humans and how they would react in the situation. Plenty of zombie media before TWD were mostly just action horror where we witness a bunch of underdeveloped people just go from set piece to set piece until they are picked off. While there is nothing wrong with it, I always found it hard to care about these characters dying because at most we'd get 5 minutes in the beginning where the story humanizes them and that's it. TWD made me care for these characters, so I'd actually get upset when one of the longer staring characters kicked the bucket.

13:07 I love this story but it's absurd to think rain (even heavy rain) would wash away the smell so quickly that it would be an issue. This was obviously a way to lessen the likelihood of characters being able to always do this trick to avoid all walkers but it's a bit lazy from a writing prospective. All in all this concept shouldn't have been explored this early on into the comic, cause it does beg the question...why not do it literally all the time? Like the whisper group. The shear number of times this knowledge would've saved someone...; it pretty much would've ended the apocalypse imo.

honestly, im surprised not alot of people bring up kirkmans ""style"" of writing, its quite similar to emil pagliarulo, abd they act very similar when confronted about their awful choices of story. ie, kirkman prefering to skip over the start of the apocalypse after showing what its like, just so we can get right to the "muh survivel uv da feetist" crap kirkman loves, boring human vs human conflict instead of human vs zombie. oh, and the whole "theres no zombie stories either" is complete and utter bs because, culturally speaking, the entire world has been influenced by culture & myths since 4500bce. people not being able to think of zombies or anything similar to them, shows a weird lack of imagination and narrow-sightedness, something that 100% shouldve played into the story, like not being able to think of how to deal with walkers by covering yourself in blood & actual poop, the earlier seasons couldve been interesting. imagine a world where no actually one knows what zombies are, because that isnt the walking dead, i swear everyone becomes survivalist experts within a few days of the apocalypse 😅 no trial and error, just "quick we gotta keep the story moving! keep it simple, just make everyone instantly know how to deal with zombies in a world where those dont exist purely due to writers preference."
