Hi! I'm from China. We divide Blythe like dolls into mainly 5 types. Authentic dolls: They are real Blythe dolls. Each authentic doll has her own name, box, story and so on. An authentic doll's body has only 5 joints and bendable legs, just like basic Barbie dolls. And authentic dolls have several different face molds. I highly recommend Blythe lovers to buy authentic dolls. Factory dolls: In the past some workers in the Blythe factory took away authentic doll parts(usually slightly defective) and put them together. This kind of dolls is called factory dolls and they are less expensive than authentic ones. They have the same quality as authentic ones but they are SMUGGLED ITEMS. Since the factory has moved away, completed factory dolls are very rare now. If you wanna buy a factory doll from someone, don't forget to ask him and figure out each part of it is from which doll. Fake dolls(high imitations): They are made from RBL face molds in an unknown factory, unlike the factory dolls are made in the original Blythe factory. Most of the so-called factory dolls you can buy today are in fact fake dolls. Fake dolls are nude(sometimes with low quality clothings) and have usually 2 body type options: One is 5 joint body just like authentic dolls and the other one is fake Azone body with 19 joints. Fake dolls(low imitations): They are the cheapest ones. They usually have low quality clothings and boxes but on the box the brand is not Blythe but a strange name like Bassak. The material they use is of low quality and quite different from authentic dolls. Similar dolls of other brands: Dolls like Icy and JecciFive. They have different face molds from Blythe but still look very similar. We can consider them as imitations too.

The original Blythe doll was a toy, not an art doll. An art doll that is copied illegally is like stealing from the artist as happens with art bjd dolls. The Blythe doll, since it is a toy would have a patent or trademark. These trademarks protect the inventor, but are not forever. If the trademark is not renewed after 10 years, you no longer own it. A patent is granted for 20 years and after that it becomes part of the public domain. I see no problem in buying a “fake” Blythe doll as long as you know it is not an authentic Blythe doll. Customizing a fake is still art and has its own value above a plain “fake”. Correct me if I am wrong . I don’t own any of these dolls, but now that I have seen them….I want one!

Original and copies is what it should be called . Your entitled to your opinion without upsetting enthusiastic collectors who have probably over spent and need to justify their spending crazy amounts . Only like customs I see the art and admire it .

I’m kind of new to Blythe but I have a Blythe I have had for awhile and when I no longer has clothes. Not sure where they are so I don’t know if she’s real or factory. She’s not fake. She is a Blythe 2006 with blue hair. I’m definitely going to start out with the fake ones but do have these and don’t want to tell someone that I have something wrong. I like to be honest. I have a mini with a box but my regular Blythe does not have a box. I’m a throw the box away person so I would not have kept that. Also thanks for the Ali shop recommendation.

I have a question about buying authentic vs inauthentic. For someone who wants to get into collecting blythe dolls, but has yet to do so, how would a new buyer know if they are buying an authentic doll? I'm asking because I've heard (and I'm sure most people have) about buying things from places like Ebay and Amazon and thinking your buying the "real deal" because the ad title says its authentic and everything in the product description says its authentic. I know these sellers are obviously purposely lieing so they can charge more than they could if they said it was actually fake ... which is the whole reason they want the buyer to think it's an authentic item..I notice you mostly see this with hand bags. So what I'm asking is how would someone new to collection these dolls know if they where purchasing a fake? Are there specific details to look for that would give it away as being a fake doll? Thanks in advance to anyone who could give me some tips on what to look for when purchasing? 😊

Hi there! If you are buying a doll new on the box then you should have confidence you're getting the real deal. If you are buying a nude doll it can be trickier. There are many who can identify an authentic right away based on the mold. All fakes are rbl mold. For me I can usually tell by the hair. The hair quality is drastically different between fakes and authentics, with the authentic dolls having lower quality hair ironically. There are Blythe groups on Facebook where you can ask "hey is this doll for sale on Ebay real?" and many can help you right away. My advice if you want to collect authentics is to buy from reputable sites and buy the dolls mint in the box. It is the best way to know for sure.

Another very informative video, thanks! I hope you won't mind me asking: why would you buy an authentic doll? What is the main difference between fake and authentic(factory)? Also, as a new collector -and hopefully customizer, soon- I'm confused and genuinely interested to understand, when you talk about getting a rather "cheap" authentic doll on FB that has already been matted, altered, with a body that doesn't interest you since you will change it? What do you pay for in the end?

hello! There is an ethical question when it comes to "fakes". There are many artists that won't work with fakes because the factories producing the fake dolls do not have a license to do so and it is essentially theft. With that in mind others argue that you shouldn't use authentics as they should stay pristine. And further since you are completely changing the doll, it is essentially just a base and shouldn't matter. Quality-wise I don't notice much difference in the plastic but in general the hair quality on fakes is better as well as a larger range of skin tones. It can just be a sensitive subject in the community so I always recommend treading lightly when bringing up the issue of fakes. ;)

are the parts interchangeable between the blythe fake dolls and all the real dolls?
@BeBeDolls

Not always...the fakes are the RBL mold (all of the fakes are) so if you are changing pieces with an authentic RBL then you should be fine but if you have an authentic of a different mold/style it might not fit. I don't have a list of what fits and what doesn't but there is a great group on Facebook called Blythe Customization and this question gets asked a lot so if you encounter it you can check there. ;)

Isn't the authentic doll the 1973 Kenner Blythe? So are the ones you are referring to as authentic made by a company that has relicenced the right to reproduce the Blythe doll? The Aliexpress are knockoff clones that are similar but are not licenced? I'm sorry, just trying to get it straight in my mind.

Yes you've got it right! Takara was the company licensed to sell the current ones but they just sold it to a different company I can't remember the name of. Things may be changing but we'll see!

May i ask how much is a customized authentic blythe and how much a customized fake blythe? Thanks in advance!!
@BeBeDolls
3 жыл бұрын
Totally depends on the artist and their popularity. In general (and this is is very general) customized fakes are around $200-$500. Customized authentic dolls usually range from $500-$3000 again depending on the artist however the big thing to consider is that authentic dolls usually start at around $150 for the base and most are $200+...fakes usually are around $20-$65 so the base materials are cheaper in general. All of this can vary but artist, materials used, etc. :)

Hi new sub here! I went to the junie moon website and it’s not even in US dollars? Also, how much is an authentic brand new Blythe doll typically?
@BeBeDolls
3 жыл бұрын
It really varies...you can find authentic dolls on Ebay without their box/stock for around $150 or so...a brand new one in the box, etc is on average $200 but can be up to $500-$600...just depends on the doll and demand. :)

Do you think paying over $200 for a fake custom Blythe is way too much money?....upper 200s too 😬
@BeBeDolls
3 жыл бұрын
I think the price for a custom depends on the artist and the quality of the work...not so much the base doll. The truth is the time to make a custom is about the same whether it is a fake or an authentic doll. The difference in supply price between the 2 may be approx $100 but the labor time is the same. Soooo my long winded answer is no I don't think that is too much if you like the work done :D
