@randytongue

Having a relationship with God starts with understanding your standing before God. You’ve sinned against Him (Romans 3:10, 23), so you are guilty and deserving of His holy wrath. Jesus, who is God the Son, lived the righteous life that we can’t live, and He died on the cross to take the punishment for sin. 3 days later, He defeated death and was vindicated in His resurrection. Everyone who will turn from sin and place their full trust in Jesus will have their sin forgiven and have His righteousness credited to them. We are dead in sin, but through Christ we may have eternal life.

When I started I went for the Gospel of Luke (easier to understand then John's) and Philippians (joyful and good lessons, again "easier" then those in James) good options to not get discouraged in the beginning (in my opinion 🤭)

I just wanted to say thank you so much. I’m thirteen and I feel like I’ve been drifting away from god. I really want to get closer with him, and I’m looking up bible studies in order to do that! My New Year’s resolution was to spend a half an hour on school mornings, first thing after I wake up, with god. Journaling from scriptures, praying, or bible studies. On weekends I want to take an hour first thing. I want to do this because I want god to be my priority and I want to spend time with him before I do anything else. It puts me in a good mood because I know he’s always there. Life has been hard lately and believing in Him is making things a lot easier.

I think that okay! .. I would like the spin the issue and say, knowing where to read may not be the more pressing issue than understanding the ancient cultural context of the people, places, and times which is important for grasping what is actually going on in a particular story within the Bible. In other words, when God reveals himself to people, he does so in exactly the language, concepts, and cultural context of those specific people. So for you to understand the significance of the Bible in our time, and where to begin to read, we have to understand the ancient contexts and language and concept’s of these texts within their own time- and this can be done, while reading it! When you open up your Bible, your not reading a golden tablet that fell out of the sky haha. Historically, you are interacting with a vast collection of ancient scrolls 📜 and writings that were produced amongst an ancient people group within the Ancient near east. A small select group of and prophets, great and lesser men, those instructed in the study of their literature and in the instruction of their God where used by their God to preserve, organize and skillfully craft in completion the history and story of their people- while it was happening within a whole millennium! And now thanks to the invention of the codex in the 3rd century B.C, which eventually paved the way for the printing press in 1436, this large library of scrolls 📜 and letters are accessible to us in one book 📖 filled with pages. These things you most definitely should know, so that you may have the proper categories, thoughts and assumptions in your mind so that you may be properly equipped in immersing yourself in the Bible. Don’t get me wrong, these collections of scrolls and letters are woven together by many ancient Israeli authors and breathed by God’s spirit in such a way where they speak to every generation of God’s covenant people, calling them to faithfulness, perseverance and baring a steadfast confident expectation of the future. But what they’re not is a self help book. So it’s “application” is very different since it’s done by the kind of literature it possesses, not by being a “life coach manual”. For example, it’s full of poems and narrative and retellings that are rich in metaphors. There’s collective works of instructions within a particular context, but the whole work is wisdom literature- meant to make us wise and discerning, being able to live in Gods good world through His Messiah, in whom the whole Bible points to. So know this first then we can continue, the Bible is a unified story that leads to Jesus. It’s all too easy to treat the Bible like a reference book, a resource for deriving theological truths, moral principles, or encouraging sentiments. While the Bible does provide those things, if we primarily interact with it as a reference book, we will miss the bigger story it’s telling. Reference books only impart information. Wisdom literature like the Bible is designed to form certain kinds of people through convictions that become a part of their character. The Bible is ancient Jewish literature that is artistically designed to interpret itself and encourage a lifetime of re-reading and reflection. Because the Bible was designed as a collection, each part was crafted with an eye toward what comes later, precisely to anticipate and foreshadow themes and ideas that are developed later in the story. According to Psalm 1, we become like the things we ponder and imagine. The wisdom and beauty of the Torah is so profound that continuous meditation upon it turns humans into sources of vitality like the tree of life itself. And finally, because the Bible was written in another time and culture, we need to honor its ancient historical context as we come to understand it better. It’s important to recognize the culture of the biblical authors, as well as our own culture, when we read the Bible. Often, if something in the Bible feels offensive or strange to us, it’s because it’s conflicting with our own cultural norms. Also, the more we familiarize ourselves with the meanings of the Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic words used by the biblical authors, the more we will expand our own encyclopedias to understand their meaning accurately. So it doesn’t mean you have to learn a new language, but it means to be aware that these scrolls were not written in English, either English rules. Thus we should invite ourselves into word studies seeing the rich and dense meanings of words like “love”, “heart” and “soul” and “strength”, so that we can know what’s being meant when God’s covenant people are called to “love the LORD your God with all of your heart, soul and strength”.
