As an IDPA shooter with an XC I would love to see a similar test with the XC shooting 147's just making power factor and compare those to the 95 and 115's at power factor.
@texasranger24
7 ай бұрын
The problem with "power factor" is that it isn't power. At all. Like, it's physically wrong. It's mass times velocity. That's the impulse, not energy. Energy would have velocity squared. So that's why the "power" factor is really biased towards heavier pills, as it's really impulse. If it was really power, it would be heavily biased towards 50gr +p loads (not allowed, minimum weight, i know).
@simonizedpb
7 ай бұрын
Yes, the term is incorrect, but that doesn't negate the value of testing which option is the best shooting option to make "power factor" for IDPA once you add on the effect of the compensator. I am currently running 147's but about to load some faster 115's and thinking about buying some 95's and trying them. The 147's I reload have been significantly better than any factory 115' or 114's, but I haven't reloaded my own 115's and 95's to minimum "power factor"... Yet.

@@simonizedpb 149gr gamer loads that are barely above squib are usually more pleasant if you don't have a comp. If you have a multi champer comp, go as light as allowed and put some serious pressure behing it to work that comp.

This pretty much confirms my experience with the Radian ramjet. The 115s seemed fine and I expected 124 Natos to improve it even more. I got a lot more felt recoil, but it felt like it cycled faster so I could get back on target faster. Idk. I think my take away is if you decide to comp a gun, take the time to tune and test your ammo/springs.

When I was shooting my aftermarket P320 with a Springer Precision two-port screw-on compensator I tried shooting some Inceptor RNP frangible ammo on a lark. It’s a 65gr bullet moving nearly 1,700 FPS. The gun was so flat and soft shooting you wouldn’t have known it’d gone off if not for the deafening boom it made with each shot. Normally for a “carry comp” style pistol though I found 124gr NATO/+P loads to be the happy medium between recoil reduction and reliability

Last year, I modified my shield plus , in 9mm. Installed a 3.6" threaded barrel and a samson pocket comp. That added a half inch of barrel length, and with the comp, it's about the same size as the 4" version. It feels better in a holster now(resisting the push of my belly). Maybe a slight gain in velocity, and it took the edge off its snappines. It functions with all ammo tried, but in light 115 gr reloads, it doesn't lock back after the last round. It has been worthwhile to me.

Great test. This is some actually new information out there. If you want to do this even more extreme, maybe include something like 50gr Liberty +p, 90gr, 124 and 149gr duty +p and then 185gr +m. And compare the energy, "power factor" (which really should be called impulse as it isn't velocity squared), and the recoil in a gun with and without compensator. Or gamer loads barely designed to meet a certain energy or power factor, is higher or lower weight better, compensated or not?

You forget that the low felt recoil is paramount for us seniors with severe arthritis. Whether we shoot fast or a little slower. You might say it helps us 1) keep shooting longer 2) helps us shoot faster than we otherwise would have been able to 3) helps us maintain much better accuracy at every distance. 4) we may not compete in general (JM notwithstanding) But it is an activity we can continue to have fun with. 5) in general, this was somewhat informative, especially the muzzle flip graphic. 6) I’d like to see you compare them to a few non-compensated low recoil guns as well (e.g. RIA 5.0E, Q5 Match Pro SF, FK BRNO)

I've been messing with carry comps for about a couple years. Most of the single ports designed for carry guns...they just kind of work, BUT they aren't terribly effective compared to race comps. I've been messing with a middle if the road approach (killer innovations, etc, etc). Maybe you could do a video about tuning a gun for RELIABILITY on some of the more aggressive/effective comps with our carry ammo? I usually just find the lightest spring that runs the gun (clean) 100%, the heaviest spring that runs 100%....and choose something in between. So my 3.9 sig slide will run on a 12#-15# spring, so I just split the difference and run a 13#. Zero problems for a couple thousand rounds of hot-ish 115's and 124's (tight group or cfe pistol). But there has to be a more scientific way.

Couple of things. 1st if I do anything in life, I will own an XC one day. 2. With comps I think there are two things most people dont consider, first is how much the muzzle rises and second how fast it comes back down. Personally I like the faster Carry Ammo over the slower range ammo on my PMM equipped G45. The slide definitely moves faster but the comp does its job better on both sides of the equation. Could not agree more with your conclusions.
great video question if the powder was taken to long to burn would reloading with faster burning powder help ?

But...is anyone shooting a compensated pistol with factory loads? Outside of bullet weights and the respective change in power charge, I don't believe you are going to find enough difference to be noteworthy...until you get to handloads, where you'll find tons of difference. Using 9M as an example, we have tons of people loading easily with a modest charge of CFE, which IMO, works adequately at best. Then there are the folks probably loading slowly on something like a Dillon 550, where they can get away with a huge charge of something like 3n38, who have a legit +P+ book load that makes Major. The CFE loads will work a compensator okay and shoot somewhat soft. The 3n38 loads will work the crap out of the comp, shoot about as soft, but much flatter, with the dot rarely if ever even leaving an RTS. The reason why the the Shadow Systems gun worked best with the Nosler 115s is that they are basically super-light Limited loads. They use the comp to a very small degree at best (that type of comp barely does anything in my experience), so it's best for that because it's just a super soft load. The slide comp on the Sig is a tad better, enough to actually make a difference, but nothing near the effectiveness of even a single port comp of good, efficient design like the one on the Staccato. That is a properly designed and implemented compensator and it's no surprise that it prefers light bullets with larger charges of slower powder. Run a proper handload with a 115 and a huge charge of 3n38 for a life changing experience. Cool video with excellent photography and information.
