I was in college and one of the last Reiner recordings came out in the Readers Digest set. I wrote to Readers Digest and told them I couldn't afford the set. They sent me the recording of Brahms 4th symphony which did not appear again until they were redone by Chesky records in LP and CD. The quote was from Reiner that it was his most beautiful sounding recording.

I can't believe it...I thought when Mr. Fremer showed the Karajancollection "Oh, I would like that conducted by Leibowitz"...and then it came! Just compare the start of the 7th between Leibowitz and Karajan...Leibowitz is so precise, Karajan not really.

Your presentation here reminds me of when I was a kid back in 1959 and started mowing lawns in the neighborhood for a buck a pop. As a result of that income I began to buy classical music albums out of the bargain bin at the local WT Grant Co 5&10 store for 50 cents a piece and no sales tax. I wore those albums out on an old cheap record player and never once was disappointed in the quality. The imagination of the composers and skill of the conductors and musicians always came through. Thank you Mike for triggering those old memories.

Also, I remember as a young photo assistant walking into the studio and these cds were there - The great men of music. Wow! It opened up a whole new world for me. I bought a stereo and started to buy cd’s at tower records. The staff became my friends (Randy) for one. It was a magical experience to go alone and search for all this music I never heard before. I still have all my classical cds and still listen to the great men of music. And this is where I discovered Bach! Bach I listen to almost every day. Thank you for posting this video. Earlier this year I did a major splurge (for me, a retiree on social security, dipped a bit into the nest egg) and bought the Bernstein Centennial half-speed remastered box set (1666/1750). I have a modest, but good, stereo system. However, I wanted to hear the premier playing of the Symphony No. 9 on a system worthy of this pinnacle music. The Sound Environment of Omaha, Nebraska graciously accommodated an old customer and played all three sides on their current top system (Lyra Atlas/Graham Phantom/TechDAS A. F. III/VTL phono and line preamps/Gryphon class A amp/Wilson Alexxes) in a good room (Peter McGrath approved). It was wonderful. Even close to the edge of the High Plains, there remain a few independent brick and mortar dealers that will let you listen to the good stuff even though they know it is way above your (former, see above) pay grade. p.s. Earlier today I stopped at a local used record store and found a copy of the 6 disk Solti Gotterdammerung, London ffrr OSA 1604. He let me have it for $10.00 plus tax. Haven't listened to it yet, but it looks to be in pretty good shape. Sometimes the muses smile on you.

Loved your comment about the audience on the Bernstein recording. I moved to Vienna a couple of years ago and a big part of my choosing to move to Austria was the music and tangible sense of walking in the footsteps of the greats. I go to the musikverein a lot and remember how into the music the audiences are here. It’s serious stuff here and it’s not just the rich. Classical music is for everyone and one can pay as little as €6 to see top class performers there. I also managed to finagle my way into some private concerts held in a small medieval palace here. It’s incredible a low arched room lit only by candle light and anything post baroque is considered modern! I don’t know if you have ever been here but you must come and if you do, let me know, if one of those concerts are on when you are here then I will take you along with me. Free wine and nibbles and a very very eclectic crowd. The first time I went I ended up in conversation with an Italian Count a Cardinal visiting from Rome and a Scholar on Shakespeare!

I bought the George Szell set back in the mid-1970s. It's got that gritty Columbia, early 60s sound, but great performances in my view. Perfect tempo, between the speedy Toscanini and the sometimes lugubrious Klemperer. But I also have others, Toscanini's early 50s recordings of the 7th, 4th and 8th, Bernstein's 4th and 5th and Reiner's 9th (Chicago Symphony). There's so much to choose from.

The ones that I am buying in London charity shops (aka goodwills) indecently cheaply are splendid, and often come with expansive and novel packaging. May I also add, RD did some fantastic jazz boxes in the 1970s, early and swing jazz mostly. Although the graphics may look a little cheesy, the records are manufactured to a standard that compares well to any other label. Cheers from London, England!

7:50. I never heard a Fiedler led classical music recording I didn't like. He was a true musician..never overtly showy on the podium....and never one to "overinterpret" anything. His performances were just plain musical. One can, of course, cite the many short classical works he recorded...all gems...but a true case in point is his one recording of a complete symphony...that of Dvorak's 9th. It's one of the better ones, IMO.

So many fine Beethoven symphony boxes out there. Karajan 63 is NOT the best, but it has become the reference recording due to the heavy promotion. Performances are generally good, even if none are the best. Your other choices are spot on...save for Rattle, with whom I have little patience. But in Beethoven boxes, we have Wand, Walter, Bernstein, Szell, Cluytens, Klemperer, Leibowitz, and a host of others....not to mention the many "period" instrument boxes, some of which are quite fine.

Hi cuzzn Mikey. (me:Yid from Levittown PA, your age, on my 6th trntble). I found 2 different pressings of a Bach cantata recording, BWV 78, Jesu Der du Meine Seele, Richter cond. on Archive, Buckel and Topper are the 2 lady singers. The older, thick vinyl is missing hig freqs. I figured the master tape. But I have a later 1960 or 1970, thinner vinyl pressing, sounds way better, the highs are there. Then, I found Joseph Szigeti on Bach Guild, heavy original vinyl, the Bach violin partitas and sonatas. Sounds like Szigeti was not a very good violinist, sounds like he is sawying away. Then I have another later, thinner vinyl, on Historical Anthology of Music package still Bach Guild, Vanguard. Way better. He sounds like a legit very good violinist, not an semi-pro. Was quite an eye-opening comparison, epecially the Szigeti, a person could get a very poor idea of his skill. I'm hoping to get Campion Records U.K. to do some vinyl of Jewish Latvian soprano Inessa Galante. CDs were Debut, Heroines, Russian Recital Wigmore Hall, Jewish Folk Songs, ABC, Arietta. All y'all can find a lot of her on you tube if you look hard.

GERMAN WIKIPEDIA: The NSDAP in Salzburg joined Karajan on April 8, 1933 (membership number 1.607.525). He paid a recording contribution, but did not pay any follow -up contributions and moved to Germany, where a temporary membership card was issued in Ulm on May 30 in Ulm after a new application for admission; The new entry date was May 1, 1933 (member number 3.430.914). [12] In the course of the review of the Austrian contributions in the NSDAP headquarters in Munich in 1939, the first - Austrian - membership was finally formally declared invalid. Karajan, on the other hand, spread the inaccurate legend that he only entered the NSDAP in Aachen in 1935 at the request of the district manager in order to be able to become General Music Director. [13] [14] Oliver Rathkolb also contradicts the widespread assessment that Karajan had only joined the NSDAP for career reasons. In 1934, Karajan polemized in a letter to his parents against the Vienna Volksoper, where he did not want to conduct because it was a preliminary theater without a name, "the entire Palestine will also be collected there"

Classical Music deserves defending. The pompous attributions placed upon it have been done mostly by the tv & Hollywood. vE.G. Benny Goodman had his own weekly radio show in the 1950's (i guess) where he would always include one classical music work at the end at his own personal insistence upon being offered the show. When Hollywood made a Biopic about that same very famous Jazz musician, Benny Goodman which i saw (played by James Stewart ...quite likely) i laughed because i already read L.P. sleave notes & new all about B.Goodman's love of classical music but the film showed him turning up to his Orchestra job, storming in, tutting & moaning with a laboured & hard-done by look on his face, slamming doors, huffing when he put his clarinet down etc & then quitting the orchestra & getting a Jazz music band job, where he becomes all happy & smiley forever afterwards because he found his only love of music in Jazz. That's Hollywood for you creating divides, they just didn't want to show the concept that anyone could like classical music and jazz music, it had to be one or the other in Benny Goodman's Hollywood biopic. I don't understand at all why & cannot even start to figure that one out! . I started off likening just a few classical pieces, TV themes i'd look into, credits from films i'd study if i heard some good classical in them. & Prokofiev from school at 7 yrs old when a teacher played Peter & the wolf & i had to ask her "what was that lovely sound?" (or similar) & i started listening to BBC's radio 3 by 25 yrs old, (35/yrs ago) which still today plays Classical exclusively on F.M. is best, digital radio 3 does a low-key 96 - 128 B.P.S.!!! The many charity shops around my nearby city once had (until i got to them) loads of uber-cheap Classic LPs (nearly all in surprisingly newish or mint condition). I started buying them on spec, from 1980 till 2010'ish, at about £1 - £2 max each. some were 3 per each GB Pound sterling. For Beethoven, i liked his late quartets 12 - 16 & so bought every Beethoven LP i saw. (symph' no' 6 was everywhere ...but it's gr8, i prefer Sir Colin Davis & the L.S.O. version. I have about 4 or 5 versions because they were all Mint & so cheap, i ended up with 7 - 800 classical L.P.s that i'm still getting into, many or most to yet hear & it's great doing it since i retired. I was buying far more each pay-day than i could keep up with And it was the best thing i ever did in my life ...musically speaking! I recently bought an AT Mono3/LP cartridge & was blown-away by one of the most beautiful pieces of music i bought years ago but only heard about twice back then & that was 4 or 5 turntable (+ other parts) upgrades ago. But playing that Bizet's Carmen Suite blew me away with the astonishing extra life, clarity, detail, ambience etc etc etc that my new mono cartridge brought to it. Great Video. P.S. i started off liking Zep, Purple, Steely Dan, & all the other late 60's to late 70's "midnight toker's" music (somebody said it was) some like d.purple & Uriah Heap, i cannot play any more) i didn't understand when a friend once said "I liked those really good weeds like Sensi & all but the hash that came out of India & Pakistan (that i haven't seen since the late 70's or very early 80's) was 100% unbeatable to this day" ...whatever that means

Can I chip in with a question? There are many well-regarded CD era cycles using Beethoven's contentious speeds. I am deeply fond of Gardiner's cycle on DG, issued on the early music sub-label Archiv. A robust and biting cycle. Would it do well if it were available on vinyl? AFAIK, I only see vinyl for Norrington's cycle and perhaps part of Hogwood's cycle. There is vinyl for the first three symphonies in Bruggen's cycle.

Thanks, that was so informative. It's such a pity so few vinyl lovers appear to be interested in classical music-or maybe they are just not interested in posting on KZitem. Those RD boxes are phenomenal value. Classical music with it's wide dynamics lends itself perfectly to vinyl, though it needs to be mint or near mint in condition so the quiet bits are not affected by too many pops and clicks. Just my personal opinion but I don't think CD' s did any favours for classical music lovers in terms of sound quality.

Frans Bruggen and the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century live Beethoven are available on sacd/DSD on period instruments with period performance techniques...... regarding vibrato, ornaments, intonation etc. The Jarvi is indebted to forerunners such as Bruggen. Von K. later recorded a second cycle of Beethoven's symphonies for Deutsche Grammophon. As for Bernstein, he's enthusiasticly sloppy. By the way, Beethoven's name translates as: beet farmer.

Minimal miking isn't necessarily synonimous with the best stereophonic reproduction. Since the advent of stereo technology, think the golden early days of Decca and Phase four, there have more and more multimicrophone recordings and this has proven to be the best way to ensure the most 'solid' (stereo) soundstage for classical music.

I'm leaving my mark on the world for future generations to see on a KZitem comment , the year 2020 was when it all went downhill , God is great , Jesus saves , live your life , smile, love and have fun , life is short and what society tells you is important , really isn't , love is all that really matters , we all make mistakes , forgive to be forgiven , let your love light shine , and listen to lots of records 😁

Mark - This is an eye opening video - I went to one of the local thrift stores the day after watching this and they were having a Spring Sale on all there books, cds & vinyl albums. I picked up the Readers Digest Beethoven Set, a London Haydn Piano Sonatas Box Set and EMI Karajan Beethoven 9th Box Set - all three for six bucks and they are in VG to Mint Condition. What a deal! That’s why you’re the man !

I totally agree with the Beethoven recommendations. In the CD era the venue of Bruno Walter's Beethoven cycle was revealed as being recorded at Hollywood's Legion Hall, cited as "American Legion Hall'. I would also highly recommend the superb budget André Cluytens Beethoven cycle with the Berlin Philharmonic. It's contemporaneous to the Walter cycle and was produced by Walter Legge of EMI fame.

I love your.Videos, and I like watching you. I’m your age and relate too everything you talk about, including the heartbreak of losing John Lennon. My dad listened to classical and Dixieland jazz. My mom listened to Sinatra swing, Hern Alpert and Jackie Gleason..Bobby Hackett. When I was in 6th grade they sent ,e too young peoples concerts...during school...double prizes! I then took Music Appreciation in high school and college. been collecting records and concentrate on jazz, classical and instrumental. I’m a jazz guitarist, BTW. You do a good imitation of ALL The Beatles, BTW. I would love to talk via email. I have an interesting background a Masters in Mechanical Engineering and a MFA from RISD, so I look at the world both technically and artistically. Like I said, I’ve been a guitarist for the last 15. I love talking about The Beatles, Blues Note, Prestige and Verve, Living Stereo and Living Presence records, and other things like Exotica and DIXIELAND,, and male and female vocals. I’ll be looking at my Beethoven collection to see what pressings I have. Shoot me a message at eslick001@msn.com. Thanks Micheal.

Michael,It's pronounced 'Lie-bowitz' not 'Lee-bowitz'. Yes, great conductor. Sadly underrated and under recorded. He was a full fledged opera conductor too (many don't know). Don't miss his recording of 'A Portrait of Manon' with Anna Moffo and Giuseppi Di Stefano

Hi Michael. I really enjoyed this video. Which Bernstein recording do you think sounds better? Normally I would go for recordings as close to the initial pressing as possible. But I am intrigued by the half master recording of the reissue. Can you do a similar video on Mahler symphony box sets?

Agreed! I like pure classical, early music predating what people generally call classical, such as Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, as well as contemporary classical-style works such as neo-classical. I for one like Yngwie Malmsteen and have an appreciation for Mark Wood of Trans-Siberian Orchestra. There's also a joke on the internet that classical is metal before electricity, and in a sense, that is true in my opinion.

I grew up with a set of RD's "Mood Music For Listening And Relaxation". I always thought they were some of the best-sounding records I'd heard. The music was well arranged and expertly played. I now have two sets, one in great shape with all the paperwork about various RD boxes. My choice of Beethoven-in-a-box is Szell / Cleveland SO, which I first heard when a friend wanted it taped on cassettes from his records. While I was at it, I made open-reel copies for myself. Years later I bought it on CDs.
