Angle introduced the Edgewise Appliance in 1925 which was the base of the modern orthodontic appliances. Holdaway in 1952 added tip and Jarabak in 1960 added torque. Later, Andrews in 1970 introduced the Straight-Wire ™ Appliance based on his six keys of occlusion. Andrews appliance had many variations which led Roth to introduce one prescription that works for all which was widely accepted because of its convenience. McLaughlin, Bennett and Trevisi in 1997 introduced the MBT™ Appliance System for sliding mechanics with light forces to overcome previous shortcomings. It also presented three different torque levels for canine brackets and the versatility of bracket bonding made the basically one prescription meet different clinical needs. More recently, Damon introduced a wide variety of brackets with three torque levels for the anterior teeth.
Today, the most popular prescriptions are Roth and MBT. While most clinicians use either or both prescriptions in their practice rarely is the choice of prescription based on the clinical case. However, there are indications for each prescription with MBT system best suited for Class II malocclusion and Roth system best suited for Class III malocclusion. Moreover, using a combination of both systems together with the use of premolar tubes, self-ligating brackets, eyelets and more can provide the clinician with a hybrid system that is tailored to each specific clinical case.
