Thanks! I was thinking about the Casio CDP-S350 or 360, because it seems one of the best bang for the buck Casio, but then I found the Casio PX-S1100. The PX-s3100 is too expensove for me, and I think I wouldn't use the majority pf its sounds and I don't need arranger function, so I thought maybe the PX-S1100 would be a better choice (for me at leqst), because all I really want is a nice fully weighted action with a nice piano sound. I think tje CDP piano sound is pretty nice too especially for its price, but I like the sound of the PX-s1100 waaay better. I really like somewhat darker piano sounds (I mean for example Yamaha or Roland sounds tend to be a little too bright to my taste, and I think the Caaio PX-S1100 has a nice darker (and more realistic) sound IMHO, which I really like. I guess I better just save up for the PX-S1100. (PS. Sorry, I just noticed this when I finished typing. This comment got a little longer then it should/could've been :))

Interesting comparison. I agree with the conclusion. Montage and Fantom are Workstations, they can't fight with the enormous Keyscape Piano sound bank ( 200Gb I think). And Nord sound is also more natural. By the way, I love the pieces and the pianist. What is his name ? Dan Who ? What are the pieces from ? Especially the first one (played on the Roland and the Casio) , with Bb - Bb/D - Fsus/C - Eb/G ... So nice. At 9:35 I think I recognize Nimrod by Edward Elgar. Again who is the player and were can I ear more of him ? Sorry Jack, I like You too of course

I did a blind listen and took some quick notes. There was a noticeable volume difference on the Nord (seemed quieter), and the Roland had a strange panning issue... seemed off to the R channel more than it should have been? From my blind listen, I liked Keyscape the most, and Nord was close second but the quietness was hard for me to look past for some reason. I am extremely picky and there is still a long way to go before a digital piano reach the moon in order to sound acoustic, but the nord has a great sound and fits my workflow even though i have to tweak it at times. Their grand samples are still lacking, but their Upright samples really has something real in them.

@@TheSitch but what is creating the sound? is it hooked up to external speakers?
@trainliker100
3 жыл бұрын
I remember back when I was an electronics technician and then an engineer that regular folks assumed I could tell them the best "Hi Fi" and then "Stereo" equipment to get. Especially speakers. People would listen to speakers in the listening room of one store. And then drive across town and listen to some in another store. It is VERY hard to compare unless they are side by side, such as these pianos. That also suggests that if the piano test had them located in different places with drive time to get there, it might be harder to judge. The other thing I suggested was they buy the cheapest speakers they liked the sound of. Some people like big boomy bass lousy frequency response speakers. Tastes vary with pianos, too. Of course, a professional pianist (and my mother was a professional concert pianist) is going to have a better ear for such things. She didn't live long enoughto see the state of the art that exists today, but was adamant they "would never equal a real piano". Of course, you should never say never, or always. And here we sit with most of us with crummy little speakers that came with out Dell setup or whatever which probably doesn't translate the real sound all that well.
@derbar7051

I can attest to your mother that a real accoustic will never be beaten against electronic keyboard. Some elements of music will never fade despite the test of time -- I'm a professional pianist.
@trainliker100
11 ай бұрын
@@derbar7051 Maybe. But I've been involved in "high tech" for years and one thing I have always avoided saying is "never." We might not only get to the point where in a "blind taste test" so to speak, even experts might not be able to tell the difference. If I create a waveform identical to that of a certain piano and have a sophisticated enough speaker system to "handle DC to Daylight", I suspect it is only a matter of time. And there can also be choices to select piano brands, model, period of manufacturer. voicing desired, and so forth. I know that two consecutive pianos off the line won't even sound exactly the same, but whatever the variables are, they can probably be identified and simulated.
@derbar7051

@@trainliker100 I don't disagree with you based on the science behind your logic but I do think that science cannot replicate human nature. The sense of touch and the sound world that a electric keyboard pales in comparison compared to accoustic (good that is) pianos. Maybe I am wrong and that you're right in that there will be no distinction between both mediums, but I am sceptical.

As an owner of the Nord, the soft touch membrane buttons are terrible for accidental activation. Travel for switching is millimetres. Why a piano needs a “panel lock” should’ve been a warning that the design is flawed, and needed a rethink. It’s impossible for gigging unless you’re only using one sound, or there’s plenty of time between tunes to release the lock and change tone. Be mindful too, that Nord only have one distributor in UK, which also “supply” warranty repairs, which means a time consuming and costly repair, if they accept to do it. My advice is buy a Kawai MP7 (same action as the Nord) and midi external piano...and is over a Nordgrand cheaper

For pianos alone, I think that was spot on really. I do personally like the roland V-Pianos sounds ... but once tuned to the individual players touch (the stock patches arnt great). not really sure why you chose the Fantom though - as the RD2000 has the same keybed and same sound engine, and is more a pure piano (OK it has lots of other stuff too - BUT its not a VA synth, sequencer etc that the Fantom is). While the outcome would be the same - the price difference between the Fantom and RD DOES make a difference - as does the price of the Nord V the RD (quite a bit) - and indeed the soundscape version. Have to say the Grand stage is the only Nord piano Id play - its the only one with a decent keybed, and it misses out on a lot other stage pianos can do (the RD as mentioned, Yamahas dedicated pianos etc) - but as JUST a piano - its probably the top choice right now (bar POSSIBLY a Kawai MP7/11)

As they are in a parallel not competing universe, I feel I can point here to the YT channel of Merriam Music where pianist Stu Harrison reviews pianos. I'd say more as a musician than as a salesman. He did in-depth reviews of virtual instruments about half a year ago, comparing Keyscape to others. I think that the Kawai MP11SE now has the best action of the 88-key boards that look like a stage piano (but may be too heavy). Maybe Kawai should update their VPC-1 with these same keys and it facilitating the MP11SE's 3-pedal unit (with optical innards, instead of common potentiometers). I feel, though, they should also do a version of the VPC-1 with a real real grand piano action in it, like they put into one of their Novus machines. No, that will not become light enough for a single person transport to gigs either.

RD2000 is not identical with Fantom. RD would score better than Fantom but in this comparison, the winner somehow would have been the same, i.e. Nord...

If u gonna compare pianos then u should get keyboards that specialises in piano sounds.Its unfair to put a stage piano and piano vst up against a workstation keyboard. It would be better if you had all four as Stage/Digital pianos to have a better comparison regarding both acoustic piano sounds as well as feel.

I believe that comparing the acoustic and electric pianos with some of the models of the other companies (Korg sv2- Nord electro- Montage etc.) could be interesting!!! Anyway, great video, Cheers from Argentina!

Tried them all and can understand all the comments very well. Sold my Fantom X8 and bought a Nord Grand. It‘s the best sounding and the most dynamic digital piano I ever had. The key action is perfect for Jazz and Rock ballads. However fast notes are sometimes hard to play. Sometimes played notes seem to be swallowed.

There's a "lock buttons"-button on the Nord Grand that you have to hold for some seconds, after which no buttons can be triggered. So accidentally changing sound is not much of a problem.

I really dig the product demos that you do. However, I need to piss some vinegar and say that the playing is rather límited to cocktail/ ballad piano that is heavy on the pedal. Very beautiful without a doubt, but personally I would be more interested in hearing some ragtime and boogie without so much pedal, as well as some ckassical tunes.

Maybe do a shootout between stage pianos like the Yamaha CP88, Korg SV2, Nord Piano 4, etc. Also, the Roland Fantom 8 can get much better piano sounds if you mess around with it a bit. I'm not sure if you had the Super Natural piano tones downloaded on there or not, but they are much better than what the Fantom 8 comes with out of the box.

I find it interesting that he loved the Casio so much. I thought the tone was rather squashed - no highs at all. And surprised he didn't care for the Yamaha, since their piano samples have typically been the best in the industry for decades.

You got a couple of things wrong there. First, What you call the Casio's sound is not generated from the casio, but from a laptop and a VST. It's called keyscape and compared to Yamaha's piano sounds this is well ahead of them, just like every good VST. I believe that among all Digital pianos Nord is the only one which can take on a computer-based piano software. A good ear is what it takes to understand that quite shamefully most of the devices made to simulate a piano, be them from Yamaha, Roland, Kawai and so forth do not reproduce the quality that external softwares contain. So I think these brands, (although excellent), are far away from being leaders in Piano tone reproduction. That's how I see it at least. For sure everyone has its own preferences. :) All the best!
@rsvmedia3132

@@stenaldomehilli8809 Have to disagree with you there. While Keyscape and Nord is in it's own league, in a live setting I would take the Yamaha over Keyscape for 90% of what I play. All of these stuff that makes it sound like a "real piano" is practically useless in a live setting, and you often see pros turn them off to get them as clean as possible. Also, Keyscape standard grand is noisy as heck and requires quite a lot of processing power, fast disks and lots of RAM to run smooth. I think the Nord is a good compromise, and has great keys, had they not put it in their form factor with operating system and workflow sent from hell. Yamaha Montage is by far the best engine I've tested (haven't tried the Fantom yet) in terms of patch creation. The Fantom piano sounded dull and unresponsive. At least it wasn't a Casio (whoch is the definition of lifeless piano sound)
@stenaldomehilli8809

@@rsvmedia3132 Well, we don't disagree that much I'd say, 😊 In fact I totally understand that a less complex piano sound -with less harmonics and pedal noise like Nord's white grand or with no ambients like Keyscape- would do a better job in most live situations. In my previous comment I was referring to the authenticity which you'd find pretty much in most of the Nord Samples and VSTs, and not as much in top products from Yamaha and Roland. For example, the samples that these brands offer with their top of the line home digital pianos are, (or so I guess), the same samples they have on their most powerful stage pianos. So it's not that they're following your healthy logic, they're just respecting the status-quo. most probably I'm a far less experienced musician than you, but if I have to buy a more professional piano to what I currently have (A Roland FP-30), I'm sure I'd suffer. I don't like Roland's modeled pianos, I can easily hear that what a CP 88 or a Kawai MP-11 SE samples is far from Spitfire and spectrasonics and if I have to record an arrangement, I won't be using my internal piano sounds. This is like buying a playstation 4 and playing games on your PC! 🤣 Thank you for this conversation and a marry Christmas in advance!

I watched the video by only listening to the sound. Here’s my notes. I missed the Nord with Montage in the later part of Nord because I didn’t realize he moved his hands up for the Montage. 1. Sounds very good. Wooden flavor. I like this one. Pretty wooden. (8) “Not best sound, not best action” - fantom 88 2. A little bit too much ambience. too creamy. I don’t like this one. (5) “Not best action” “sound nice & rich”. “Plastic & cheap” “playable”. - Keyscape 3. Not too many detail. Maybe a KORG or Casio? Feel the sound is empty inside. (7)“Worst action” - MONTAGE. 4. Most likely a Nord. Wooden, delay reasonable, dynamic. Thick sound. i like this one. (9)“Pedal noise high””fill the room with piano”. Touched the gospel pad. Keep doing. Back to the initial one. Sounds quite nice. Not too bad. Ok. Ambience is proper. Played twice after back to the patch. “Can cut through”. (Right upper).”not bad”. - Nora Grand 5. Last one - moved a bit - maybe Roland? Woody. Not bad. 63715 52342 - Fantom 88 6. “I move on to this” - too much decay. Maybe a software one. “Feel a real piano”. - KeyScape
