eric here!! thanks for tuning in - this week's episode is a bit different and has a lot of honest existential angst on the biggest question in life - what do we even *want* to do? hope you enjoy it - and hopefully you don't notice me progressively sliding down the couch until i was basically horizontal 😅

As someone who owned and operated my own business (pre-covid), now working in tech, and now yearning to go independent again, this was such a refreshing and honest conversation. I'm so curious what Chloe's actual goals are. She seems really pressured to scale, but how much is enough? Full time creator seems like the supplement to the actual business we want to build. Best of luck everyone!

I'm a little flabbergasted by the level of networking and how it's possible to do so. When Chloe says that she is in DM's with a VP of product at a big company, and then later says having dinner with the founder of Patreon I was taken aback. Is this just because Silicon Valley is much smaller than people think? I can't even start conversational DM's with random people I'd like to befriend. I just kind of assume that people only want to talk to people they know and approve of in DM's since I rarely use them or have never gotten a real response back.

I left the corporate world in May, feeling scared because it was all I knew. Now, I’ve realized how good life can be outside of it, free from unnecessary drama and ruthless behavior! For now, I can’t see myself going back to corporate life. What’s beautiful about doing your own thing is the ability to control your time and effort, and to choose who and what you spend your energy on. I also agree with Eric’s advice!

Hearing your stories often makes me feel like we're living parallel lives. I too was laid off from a huge tech company in January of this year and decided to pursue creating content for the first time (after putting it off for years). What can seem like such a dream from the outside, looks mighty different on the inside. I Totally feel what Eric said about being confronted with all of your own weaknesses. There's nothing like putting your dreams to the test for you to realize the grass is not ALWAYS greener on the other side. The good thing is that that realization is a humbling reminder that everything has its own challenges and what appears to be glamorized on the outside, has a whole backstage of hard work, long hours and mental anguish. All this to say, let's just all do our best while taking care of our mental health and bodies. Love listening to you guys every week. Y'all are real ones. ❤

As someone who's juggling tech + content creation and around the same age, it's definitely nice not feeling the stress relying on content for income, and even have the freedom to fund content creation if needed. Really reminds me that sometimes when you turn a hobby into a job, it becomes work.. but also when choosing between several great paths in life, sometimes the grass is brown everywhere, and it's only green where you water it! Also +1 to hiring help, even if it's just to offload your most disliked tasks!

Very eye opening and insightful conversation on balancing a creative and corporate lifestyle! 👀 I've had to put my creative endeavours on the back burner as I ploughed through a degree and adjusted to corporate work. It was a bit comforting hearing about the shared struggles of those trying to juggle both, as growing up I felt it was very one or the other. I'm in my quarter life crisis zone figuring out whether I can or want to ease back into it. Diving into the new era of hybrid creative! 🖌🖥 Also totally feel when Chloe mentions having a target on her back; having an online presence while also being high visibility does have its downsides, especially if your content is a bit more personable. I'm always trying to seperate the personal and digital, although it's a constant struggle. 😵💫

I feel a lot of resonance with this episode although I have become more digitally recluse in the last 5 years to focus on IRL priorities. I'm currently at an inflection point of my life where I am mentally disengaged about corporate product design conversations; instead, I am deeply invested about helping smaller businesses like PoC communities and my spicy content creator friends be even more accomplished by extending my tech and design skills to their business needs. I just feel undecided as to how I want to commit to these ventures, but content creation seems like a great way to expose different ways of working and collaborating.

I agree with Eric’s advice to Chlo. Scaling down will help give her the mental space to make a long term decision. When we’re on the go and spinning wheels with no clear destination it can lead to major burnout and hatred towards something that was meant to be fun. I think content creation is phenomenal but like everything in life it needs to be done in moderation (even when it’s your full time job) because people feed off the energy of what you produce. I know Chloe wants to serve her community but that starts from her serving herself. We can see when she’s exhausted and we don’t want that for her. She wouldn’t advise us to work to the point of exhaustion so I hope she can extend herself the same grace. Content creations has to make her heart happy and come from a place of rest and peace (not 60 hours of scripting 😭).I respect the quality of work she creates but I care about her as a human being first. So I like what Eric said, scale back and create what you can from a place of deep rest. ❤️

I hope my comment didn’t come across as judgement. I was also laid off at Google last year and I went on a similar journey as Chloe. Did multiple interviews but realized I wanted to explore my content creation abilities further. I even created a course for Coursera just to find my fit. However similar to her I’m also not sure if I can go back to a full corporate job but I don’t think I can keep up with the algorithm demands of content creation. So I’m just consulting and creating content for now. All this to say, none of us truly have the answers 😂😅🙈

I love content creation but I think I love it because it's not the only thing I do. It is my side hustle. I need a lot of variety and am constantly doing something, learning a new skill, trying new things and I like that it's a passion project and given I do reviews, it keeps me doing it because I love it and not pushing product, but perhaps if I was a bigger content creator and had a team and more access to cool things it would be different. 100% having an issue with how I work VS how my boss works and how we tackle it and use our strengths; it's a problem As for body changing when you're 30, yes in some ways however, I can't relate as I am the most fit I've ever been in my life because I started doing way more physical activities in my late 20s onwards. But I've always been insanely energetic so, perhaps the secret to youth is ADHD lol

Hey Friends! So several things to chime in. - I felt the change in my body last year (so 32-33). Please say no to more things in order to take care of your body. Exercise and eat well! - I really felt the martial art manga thingy 🤣 every time I see an anime that is sporty I want to do it. Currently sticking to Karate (almost green belt) - the same thing that Chloe says is happening to me: someone who is giving me feedback that doesn’t relate to me and that is not accurate. My solution is: this is my last month in my company and I’m stating in a Start up with friend 🎉 the only designer. And it gives me time to do my own thing/business - I do see myself as being a good manager and leader having been in the position I am today, and I want to try it put: have my own app and company, having people in charge. I really hope with this change I can get there. Hopefully starting KZitem soon! Lot’s of new things happening in my life! Can relate with both of you and thank you so much for the free advice! ❤ love the pod
