Just for the average suburbanite. Real Bee Keepers aren't using these things. Regular traditional bee boxes are $200.00 bucks for the whole set up. These things are $750.00 +.

I've had 'rent-a-hive' here in Auckland before, and as our winter is very mild we've easily grown a five to five and down to two for 'wintering'. Looking to get into beekeeping again with a flow hive. Is it a risk or a certainty the queen might die if you keep the queen excluder in place over "winter"? Random other question - do you get tutin often in Australia? How do you handle it?

When I setup my flow hives, should I set the flow hives with the level set to harvest the honey or that’s something done later on the process when the hives are ready to harvest? i recently saw a video where the flow frames looked really dirty after a few years of use, what is the best way to clean them?
@FlowHive
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Billy, We have found that the Flow Frame comb itself should not need cleaning if it stays within the hive as the bees do a great job of keeping it clean. If you remove the Flow Frames from the hive for storage, they may need cleaning as they can attract debris depending on your storage method. You can do this by using hot water (just hot enough to melt wax - recommended up to 70°C), a hot water hose tends to work well. Set the Flow comb to ‘cell open’ position, this allows the water to flow quite easily through all parts of the frame. It is likely that most of the wax and propolis will remain on the frame, which should not be an issue as the bees will recycle this - the main purpose is to ensure that the frame is clean enough to be re-added to the hive. We have designed the honey trough at the bottom of the frame so that any remaining honey can drip back into the hive for the bees to use. If the leak back point remains clear this works well, however, if the bees seal it, sometimes you end up with a little honey in the trough at the bottom which may need cleaning out prior to your next harvest. This can be easily done by unblocking the leak back point with the tongue of your Flow tube or a small implement. - Sam

What oil do you recommend for oiling your hive?
@FlowHive
2 жыл бұрын
Hey Tony, Thanks for your question. Each climate is different, so we recommend consulting your local hardware/paint specialist to know which one's best for where you are. For example here in Aus, in some drier climates people have success with Tung oil, however here in the more humid northern NSW we find it attracts mildew and have better results with an anti-fungal linseed oil. Let your hardware specialist know it's for a beehive when you enquire so you get something low-toxic :) You won't need to paint the inside, just the outside areas of the hive. And even with cedar hives we recommend actually painting the roof's outside with an exterior house paint of some kind as it is most exposed to the weather. I hope this helps. - Danika
