Thank you, Sir! I spent the whole week trying to figure out what was wrong with my green screen setup, used different light sources, purchased more lights, more lights, and the end of the day came across this video. My Panasonic HC-V750 is simply not designed to work with a green screen. I'm your long time subscriber, but for one or another reason I missed this video. Just ordered an iPhone 8 (it's going to be my first experience in using Apple products), so I truly hope, it will fully satisfy my needs.

I have the AX100, and will say that it is a great little camera. I also purchased a Panasonic DVX200, which is the camcorder version of the GH5, and is the camera I use more often. BTW, just found your channel today when looking for greenscreen tips, and I'm impressed with what I've seen so far.

@@StevenWasher That's a fair analogy. It's definitely a bigger camera. I've actually considered getting a GH5 or the newer S1 to get better videos when traveling. So far, I've just stuck with the AX100 because it's good enough 90% of the time.

Funny experiment: I used the same backdrop, same lighting to do a test with my Canon C200 vs an old & cheap Sony MC 2500. The key from the Sony was much cleaner! Do you know the reason for that Steven? Is the much lauded Canon color science which makes skin tones so agreeable a drawback when it comes to chroma keying?
@StevenWasher
3 жыл бұрын
That is interesting. You may be running into a debayering issue with the Canon. Also, certain codecs are much more compressed, leaving you fewer pixels with which to pull a key. The 200 is one of Canon's more highly compressed cinema cameras. But it's always fun to experiment. Half the time I'm in mad scientist mode myself. :)
@videostream_team
3 жыл бұрын
@@StevenWasher At first, I thought it was a matter of compression as well. Then I recorded 10-bit raw on the C200. Still, the old Sony's footage is keying (much) better. Canon's really not looking too hot in this comparison.
@StevenWasher
3 жыл бұрын
@@videostream_team From a pure physics standpoint and from the evidence I've seen in the rest of this industry, there is no comparison between 10 or 12 bit RAW files and a 4:2:0 file shot in a lossy codec. I would re-check my premises and setup.
@videostream_team
3 жыл бұрын
@@StevenWasher Thanks for sharing that - I didn't know. Guess I'll be renting Sony gear for the ccasional green screen then. Pity - in every other aspect, I'm quite happy with the C200.
@StevenWasher
3 жыл бұрын
@@videostream_team Check your image from the Canon in the red channel. If there's a ring around the subject then yes, there's a problem with the codec. If not, the problem is in your setup. There's no way on earth an old Sony with a lossy codec is going to beat 12-bit RAW, no matter the color science. I've shot a ton of green screen footage with Canons and it was fine. This has to be operator error. And if you don't investigate this situation thoroughly, you're throwing away good jobs in the future!

Please don't do that. The resolution is horrible and your green screen will suffer a nervous breakdown. You too, maybe. Get a boring old indoor camera instead (not a webcam).

Since the Sony uses a 4:2:0 (0!) color space, as far as I can determine, how do you keep from getting jagged edges on your chroma-keyed subjects?
@StevenWasher

It's kind of amazing isn't it? But when you light it properly, you can finesse it rather easily. I have about 100 videos on my channel that were shot with that Sony. So you can check it out for yourself.

Right now the problem is the way consumer-grade cameras compress the image. But it's not all bad news. The keyers are pretty good if you light carefully. That's why I make such a big deal out of that. So rather than look at price, look at features. An HD camera that compresses the image less than a 4K camera is going to be a better buy. Learn a little about video compression schemes and make your choice based on the camera that gives you the least-compressed image possible. I'll make a video about this soon. :)
