You can't even compare the two.... Brian and his father built the red special from scratch. EVH purchased pre-made parts and modded it to his liking. Brian built a guitar that can be replicated but nobody will ever have Brian's actual guitar the way it was actually made, the closest you'll ever get to building Brian's guitar the way he did is having some great Luther or woodworking skills and knowledge of how to make it all come togetherm EVH.... you can purchase the parts and build an almost exact replica of his guitar with little to no knowledge and painting it. Call me whatever you want, but my brother and I had this conversation the other day and Brian May will always hold the crown for the most unique, custom, and one of a kind guitars in the world
@MASAo7

EXACTLY! The frankenstrat was made by Fender, Charvel, Kramer and Gibson. Those parts were then simply put together by Eddie. EVH was a great guitar player but he did not make his guitar any more than I made the cupboard which I bought from Ikea the other day and chose to switch out the handles for metal ones because I didn't like the plastic ones it came with. I can't think of any other famous guitarist who built their own guitar from scratch AND then went on to use it in their career as their main guitar. Maybe Bo Diddley?

The red special easily. I’m a die hard fan of both Queen and Van Halen but Brian May’s red special is literally like none other. There will probably never be a guitar crafted by hand tools like this again due to all the innovation we’ve had. EVH did make a unique instrument, especially for the late 70’s but at the end of the day it is still identified as a Strat. May be a unique one, with a unique paint job but it is still a highly modified strat. The red special is just that. The red special.

The Red Special. I love Van Halen but May built it with his Father basically out of scratch. The body was an old table, the fretboard was an old fireplace, the markers are buttons from his mother's sewing kit, the tremolo system came form a motorcycle, you could go on and on. Not to mention May used that same guitar since the beginning of Queen till this very day. The Frankenstrat was a pre built guitar that was heavily modified, and EVH used several throughout his career.

I think in terms of recognizability it's the Franketstrat, but if we're talking about how influential, and innovative the guitar is. Its Red, hands down. Brian and his father built the guitar themselves, and its a bloody genius design. From the nearly frictionless tremolo system, to the versatility you can achieve because of the individual pickup, and phase switches. The Red Special holds an incredibly important spot in the hall of fame of guitars for a reason, I would also argue that it is probably the most valuable guitar in the world.

I will not comment on the influence or "reach" of each artist, as both are highly respected guitarists. I will limit myself to the question that has been posed. Edward's guitar was a "partscaster", comprised of various new and used components 'slapped together', yet, set-up very nicely, for optimum performance. Brian May's Red Special, on the other hand was completely handmade artisan instrument made with repurposed wood from a centuries old fireplace mantle, a table top and a chopping block. Aparently, they even handwound the original pick-ups (which Mr. May has admitted on various occasions "weren't half bad"). The Red Special is a well-made, nicely finished "proper" instrument... it gets my vote.

May's guitar was built by he and his father, and the wood was reclaimed from an 800 year old fireplace mantle. At least that's what I've read over the years... I have NEVER before heard so many unique tones from the same guitar, although I know it's a combination of guitar and amp, probably AC 30's and God knows what else... Even the pick-ups are unusual, at in Rock, and then of course there's the May himself, and his 'touch'... 🎩🐊⚜️🐊🎩
@imweakfordeaky

- 100 year old fireplace (not 800), wormholes meticulously filled in with matchsticks - yes, AC30s are what Brian uses… but also contributing to Brian’s unique tone in the studio is the humble, also-homemade Deacy Amp built by bassist John Deacon. Originally meant as a little practice amp for Deacon himself, Brian discovered that using it in conjunction with his Red Special allowed him to mimic orchestral instruments. Once that discovery was made, Deacon happily turned it over to Brian’s use…and Brian still owns it to this day.
