A great video and intro. I went from no hat to a baseball cap to eventually about 5 years ago a Panama hat in the summer (it gets hot here in Shanghai in the summer). I think it was either a trilby or short brimmed Fedora. I’m not sure where one ends and the other begins. But at first I was nervous wearing it. It seems quite silly now. It only takes a few wears to start to feel comfortable with a good hat, and it eventually becomes part of you and you don’t even think about not wearing it. I bought my first felt fedora last winter, my first non Panama fedora and I just got a brand new super lightweight Panama from Locke & Co. Both times I still felt a bit uncomfortable at first putting on a new style of hat that I hadn’t worn before but are now no more strange than me wearing a pair of shoes. My wife really didn’t like the felt fedora at first but now she loves it. In fact she ‘borrowed’ it a few times - and complained I bought it a size too big!. So if you are thinking about trying one of the hats Sonya mentioned then go for it but don’t reject it just because you are a little uneasy with it at first. give it at least 3 or 4 wears. You will get comfortable with it and soon regret that you waited so long.

A big problem that hinders people from wearing hats is the fact that the proportions of commonly available hats often do not suit the features of the wearer's face. A lot of people try on a hat that doesn't suit then, look in the mirror, and the never try wearing a hat again. For example, a taller crown suits a taller person, and shorter crown a shorter person, a wider brin suits a broader person, and narrower brin a narrower person. That is simple stuff. More subtely, a hat with a crown that is very straight sided will suit a squarer face, a hat that tapers from the base of the crown to the top suits a face that tapers towards the bottom and so on. A nuance topic that could be discussed indefinitely but could be summed up as: look in a mirror.

Flat caps + straw fedoras for me. It was born out of necessity since I started to shave my hair. Baseball caps felt increasingly more juvenile. Initially, wearing any type of hat was a step outside of my comfort zone but I can actually pull off the Peaky Blinder type look. It was just a matter of finding the right shape. I love Panama hats too but in most everyday situations it feels a bit "too much" partly because the rest of the outfit must match. It works best when there's an air of nonchalance like on a summer holiday.

I have a grey Fedora and two Stetson Trilby hats. One is a grey herringbone tweed and the other is camelhair color. The Trilby is very common in the non-cowboy hats that Stetson made and still makes. However, Stetson calls them Fedoras. All three hats are vintage. I also have a straw Trilby for summer. I have so many because they are so practical and it looks good on me. Fedora's work on me too. I've alway wanted a bowler and a boater, but the stuff off the rack doesn't fit my head. I think I need bespoke. I like the Panama. Probably, there is one in my future. The one hat you left out is the flat cap. Maybe you consider it to proletariat? I have a few, and I think the are just the thing with a tweed suit or jacket and a Burberry trench coat. Lots of people across the channel from you agree!

I’m 21 years old here in the American South, and I wear many different styles of hats ranging in formality from newsboy caps all the way to top hats. I mainly wear fedoras (or pajamas in the summer) and homburgs while occasionally switching to a bowler or newsboy cap. I find that they just complete my outfits in a very elegant and sophisticated way. My favorite hat if I just had to choose one would be my top hat from Christy’s of London. I am a musician, and during performances I’ve actually worn white tie with the top hat. It is very distinguished and makes me feel ten feet tall. I truly enjoy wearing it when I can and enjoy wearing all of my hats. Not many men these days, especially young men in my age group, wear them, but that is also what I love so much about it. Hats will forever be a timeless wardrobe essential in my wardrobe.

I would like to address the concept of fedoras and trilbies being different types of hat. Avoiding some much older historical complications (e.g. if you go really far back, the term fedora used much more broadly for any soft, felt hat - including homburgs), the term fedora (for most of its historical use) has applied to anything that people would recognise as a fedora or trilby (i.e. any soft hat with a snap brim) in American English. Conversely, the term trilby was used in British English for the same. The term trilby travelled to the US with British made hats that had relatively narrow brims (marketed as hats to wear to the races). The term fedora wasn't really heard in the UK until it was popularised by phenomena like Indiana Jones. It is from this history that we get the modern perception that fedoras and trilbies are different types of hat, when truly they are the same, with some people being more likely to apply one term or another based on brim width. Does the distinction or lack of distinction really matter? Perhaps not, but people will find that they are suited to hats with different proportions, and arbitrarily dividing soft, snap brim hats into two categories helps to limit that, as "fedoras" tend to be produced with not only wider brims, but also straighter crowns, whilst "trilbies" tend to be produced with narrower brims and more tapered crowns. But people really need more variety than that to find hats that suit their face and body - I, for example, favour wider, flatter brims (at least 7cm), but also more tapered crowns (as an enthusiast of open-crown hats and doing my own bashing, I can deal with the tapering issue myself). I would also argue that the pork pie hat is really just another variety of fedora/trilby, in that it is another soft hat with a snap brim, just specifically with a pork pie crown (which other hats can also have - e.g. a Homburg could have a pork pie crown).

Thanks for all this info. I never used to wear a hat but now I am middle-aged and the hair is thinning a bit on the top. I finally have the confidence to wear more gentlemanly hats. Lots of good comments when wearing the right hat. Many can be worn very casually to stave off sun & weather elements. I find these very versatile and so I do not bother adding extra accessories (hat are enough statement on their own). Best to visit a specialized hat shop to get proper quality. A a super cheap hat makes a guy look cheap so stick to Quality. Take some risks to try various styles in store which will look the best according to your personal looks (for there are way too many variables to learn this via KZitem). Note, you can actually use a hat style to help balance out overall personal features and look best to empathize with your face. Important Note, people who look good in hats have simply tried on enough shapes & styles to figure out what really works for them.

I have tried on a few panama hats and have yet to be 100% excited by what I see in the mirror. Either it's the fact that a big part of my identity is my hair so I am not used to it or what I really think it is - is not choosing the perfect hat for my face. And perhaps the feeling would completely change if I were to try some hats on while wearing my favorite suit? Anyway - food for thought. I will kep exploring because I LOVE the look. Thanks!

I love wearing hats. The first one I picked up was my late grandpa's flat cap. I loved wearing it, and noticed it's much better at its job than say an umbrella or sunglasses (both of which I've often misplaced or lost). So usually now when people ask me why I wear a hat, I say "Hats are awesome. When it's raining a hat makes your head dry and when it's sunny it gives you shade." I now own two fedoras (one dark brown, one melange anthtracite gray) of different weights; I own several flat caps, a few I made by myself; two Russian ushankas for winter time; a straw hat and a stetson (the latter I find very useful when it's wet and I have stuff around the property to do as it's quite heavy duty and it has a big brim); I also just recently ordered a bowler hat and this summer I intend to buy a good quality panama hat so as to use it when the straw hat I have is too informal. As mentioned I love hats because when it's rain they keep my head dry and when it's sunny they give shade superior to that of sunglasses. But since I'm shorter than average, a hat also gives me a confidence boost since it draws the eye up and makes me seem taller than I am. Especially the fedoras and my dark brown ushanka. And yes, it's interesting that you should point out that wearing a can make you stand out or hide away. Sometimes at the same time. I've noticed that. But it's so fun when people notice and ask about it. An amazing conversation starter. :)

I've always been a bit 'chicken' wearing hats until years ago when I realized if was good enough for James Bond or Brad Pitt in the movie the Counselor or Carroll Shelby it could work for me and it did! Sometimes u have to step out of your comfort zone and BTW hats are extremely erotic on women for some reason, hummm?! IMO of course.

Hello Sartorial Talks team. Excellent presentation, as usual. I wear hats by necessity, because of an eye condition that renders me quite sensitive to light. As a result of this condition, tilting the hat as I often see recommended is extremely uncomfortable because it allows light to enter in through one side. That obscures vision and can be quite uncomfortable. I agree somewhat with Sonya's point about wearing certain styles of hat straight looking a bit naive; but I have to wonder. . . Does that mean I shouldn't wear them? I wouldn't mind a fedora or a trilby, but after seeing so many expressing mild disgust for the straight presentation, I'm feeling apprehensive. I have a similar problem with glasses; some folks say you shouldn't have them pressed too far on your face, but I have to have mine as close to my eyes as I can get them; not only to feel comfortable, but to function properly. (I haven't found a lens size or shape yet which gets around this issue, without wearing ugly sports sunglasses) Can you break style taboos if you find it uncomfortable; or am I better off forgetting about these other hats; sticking with those that look alright straight instead?

It took a little while to begin wearing them regularly and getting used to it but today I think nothing of it and I’ve never had any negative reactions from anybody. I will start wearing it with a bit of a tilt from here on. Thanks for your video.

Thanks Sonya, so informative - I like hats a lot but never knew about this different names besides Bowler and Stetson - in Germany we call the Top Hat Cylinder (Zylinder). I had one from my grand-grandfather which had internal mechanics to make it flat like a plate. To enlarge it again you had to move it in a special way and beat against one side of the brim - this thing is called chapeau claque. Unfortunately I played too much with it as a kid and it broke ....

Hi Tan, I look for an even fine hand weave (I think there are 5 types of weaves), and a super malleable & recoverable Ecuadorian toquilla straw hat. 250 euros for a Panama seems fair for between 17 and 21 weaves/inch (unless you morph into a die hard lover of the craft and want to push further), but you can find decent quality for less money. Always keep the hat in a humidified place and never in a hot car. Like with leather, most grading systems are all over the place with different sellers adopting different grading systems to their advantage. Find some hats then look, feel, try on and experiment. I am no expert though, and tend to be more intuitive, so follow your gut, and don't be shy about starting with a cheaper hat while you come up the learning curve in this rather shady business (pardon pun). Cheers to you ! ~Sonya

Here in Hong Kong wearing hats especially for men is kinda out of place. We usually see women were hats but here I'm one of the few men who were hats. I personally only wear vintage hats which includes my 1920s Borsalino Bowler, 1900s Italian Silk Top Hat, 1940s Stetson Homburg and a Ponte Rialto Straw Boater Hat. While I enjoy wearing hats there are times I wish I don't gather a bit of attention. I don't know how many times when I where my hats people just stare at me like I'm from another time period. One thing I like when I wear my hats with my suits is sometimes it's a good conversation starter. There were a few times strangers would walk up to me and compliment my outfit and times they would talk behind my back. Also a thing to point out in terms of angling hats. At least here in Asia I tend to notice a lot of the younger guys who were hats are inspired by Korean or Japanese celebrity fashion. Which means I typically see them wear there hats far back and tilted kinda like they have a UFO disc on the back of their head.

@@SARTORIALTALKS Hm... I suppose this depends as when I put on my hats I like it to compliment my outfit and also for different occasions.I suppose my go to hats is a Homburg, Bowler, and Boater. These 3 hats are the hats I feel the most comfortable in and I find it fits me better. However I also feel comfortable wearing a top hat if others are also wearing it. There is something about the Top Hat that when you put it on it makes you feel a lot comfortable or should I say more powerful provided you wear a morning coat.

I appreciate the coverage of hats and hope it draws attention to a fact which we have strangely forgotten. HATS ARE IMMENSELY PRACTICAL. If you spend time outside in Summer and don't want to end up with skin cancer, WEAR A HAT. Straw hats should be an essential item in warm weather. If you go out in Winter or in the rain and feel cold or wet, WEAR A HAT. Wool or, better yet, leather hats retain body heat and repel moisture. Since I feel that practical considerations outweigh decorative ones, I recommend generally wearing your hat straight, not tilted.

Dear Sonia, safe the structural confines of tradition which definitely stand in a given context or the other, do you think out it would be generally grotesque for a so called gentleman to have the "right" tailored attire and a top hat worn out of personal taste? I mean the possibly most bygone top hat. At the end of the day, i understand rules and adjustements are often times just subjectively aesthetic but i also know elegance as supposed won't give you all the freedom if it must remain elegance. Thank you

Dear Antoine, If you can wear a top hat in a coherent way and get to the point where you feel natural and elegant, then there is no reason why your shouldn't enjoy your own style. A few notes: A younger generation came to know the Homburg as the "Godfather" hat, as Al Pacino playing Michael Corleone wore one in the movie of that name. Next: Buster Keaton made all of his own porkpie hats out of fedora hats. The Bowler was invented by hat making brothers by that name, for Lock and Co., who were filling an order for the game keepers of estate of Thomas Coke. Lock and Co. calls it the Coke hat, after the first person to order one, and it became known as the Derby in the US. The Stetson, as in the "cowboy hat" started as The Boss Of The Plains, and it had a round top and wide brim. London cabs were designed to accommodate a gentleman wearing a top hat. John F. Kennedy, who was known for eschewing hats in general, was the last President to wear a top hat to his inauguration. It has been said that it was Kennedy's hatless style lead to the demise of hat wearing. This may have had some effect on some people, but the truth is that the automobile and the less time spent walking reduced the need for hats. Architect Louis Sullivan famously said, "Form follows function," and in that regard you could apply the same argument to hats. If you haven't a need to cover your head, you're less likely to do so. I love hats, and since I lack the beautiful head of hair that men like Hugo have, I wear them at almost all times out of doors. I have and wear, depending on season, fedora, bowler, panama, flat, and yes, even ball caps; though the latter only when engaged in actual sport.

You can brush and lint roll for general cleaning and use water mixed with vinegar for wiping down and I've heard sprinkling with starch loosens stains (but haven't tried it). @@SARTORIALTALKS To re-block at home you need to hold the hat over steam (kettle full of boiling water works nicely) until it softens, then re-shape the creases/brim with your fingers while it cools. This works fine for neatening up or making reasonable adjustments to a hats shape, but if you want it looking new or want to fully change the crease/pinch lay-out then you'll need to go to a professional hatter. They will fully steam the crown and re-block it back to a dome shape, then start the creases from new.

Ethan M. Wong has a great article "On the Subject of Fedoras". My favorite style of hat to wear is a style that is in-between a Fedora and a Western hat. They have a very thin ribbon and bound edge with a brim that can snap. Today I wore an Akubra "Crampdraft" in the Silverbelly color. They are based on the vintage Stetson "Open Road" proportions.

Fellow wearer of the Campdraft here. Fun fact: the Campdraft is based on the proportions of the Stetson Open Road because Akubra used to hold a licence from Stetson to produce hats for the Stetson brand in the Australian market. After Akubra stopped doing this, they continued producing the same hat under their own name as the Campdraft.

@@SARTORIALTALKS Thank you for the kind words Sonya and thank you all for the great content on this channel! I try to avoid using the F word, but I do consider the stingy brim a fedora with a very short brim. I owned a vintage stingy brimmed fedora in the past, but I passed it onto a friend a few years ago. They tried it on and looked great wearing it - so I let them keep it. The shorter brim felt off-balance when worn by myself, but I think others can pull it off. I prefer a relaxed wider brim these days for my current style and proportions. For a bit of fedora/western crossover inspiration - I follow the instagram pages for brycelandsco, wellemahatco, and hornskovhats.
