Overlanding conjures up images of Land Rovers and Toyota Land Cruisers in the African Sahara outfitted with roof top tents, gas cans, awnings, and sand ladders. That look has been emulated by Toyota Tacomas in the United States, but there is one key difference-weight. While a 70 Series Toyota Land Cruiser has a payload of 2,700 pounds, a Double Cab Tacoma has a payload of only 1,120 pounds. Add a steel front bumper and winch, a rack and roof top tent, and some drawers & it's easy to surpass the GVWR of a Tacoma in a hurry. So we'll compare the differences between and full-size and mid-size truck with an eye on weight, GVWR and which one fits the needs of overlanding best.

There are a lot of differences between the Ram and the Tacoma shown here, but both trucks are shod with Nitto Ridge Grapplers. This video is brought to you by Nitto, and the Ridge Grappler is a perfect fit for vehicles like this that see more off- road use than trucks we run Terra Grapplers on but not as aggressive as the Trail Grappler or Mud Grappler. The Ram has a payload of 4,600 pounds, so the 1,600-pound dry weight of the Northstar 650SC in the bed doesn’t phase it. This is accomplished through the use of a fully boxed, frame, full floating axles (where there is a hub and bearings at the end of the axle tube and the axle shaft just transfers power but doesn’t have to support the weight), and huge four-wheel disc brakes. The brake rotors on the Ram are 14.2-inches in front and 14.1-inches in the rear. By contrast, the Toyota Tacoma has come with 12.6-inch front rotors and drum brakes in the rear for the past 15 years. The big brakes on the Ram have no issues stopping the 37-inch Nitto Ridge Grapplers, which are rated to carry up to 3,525 pounds each at the maximum inflation pressure. This provides plenty of margin for safety even when the camper is loaded and the 11,000-pound Ram is pulling a trailer behind it.
If you are committed to the Tacoma platform, you want to keep weight and payload in mind for every purchase from bumpers and winches to camper shells and drawers. Mike Henderson built his own “drawerless drawers” to organize his gear without a huge weight penalty. Popular aftermarket drawers weigh around 200 pounds, but Mike’s drawers only weigh 120 pounds and there isless lost space due to tapered drawers and packaging. Mike got a semi-hidden winch mount from Warn and an M8-S winch that only weigh 158 pounds total. That is what my winch weighs! He also sourced aluminum skidplates from RCI that weigh a fraction as much as steel skidplates. Tires are an important consideration with regards to weight as well. The Tacoma comes with P Metric tires that are only rated to carry 2,271 pounds each. The same size (245/75R16) Nitto Dura Grappler is rated to carry 3,042 pounds each! The Tacoma featured here runs skinny LT255/80R17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers are rated to carry 3,195 pounds each and weigh 54 pounds each. And the Method 703 Trail Series aluminum rims are the same weight as the stock wheels but have appropriate backspacing to prevent rubbing, and Method’s Bead Grip technology keeps the tires on the rim at low inflation pressures.
The important thing to remember here is to work within the constraints of your vehicle. The Tacoma is a great truck if you stay within the design parameters, and it is far nimbler off-road that the Ram with the camper on it. Just don’t stray to far from the original intent when building your vehicle. Have a vision in mind and execute it like Mike did and you won’t be disappointed with the end results.
