Really appreciated. After years as an alcohol burner girl, I have only recently joined the gas stove revolution, so am still finding my way a little bit, and knew nothing of remote canister stoves. Worth saying that matches tend to be the choice of champions lighting alcohol burners. Thanks again.

Thanks Shamus, you've given me pause to think, as I've been using a trangia as a habit from guiding groups snow camping years ago', and didn't stop to realise that now it's only me most times, so I'm probably carrying more weight and capability than I need to. Like the look of the MSR pocket rocket II, so will give that a try. Thanks again, great videos as always.

👍 Interesting .. thanks for that. The Trangia .. I agree with you regarding transporting the burner with fuel in it. Like rainwear, no matter how good the sealing, it will eventually leak. I use a little plastic syringe to transfer unused fuel back into a little nalgene fuel bottle which is then used first before going to the Trangia Fuel Bottle. That said .. using the Trangia Burner Lid to snuff out the flame is not going to do the seal in the cap any good and will drastically shorten its service life. The simmer ring is designed for that. My favourite Trangia setup is the Trangia 27 Mini. Married up with the two larger out of the three bowls, and lid from an 'Evernew' Camping Bowl Set bought back in the '70's and a Quechua MH100 SS One Litre Pot .. perfect for me. The whole Doodah, together with the Burner, Pot Holder, Syringe and a little Folding Tripod (made from SS Bicycle Spokes .. the Tripod to accommodate the smaller Evernew Camping Bowls when required) nests together very nicely. Yes, its not ultra-lightweight .. but then, at 72, with wrecked knees and hip joints feeling their age, I'm no longer into distance hiking and 'how far did we do today' / 'if it's Tuesday, it must be Belgium' Mode. My local forest sits less than 100m behind and to the rear of me. Gas .. I use occasionally .. especially in more 'sensitive' areas .. during forest fire bans, in urban areas .. city parks, outside supermarket malls, etc, etc. I have a 'Camping Gaz Bluet 206' Set bought back in the 70's. It's somewhat bulky (the gas container not removable until empty, requiring one to possibly having to carry a full backup) but it's reliable, has served me well and .. is paid for. The replacement gas containers are available at my local supermarket and practically everywhere else here in Switzerland and, are the cheapest per gram of gas that I know of. Maybe .. one day .., I'll spoil myself with a little burner that I can slip together with a 100g canister into a small cup .. hmm .. Once again, a nice watch .. thanks. I'm old enough to have learned that one is never too old to learn something so I'll subscribe and see what else comes out of the pot. Take care ..

Loving your stuff Shamus! Someone has probably said this before but here goes. How dare you snuff out a Trangia spirit burner with the lid! Thank you 😊 I’ve inspected literally hundreds of Trangias belonging to various groups over the years. To be honest the majority have leaked and they all stink 😂 Using the lid to snuff may not be best practice, but the other burner that I used in the video leaked on the short walk from the car to the video location - it was brand new. Personally I would rather use an open bath spirit burner, at leat when it’s finished burning there is no residue. But that’s just my view, we all see things differently, I just talk about what I do 🐶

Hi Shamus. Brilliant no compromise easy explanation of the major stove types and fuel! I only use one stove and that's the Jetboil Summo and I love it because I can easily heat up two boil in the bag meals in one go and then use the water for drinks. I never ever try to disconnect the cook container from the burner when i've got liquid in it and I never fix the lid on. That way I can just turn off the gas, remove the lid and pick up the whole thing via the strap and neoprene insulated jacket without the danger of burning myself. It works brilliantly for me! Nice. I've never tried petrol and I didn't like the the mess of solid fuel. Alcohol gives a primal satisfaction right enough (also good for burning , lol!). But, like you, I prefer the pocket rocket style with a leaning towards the one with the flexible tube rather than with the burner screwed on top as I just worry a bit about stability when there's a full container atop the assembly.I think its also easier to get an effective windshield around the burner if it's low down on the ground. That was a great comparison of stoves. Thanks again!

Hi Shamus. I have a few stoves - Jetboil Minimo (great but heavy), MSR Pocket Rocket and I also use alcohol stoves. My set up for the latter is the brilliant Trail Designs Ti Tri. Expensive but really efficient and very hard to knock over. It also comes with a set up that allows you to use twigs etc to cook on. I reckon it's far less likely to get knocked over than gas. And if you use it with a Zelph Starlyte alcohol burner or similar which costs about a tenner it can't spill as the alcohol is absorbed in some wadding within the burner. That and the use of Vango bio ethanol instead of smelly meths and a number of your concerns are overcome.

Great and very informative video as ever on your channel. I have both gas and Trangia, my worry with gas is always knowing how much is left in there. You stated that the butane in your gas cartridges boiled off at -0.5 degrees Celsius. The butane in those cartridges is actually iso-butane, which has been treated to boil off at around -11 degrees Celsius. The isobutane has also been mixed with propane (boiling point -40 degrees Celsius), further lowering the boiling point of the mixture. Not a big deal on a warm summer's day, but as the temperature approaches or drops below freezing this little detail starts to make a difference. This is why so many gas canisters are labelled as "4 season fuel" or similar.
@outdoorsinspiration9284

I Know that, and you know that, Mark. What I actually said was that - "butane boils off at -0.5C" - Not the Butane in this particular canister. I was keeping things simple to explain a concept. Off topic, what is the mini inflator you use on your sleep mats?. Hexamine🤮Great channel!

Shamus....been using multiple types stoves for years and I learned new things watching your video. Thank you. Quick question. Regarding the inversion of gas canisters to burn liquid lpg rather than gas, can you only do this if you have a pre-heat tube on your burner? I have a remote-canister Vango stove which is similar to your Fire Maple but it does not have the pre-heat tube. I could just go and test it but I think it would be more prudent to ask first!!!!

@@outdoorsinspiration9284 Thanks mate! If I had considered the option of a pre-heat mechanism I would have bought a different stove back then. I would imagine this is a good way of squeezing out the last few drops of lpg you always get at the end of life of every canister.

Anthony - in fairness it’s not the be all and end all :) keep your canister warm and insulate it from the ground on a cold day and it will do well - I’ve seen reports from folk doing multi-days in snow with a canister top stove by doing just this 👍

@@outdoorsinspiration9284 Yes, but I don't recall what it was called. You have everything down like a professional, great audio, outstanding 1080 x 60 which on a laptop is really fantastic, but (there is always a but), you might consider time stamping the different stoves in the description. I know you can do it manually, but also, KZitem recently released something or other that allows you do it automatically or similar. Just means that for anyone searching for information on a particular stove would find it quicker - okay, perhaps they won't watch the whole video or maybe they will, who knows. Also, you get the first three # hashtags that KZitem will use in their algorithm so use them such as:- #Trangia etc. they will appear under the description in blue. @outdoorsinspiration9284

Under normal temperatures the gas should be fine - but on cold winter mornings on cold ground, yes, very definitely they will slow down. I normally keep my 'mostly' used canisters for stove tests and suchlike at home - once they are completely empty, there is a device called a 'crunchit' made by Jetboil that allows me to pierce the canister and throw it in the bin - ill pop up a video using this soon, good point :)

Have you tried putting a teaspoon of water into the meths to reduce the amount of carbon left on the cooking pot? You can also put a curled up piece of card/paper or natural string into the meths to act as a wick to help you see if the cooker is burning! Prevents singing the hairs on the palms of your hands and fingers!!

Hi Shamus, I.ve only recently subscribed to you're channel so plenty of catching up to do. I mentioned to you this morning about recently purchasing the Trangia mini. Well this was because my Jetboil flash has let me down. Last year I set up camp near the summit of Pen Y Fan , not knowing that Go Outdoors had sold me two canisters from a duff batch so I decided to pack up in the dark and bugger off all the way back to Bristol. Also a few weeks ago I wanted to head to Dartmoor at short notice and couldn't find anywhere selling the gas canisters. Well, thats no good to me so in a huff I ordered the Trangia mini. Like you said you can get fuel anywhere so I got some meths from B&Q Sorted!! I would however, after watching a review like to get the Trangia Triangle and gel burner which would be be even more bomb proof than the meths version as a back up stove because you can't spill the gel. Anyway enough waffle and thanks for sharing Shamus, ATB Mark :)

Hi Mark, thanks for sharing that. I was out with a mate who had the same thing happen - I was going to include in the video 'check your canister before you go' - but it was already nearly half an hour long . But it is a really important point, I always light up the stove before leaving home. When it happened to my mate, it indirectly caused a long chain of events that culminated in two ambulances and the cardiology unit at the local hospital - Honestly - but it's a long story.

I once took out a safety pin from my first aid kit and cleaned the jets on my trangia burner then pushed the safety pin through the strap on my rucksack for 'safe keeping'. In the morning when putting away my thermarest neoair xtherm mat I didn't realise the pin was exposed and not in the 'safety' position. This resulted in a 10ml gash through my very expensive mat. QUESTION: (Thanks for the Video very informative, appreciated). While looking at the Fire-Maple on Amazon, noticed from one of the reviews of a similar Stove (the Primus Express Spider II) that you can (apparently) get a conversion kit, that also allows use of Liquid Fuel. Do you happen to know if you can do the same with your Fire-Maple? (Also, is your Fire-Maple the FMS-117H or some other Model?) Cheers M
@outdoorsinspiration9284

Hi Martin - I have the original Primus Spider - this has a pre-heat tube to vaporise LPG ie pressurised gas that is liquid as it leave the canister - it isn’t a conversion, it is factory fitted. The Fire Maple I was using in the video also has a pre-heat tube - there are models that don’t … be sure to pick the one with pre-heat tube. Be sure to warm the stove, running it on gas before inverting a canister. I hope this helps.

If you snuff the Trangia with the lid it will wreck the rubber seal. That’s what makes the seal poor. The Vango bio ethanol doesn’t smell anything like as bad as meths. All that said, I do like a pocket rocket.

The original Trangia burner (and probably some of the other "better" alcohol stoves?) has a cloth (or maybe fiberglass?) wick or liner inside it that helps the fuel to evaporate as it wicks it to the hot upper part of the burner. I believe some of the knock-offs are so inefficient because they lack this wick so the fuel evaporation is much less effective. kzitem.info/news/bejne/rnefzZx7foubgZg
@outdoorsinspiration9284
4 жыл бұрын
Thats interesting. You're right, a wick can help heat the fuel, but once it's up to temperature and vaporised it should 'jet' in an efficient burner - some are just poorly designed. Some people make a small wick with a some kitchen roll - this keeps burning an generates warmth while the alcohol catches up. I started to include that snippet in the video, but you can only cover so much and its nearly half an hour long :)

Thank you Anthony 😊 My recipes are very simple. Like you I dehydrate, I don't have a vacuum packer so submerse the mylar foil package in water to drive air out and include an oxygen absorber before sealing. I think it would be a useful video, if for no other reason to demonstrate that it isn't rocket science. I have a relatively cheap dehydrator from Lakeland that does the job perfectly well for my needs 😊👍🐶

Good stuff Shamus and I've subscribed - I have been camping for a couple of years now, well maybe 50+.............I like the fact you can legally wild camp on Dartmoor, not so lucky here in Yorkshire but plenty of opportunities for 'discreet' trips. I always use a Trangia in winter because I feel safer with them - you just have to keep your alcohol warm!!! I have a friend who did a good job on his eyebrows in winter with a gas stove. Other than my trusty Trangia I, like others in the comments, have discovered Soto stoves - quality is excellent, probably because they are Japanese. Well engineered and personally I think the new Amicus just shades the pocket rocket, certainly in the wind. Cheers

Hi Shamus. What a great video sharing your thoughts on the different types of burner. I started wildcamping again a couple of years ago after a break of nearly 20 years from military service and decided to completely start a fresh with new equipment. So, having looked around and spent hours researching I settled on the Jetboil Sumo. Yes it’s a bit bulky but I wanted the convenience of having everything stored inside itself and a large pot for the boil in the bag meals. It’s a great machine and does everything I ask of it!
