My experience was with AEON having the lowest fees. These fees in japan can depend on the time of day/day of the week too.

Did you mean using the debit card to withdraw in Japanese 711 ATM? Someone told me there are machines in airport taking US bills and gives out yen, how is that comparing with ATM? BTW, I find your site VERY helpful. Greeting from Peru.

Yea I am referring to pulling out cash in Japan ATMs. I have never heard of those machines, but they do have exchange booths at airports.

Rates at airports are bad though from what I read. Also exchange in local currency and not U.S dollars or you will be charged a conversion fee.

How does the exchange rate compare to the market exchange rate like what is shown when you google? Is it similar or is it higher (aka hidden "fee")?
@harblife
Жыл бұрын
Maybe 1 - 2 yen less than what google will advertise. If you click the option to get charged in your currency at the ATM, then yes you will get hit with some minor fees. It's always better to get charged in Yen and let you bank do the exchange rate.

Hello! Thanks for the video! Going to Japan next week. Is using an atm to withdraw yen better than bringing usd to exchange at currency exchange?
@harblife
Жыл бұрын
Yes. I have probably used a currency exchange like once. ATMS are much more convenient, and the exchange rate is almost always the same. I would only use an exchange if I'm changing out a TON of money. Otherwise, you're good to just wait until you arrive in Japan to take out yen.

@@ananyaamara Keep trying. I had the same problem with the JR Pass and the Universal Japan studios tickets. My only advice is to use Internet explorer in the oldest computer you can get. My newest laptop (2022) got stuck in the payment process everytime (with Google chrome). It worked better with Microsoft edge. But it will definitely work with internet explorer. Also you should check with your bank, sometime they block international transactions when they don't recognize the website.

Where is the best (and safest) place to exchange dollars? There are not many yens in my country. We could only find 10,000 yens, so we are traveling with dollars. I want to avoid scams.
@harblife

Just wait until you get to Japan to exchange money. And 10,000 yens are normal to carry around. Those are the only things a Japan ATM will usually have.
