i also have a question about mic placement : the physics says we have to place the mic as close to the source as possible due the fact that sound amplitude diminishes with the square of the distance( a $20 mic at 5 inches will sound better than a $1000 mic at 3 feet) . so why dont we use head boom that brings the mic 1-2 inches from the mouth(like www.amazon.com/Pyle-Pro-PMEMS10-Omni-Directional-Microphone-System/dp/B003D2YRLA) rather than the typical lav placement on the chest or shotgun overhead on a boom stand that are 5-10 inches away from the mouth?
@curtisjudd
8 жыл бұрын
That's a great question and yes, placing a mic on the cheek sounds more natural than placing the mic on a person's chest which tends to sound boomier and more resonant, not very natural. The main reason is that for dramatic narratives, having a mic in the shot just isn't desired. And some directors don't like them showing even in documentaries and interviews. My favorite place to hide lavalier mics is at the top of the forehead in the hair, in a hat, or on eyeglasses. It sounds much better and more natural and follows when the talent turns their head. But it takes longer to set up so it is a tradeoff.

Explain why for every step along the way. Insider stuff and standard practices are unparallelled information for amateurs. I would love to see a series of this kind of stuff for you. Sorry For The Copy and Paste. hello Curtis, i have to say you have the best Audio Channel out here for Video recording.. i just subscribed after watching many of your videos. Anyways i have a problem well sort of a problem... lol issue lets say, i recently bought The Tascam DR-60DmkII after watching some videos including yours. The issue that i am fighting right now, its the hiss sound coming from the device it self, even if i don't have a microphone connected to the device if i hit record it has a base hiss sound that it won't go away, lowering levels -db and what not, seems like the hiss is coming from the pre amp of the tascam dr-60d mkii. i have tried many settings and it seems like i can't get rid of it, The mic i have its the Rode NT1-A, i have also tested it with the Audio Technica Audio Pro 70 lav mic. i did notice that in this video you also had the hiss sound while testing it, but it was much lower then mine.... could you share your settings? and is this hiss sound normal? or i bought a defective product

Hi Curtis, I'm typically a one man band. If my main use for mics is interior dialogue with occasional on location walking and talking type shoots yet I already own an NTG-3 would I be better suited using the COS-11D or the AT4053B for the majority of my interviews? Correct me if I'm wrong but lavs sound more warm to me than boom mics in most applications especially in hard to control indoor environments without a sound crew.
@curtisjudd

Hi, If you're shooting on your own, you'll have a very hard time hand booming a mic and operating camera for a walk and talk so a lav mic sounds like the right mic for the job. Mounting an AT4053b (or any other mic) on top of the camera will generally not sound warm.

Hi Curtis, just stumbled onto your channel and you have a wealth of resources! Thank you for sharing! Just wondering on this: in a controlled shoot, would you elect to use a lav system or go with a shotgun/boom scenario? I'm debating a G3 or Sony UWD system over a proper shotgun (Sein. 413). Looking for the most versatile situation... Cheers from Dubai, Chris :)
@curtisjudd
7 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, When I have the option, I record with both a boom and lav. In those situations, I almost always end up using just the boom recording because it sounds much better. Lavs are tricky: They often pick up the sound of clothing or hair brushing across them, even when expertly hidden. If you're using wireless, there's another league of challenges altogether. If versatility is your top priority, a lav may fit the bill, but be ready to do retakes when you get unwanted noise.

For clarification, you prefer the Re20 for voiceover work like podcasting, would you also say it is a good audiobook recording mic as well? I'm looking for a replacement for my AT4050CM5 and keep thinking about ACX's general warning against dynamic mics. But they would certainly reduce the pops, esses.
@curtisjudd
4 жыл бұрын
For recording long-form content like audio books, I generally prefer large diaphragm condenser microphones. Dynamics generally sound less natural. Don't get me wrong - I use them for live streaming and podcasting, but I generally just prefer the sound of condensers for voice over long-form content like audio books. And if ACX recommends condensers, probably good to stick with their recommendation if the goal is to get hired. If you're getting a lot of pops and sibilance, might look at alternative positions for the mic. With my sibilant voice, I often move condenser microphones up vertically a bit so that the capsule is more in line with my nose vs. my mouth. That helps with both pops and sibilance.

Hi Rivius, since I shot this, I reviewed the Deity S-Mic 2 which is a competitor to the NTG4+, but sounds quite a lot better. For shotgun mic's that go on-camera your "best" mic is comprised of two Rode mics, neither of which really fit the bill? Rode is known to heavily promote themselves, and whether it's accurate or not, it sure seems like they muscled their recommendation in here. There are so many great on-camera shotgun XLR mic's that "do it all." One of the best known is the Audio Technica AT875R -- it's both efficient and produces great sound for on-camera applications... And it costs less than either of the Rode mic's you mention.
@curtisjudd
8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tyler, appreciate the input. Good to hear another confirmation that the AT875R is a favorable option - I've heard several others suggest the same recently. I've got it on my "to-try" list. I should mention that RODE had no influence on my opinions here. In fact, I don't think they'd be happy to hear me say that I prefer their older, less expensive NTG2 over their newer, more expensive NTG4+. Also, I purchased both of these mics with my money and am not sponsored by RODE. Over the years I have purchased several of their microphones and am happy with most of them. Notable exception: the RODE Lavalier. All that to say, they did not muscle their way into this video, I maintain my independent opinion here. This video was not sponsored by anyone but me. Regarding the on-camera mics: They both work fine. However, my hesitation is that I'm not generally a fan of on-camera microphones except when I have exhausted all other possibilities. My reasoning: On-camera mics generally sound like they're too far away and pick up too much ambience when on-camera - unless it is ambience you're after.

Hi Curtis, if I am filming a 4 people interview in a living room setting, does one shotgun mic put in the middle of them produce an acceptable sound? or I must use four clip mics for each talent? I just ordered a Zoom H6, do you have any recommendation for the mic? (The church interview project will always include 3-4 people)
@curtisjudd
7 жыл бұрын
Hi yirenmijoy, you can use one shotgun microphone but that is not ideal because shotgun microphones are designed to NOT pick up sound from the sides so all 3 or 4 people will not be picked up in an optimal way. Ideally, there would be one microphone for each person. I would recommend either a RODE NT5 or Samson C02, one for each person. We compared these here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/0mOYxWWdiIuAeIY Lavalier microphones are tricky and end up being just as expensive so I'd stick with boom microphones if possible. If your budget doesn't have room for 4, perhaps 2 would be better than one. Then each set of two people would share a mic. Best wishes!

Which wireless system is better Rode Link or the classic Sennheiser G3 ew-100 ? I've been looking at the Sennheiser ew 112-p G3 not sure what the difference is, but it's cheaper. On other reviews I saw that the mic that came with the Rode Link was faulty and not as good. However I did like that the Rode had a rotating digital signal. I know the Sennheiser has never let me down in the past. What's your take on those systems and mics?
@curtisjudd
7 жыл бұрын
+Musique Decor Multimedia Design these two are quite different. The Sennheiser transmits the audio as an analogue signal while the RODE transmits a digital signal. One is not so much better than the other. I will say that the Sennheiser is more widely used, and it takes a little more learning. You need to determine which radio band you can use in your local area and buy the G3 kit for that band. The RODE is easier to use if you are lucky enough to not have any interference issues. Also, if you are in the US, the FCC will be removing some bands from public use in the next few months so you'll want to research that if you decide to go with the G3. Good luck!

@curtisjudd

Hi Jermaine, those two are about the same so in that case it is really a matter of preference on other factors. The H5 has longer battery life but requires a little more work in the menu to get things set up. The Tascam has more physical buttons and switches making setup quick and easy but the battery life is not quite as strong. The Tascam can be powered by a USB battery while the H5 cannot. In terms of audio quality, they're virtually identical in my experience.

I don't know if you have actually reviewed the Shure SM58... but I really hate its guts. :-) It is so well-known and is what people recommend for any cheap handheld microphone, for two reasons: First, it is almost indestructible, which is nice. And second, every audio technician in the world knows its horrible frequency response way too well and how to correct it as good as possible. For 100$, almost any other mic you look at will sound better than the SM58. But it will remain at the top because it is at the top. Tough to beat that.

Cool Curtis! I have been promoting and using the AT4053b for years, and still love it. I have the NTG-2 and NTG-3 shotguns as well, and the NTG-3 is definitely my go to shotgun in every case. But recently I picked up a pair of Rode WS8 furry wind screens to use on my NT-55 matched pair outside, and I discovered that those furrys also fit the AT4053b (a little snugly). This is great because although the NTG-3 sounds amazing, it's long and heavy, and when mounted on my Sony FS5 camera, can feel clunky. So I tested the WS8 on the AT4053b outside in med-strong wind, and it did OK! In normal conditions and light breezes the WS8 is totally effective, and in stronger wind the rumble that gets through is very light, and totally removable. So that mic is my new on-camera mic most of the time. I used to keep my hyper indoor always, and my shotgun outdoors always, but now thanks to the WS8 I am enjoying the smaller size of the hyper. Check it out if you're interested. They are only 25.00 a pop. Cheers. As a side note I actually leave the low-cut in the AT4053b engaged all the time. I find it to be a slightly tubby mic, and the low cut does not result in any thinness in the voice. So that also helps with wind at no cost to the sound quality.

Hi, could you tell me how much of a difference there is with the NTG-2 and AT4053b while recording indoors? I recently got the NTG-4, and was quite disappointed by how much of the reverb it picked up in my small room, so I was wondering if AT4053b is going to perform better in that case. Off axis pickup isn't an issue for me, as I'll always have the mic pointed towards the correct direction. I also watched Curtis' other video comparing the NTG 2 and AT 4053b, but that room had a very different characteristic than my room, it was bigger and less cubical.

Hi! I do not understand your question. But if you are asking whether any of these microphones can connect to a laptop, yes, the Audio Technica AT2005 has a USB output which goes directly into a mac or PC. The RODE smartLav+ can go into your laptop if your laptop works with smartphone headsets (can read the microphone). And the XLR based mics can also record to your laptop if you have an audio interface like the Focusrite Scarlett 2i4: amzn.to/2ccAxiY I hope that helps!

Curtis Great Review.. and I wish I could take your online course, which is exactly what I need... but I use FCPX. Can you make a video on optimizing sound for dialogue using FCPX? Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. :)
@curtisjudd
8 жыл бұрын
+Real World Endo thanks! I use FCPX too, but edit my audio in Audition since it has a much fuller feature set. I usually avoid processing audio in NLEs because you don't get enough visibility of the waveforms and cannot apply effects except as real-time effects to a track. The problem with that is you cannot tell very well how to set the effects such as threshold on a compressor - there's no dB scale to see where to set that threshold. You bring up a good question though. Perhaps I need to demonstrate why processing audio in a video editing app (NLE) is so difficult. Thanks for the idea!
@AANasseh
8 жыл бұрын
+Curtis Judd Thanks Cutis. Keep in mind, however, that the majority of FCPX users doing talking heads are not editing on an NLE for super duper professional sound, but rather sound that will get their point across without being too amateurish. Let's say that talking head videos are a different sound scale than an audiophile's music track. I think for those editing on an NLE the goal is practical advice to get the most out of what's already there without round-tripping to another software. The goal is efficiency in that case, not the maximum audio quality. Thanks!

Hi Curtis, I've spent a week going through all your videos. I have a unique situation. I'm the camera operator to a KZitem Vlogger. I'm always behind camera, but I do interact and talk with the talent. Our first attempt was the talent using AVX wireless lav kit, fed into the A7SII. With myself using a Zoom H1 with lav. In post (prem pro cc 2017) I noticed you could hear me in the background on his mic, and he could be heard in the background on my mic. Also my audio was very loud (my fault). When I synced them, I had to reduce my gain to around -7 as I was so much louder than him. This had a strange effect where you were hearing the audio from my mic, but also my background audio from his mic was coming through. Even though they were synced you could tell something wasn't right. My ideas are, 1) use a zoom H5 and have both my mic and his avx receiver plugged in. Due to this recording 100% in sync it should mean that even though our mics are picking each other up in the background you shouldn't be able to hear it. Or 2) I use a hypercardioid mic like the E845 which, in theory, shouldn't pick him up in the background. Have you ever had an issue like this before, and do you think I'm going down the correct route to fix it? If you do reply I really appreciate your time. Thank you.
@curtisjudd
7 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes, you have run into the classic multi-mic problem. Mics with more directional pickup patterns or dynamic mics which are less sensitive to sound that is not right near them will help. But even then you still may need to do some mixing to solve the problem more effectively. You essentially need to fade down the mic that should not be capturing the sound at any given time. We're planning to demonstrate how to do this during recording or in post in our episode this week (if things work the way I'm planning).

Hi Curtis, just watched your latest video, many thanks for that. A little update for you, today I used the zoom H5 again for some solo speaking. In post once again it didn't sound 'right', with the knowledge I've gained from your videos I loaded the file into Audition. The issue for me was I was using the Zoom H5 internal stereo mics to record my mono voice. I split the track into 2 mono tracks and played back the L track. It was perfect, crystal clear with no issues. I exported that track and added it to my video, everything great. I'm binge watching your entire back catalog on both your channels, thank you for all the hard work.

Thank you Curtis. I know that this is an older video but I'm on a catch up!! One thing with all mics, let alone lavalier is the problem of self noise and how it's advertised with each microphone. The Aputure, as you say is low noise and yet if you believe the figures on the box, it should be higher noise than others which show a better performance on the box, but unfortunately don't when you use them!! The figures don't seem to match real life performance, so reviews like this are extremely useful. Another low noise one seems to be the Boya m1 which boasts >75dB for noise, yet the Aputure states >65dB. If only we could get these figures onto an even playing field. There is currently some great work going on in the field of headphone measurements in order to get more comparable FR graphs and what constitutes 'flat' and maybe we could use a similar idea one day with microphones in order to help us more informatively with our choices.

Hi Dave, I like the RODERec app. (The RODE Reporter app which is designed for use with their iXLR microphone adapter experienced some dropout issues in my testing. The only issue I've ever had with it is that with *some* non-RODE microphones, it does no recognize them and thus will not record from them. But it has always worked well with RODE's microphones and most third-party lighting or 3.5mm microphones.

Have any idea where the Sennheiser ME66 would sit in your shotgun mic category. Always been one of my favorites. Is it worth the extra $200 over the Rode NTG2?

Hi James, I used it just one time and it seemed good though I don't know that I have enough experience with the ME66 to have an opinion vs. the NTG2. One thing I can say for sure is that the output signal from the ME66 is quite a bit stronger than the NTG2's so you won't have to push most preamps as hard with the ME66.

How does the blue yeti at the ~120$ price point hold up?

Pretty well in the reviews I've heard but I haven't used it personally. If I were to get it, I'd go with the pro version.

@Curtis Juss: Is one of these lavalier microphones (or maybe all of them) compatible with the Rode VXLR+ 1/4 inch jack to XLR adapter? I just wonder if it is possible to connect them to a regular microfone input with phatom power? Thanks for your channel.really helpful to watch them!

Hi Bastian, the RODE VXLR will work with a wireless receiver - I've used it with RODELink and Azden wireless systems. If you want to connect the lavalier directly to the mixer/recorder you will need a more expensive adapter which also converts the 48V phantom power down to 3-10V plugin power which is what lavalier microphones need. Here's one such adapter: bhpho.to/2xgJk0H I hope that helps!

Hi Curtis, I’ve got a bit of an echo problem in my small room where we make youtube videos. I’ve done all I can to minimize it with blankets, etc. but still having issues. I have the Rode NTG2 but it’s not rejecting as well as my Electro Voice RE320, which is about 18” from the dialogue. Do you think the NT5 would do a better job rejecting of the room echo? Thanks, Scott

Hi Scott, no, the NT5 has a wider polar pattern than the NTG2 so it probably would not isolate as much as the NTG2. What have you done with blankets and which type of blankets? Do you have a hard floor (tile, wood)? I think the answer here is going to be more work on preventing sound reflections off of hard surfaces, or use a dynamic microphone 3 - 4 inches from the mouth.

Hey Curtis, thanks for your info, its great help for a novice. Can you tell me if it is possible to record to lapel mics through an adapter into the one DSLR simultaneously?

You're welcome! Yes, two of the three of these audio adapters will allow you to record two lavalier microphones into a DSLR: kzitem.info/news/bejne/o5Vm1ZiVn5GCnoY

Hey Curtis, I’m having issues in post production prepping my podcast audio and finishing it for export to web. Particularly each step including normalization, limiter and compression. I’m having issues with extra background noise do to the condition of the room we recorded in. Things like echoing or bleeding of one persons mic over to the other cause of spontaneous levels of dialog. It probably has a lot to do with how close we are in proximity and the treatment of the room, so my only option is to play with compression. Do you have a course or video on such a thing ?
@curtisjudd

Hi, there are a few videos that will help. I would strongly recommend hanging blankets in the room while recording to manage the reverb. Trying to do that in post never works perfectly. Miking 2+ people to reduce bleed: kzitem.info/news/bejne/l3hjy5-spJiKmWk Mixing 2+ people while recording (but you can do this in post as well): kzitem.info/news/bejne/tpBm35uDnXt6dqQ Loudness Normalizing in Audition (including compression): kzitem.info/news/bejne/z6mM0WRnp35hlY4 Good luck!

Great round up and review. Keep making these. Everyone should do these because it's way more useful. Curious to hear you thoughts on the Sennheiser microphones k6 power and me66 mic and that whole system. Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback! I've added the ME66 to my list. My brother has one and we shot a quick piece with it. Pretty solid little mic.

Your prior help was great and you did make a suggestion. Your reviews and help lead me to the Azden 250 and the Rode NTG series (XLR). Based on the following repeat, will you again make a recommendation. Audio quality is major concern: I'm virtually locked in to camera mount. Neither boom nor wireless is practical and seldom have access to Sound Panel. a minimum of 'Tail' is desired. Shooting variety shows with singers, comics, loud music, usually off to sides. Tripod mount from 15 - 60' back. Audience mostly from behind or around cam (Canon xa 30). Preferred features: battery + phantom, battery light, gain control, frequency control. Have $400 budget. Thank you for your professional videos. It is so annoying listing to clowns that say little and don't seem to have a planned direction on their reviews. I am a retired, high end, classroom instructor/trainer so I appreciate you and will tell my friends.

Hi Vince, I'm stumped in terms of recommendations given the requirements. Cardioid mics do not have a tail on the rear. The RODE NT3 can be powered via an internal 9V battery but it does not have a gain or frequency control. To get those, you'd probably need to add a mixer. But have a look at the NT3 and let me know if that's heading down the right path. Best wishes!
