A lot of people dont know the ACOG has a fast range finding feature. If the line for the 400 on your reticle is the same width as the torso of an e-type/average person, then the target is roughly 400m away. Works for all the ranged lines in the reticle

This is a great video. Many customers under-think and de-prioritize optics, yet it's the most important accessory to almost any firearm now. When it comes to this particular firearm platform they nail the (3) primary options. All I would add, personally, is that action competition leads R&D and for several years multigun open division victories are dominated by LPVO with offset RDS. Many of those competitions are in the daytime.

Thats why I normally detest SFP scopes, with a new exceptions like cheap scopes without BDCs or things like 1-4x or 1-6x LPVOs, reasonably I think any use of the BDC _is_ going to likely be on 4x anyways. It would be weird to choose to shoot at BDC ranges on 1x.

@@M4c223c You don't need to. Your rifle can hit anything out to 300 yards with the center dot. If you're shooting further than that-- then why keep your zoom at 1-3x?? When you actually need to see the reticle it's there (when you zoom in).. When you don't need it, it's out of the way. It's a great system. I go FFP or prism.
@calholli
10 ай бұрын
Also, that's not how it works. On a SFP scope, the reticle doesn't zoom in or out: it's FIXED. So BDC is only calibrated to a certain magnification and it will be off on all the others. It's typically calibrated to the last zoom in.. So if it's a 1-6x magnification: it will be calibrated on the 6x magnification. Lets say you choose to zero it at 3x instead of 6x: none of the BDC lines are going to match up with the calibration. Those BDC lines are still only calibrated to the 6x zoom and if you're looking through it at 3x, then they will all be off (except your zeroed center dot)............. If you are using a BDC reticle, FFP is best. SFP is for a simple center cross reticle, where you plan on dialing to your shooting distance and just using that center dot/ cross. SFP is not designed to use hold overs (unless you are at the max zoom). So if you don't like doing the math and turning dials on every shot--- then don't get a SFP; because that is it's purpose.
@calholli
10 ай бұрын
@@M4c223c And your conclusion is that FFP LPVO's suck because you can't read subtensions that you don't' need? Doing something professionally doesn't mean you've been doing it right; it just means that you've been paid to do it. FFP's are great -- so Idk what your point was. They are certainly better than SFP scopes, except maybe on a bolt rifle where you're going to dial every shot anyway.

So… 1) Eotech + magnifier 2) ACOG + RMR 3) LVPO (+ RMR) 1) is best for noobs and if you only have one gun for everything 2) is best if you do more medium range than close range and is easier to transition between close and far targets. 3) is good for longer ranges and precision (added an RMR to the top of this rifle may give similar setup to ACOG + RMR) Conclusion: get three rifles, 1) with red dot and magnifier for home defense on a 10.5” gun. 2) 12.5-13.9” rifle with Acog + RMR for your apocalypse gun 3) 16”+ rifle with lvpo if you shoot longer distance more than close distance and do 3 gun competitions

But ended up buying a trijicon vcog -- its bombproof just like the acog -- I have never had any issue with it -- and I haven't babied it -- I am not using it as a bat or purposefully abusing it -- but it has never lost zero ever. Mind you an LVPO is NOT a replacement for a RDS equipped rifle for cqb etc... But the vcog allows me the ability to reach out to 300-500yds all day. Can't do that as 'easily' with a 1x setup. One thing to mention (that has probably been covered in the comments already) with magnifiers on red dots is that they will obviously multiply the dot size such that an Aimpoint 2 MOA dot and the image scale together with a 3x magnifier (dot gets 3x bigger as does the background). However, holographic sights like the Eotech use a center dot that's much finer than 1 MOA (even though our eyes perceive it as roughly 1 MOA), so under magnification, the Eotech's dot doesn't seem to scale the same way with magnification (it is being magnified, but it's so small that we can't perceive the 3x increase). This can be helpful when trying to make precise, deliberate shots. Note, this phenomenon is often written to say that the dots in holographic weapon sights don't increase in size with magnifiers like red dots do. Of course they do, it's just that they're so small to begin with, it only appears that way to our eye.

People who haven’t got to spend time with a TA31-CH (classic Acog, but with the crosshair reticle) tend to not realize just how incredible the actual sight picture is. 4x on the TA31 is VERY different than 4x on an Lpvo/ magnifier. The horizontal field of view is insane, you can see soooo much, and the glass quality is unparalleled. It’s like sitting closer to the tv on a first person shooter game sort of. You have such a sharp pristine image combined with such a wide field of view, and when you throw in the ultra fine crosshair reticle that gets as bright as you could ever want with no batteries, and all in a bombproof, ultra light package ? Man. It’s good.

I've been really happy with the ACOG & RMR combo on my 13.9. It was a great optic to go back to basics and learn proper zero and holds with a scope after getting frustrated with the LPVO (thanks Executive Training Group!). I haven't had much eye relief issues with it and the RMR sitting high doesn't bother me either since I'm used to shooting with a red dot on an A1 upper. When it comes to red dots themselves, Aimpoint all day. They're tough and reliable and the single dot is all I need. In all honesty though, trying to find out which optic to get goes back to one simple question: where do I live? If you're in a city or dense town/suburbia, then the red dot will probably be best since you may own something that's 14.5 or shorter. If you're living out in a small town or rural area, then the ACOG or LPVO is gonna be your best option since you probably own something 13.7 or longer.

I feel like another issue with LPVOs for newer shooters is they may not be willing to drop the coin necessary to get a good one. I had a few cheaper options when I started and never really liked them. However, I own a razor hd gen 2-e and a K16i and my opinion has completely changed. The glass quality, clearness, and huge eyebox has made these some of my favorites. Throw a top mounted rmr and they do pretty much everything I can ask from. 5.56 gun

But the primary reason is because I'm clumsy and break stuff all of the time so it sounds like the ACOG+RMR is the best option for me

After like 14 years of buying rifles, shooting rifles, and kitting them out and trying different things, there’s 3 things I learned: 1) unless it’s a purely HD rifle, you need the ability for some sort of magnification. Even if it’s a basic 3x PA prism or a flip magnifier. You need something for any GP rifle. 2) that magnification is probably best served in a simple prism optic. The ACOGs are king of the hill, but for 25% of the cost, the PA prism is a perfectly good stand in. 3) Most everyone would do well to have their main GP rifle as a 20”. Us civilians aren’t doing CQB and doing solo room clearing in structures. That is to be avoided at nearly any cost. A 20” barrel benefits you in EVERYTHING else besides tight room to room stuff.

That said- this is a very personal, very subjective thing. There is no "best thing" in this area, folks. No real "one size fits all" for every application either. They're all good options and you need to, personally, find what works best for you as an individual.

The USMC VCOG SCO 1-8 addresses some of the issues you have with LVPOs. Integral mount is always plumb, no leveling and hyper-durable forged housing and super clear glass -- classic Trijicon. FFP reticle specifically designed to be more usable 1x, horseshoe-ACOG style 1x, but you get MRAD tree for long distance. Weight is the penalty, but that's already the LVPO penalty anyway.

I have a stigmatism, basically the image focuses in two locations in my vision. An emitted light such like a red dot creates a "smear" even close a dot does not appear as a dot but closer to a symbol of a water drop. Day to day and levels of tired changes how active the stigmatism is and if its above or below the main image. The worst I ever noticed was shooting with a dot and the line created from the dot stretched from above to below the target at 100 yards. I missed every shot on that target because I could not figure out where I needed to hold along that line during the course of fire. I have found 3x micro prisms work the best for me.

I’m a red-dot + magnifier fan , I place my rear backup irons in front of red-dot. Yes, lose sight radius length but when all batteries 🪫 fail , irons is better than nothing. I’ve run EoTech, AimPoint, Holosun, Leupold, Bushnell, Sig, Steiner, and others. My personal favorite is the Holosun but dislike it’s battery life. Combined with a BCM Op Mod stock you’ll have plenty of battery storage space. I also op for the longer foregrip with battery compartment for my EoTech build. I think the EoTech has over 20k rounds on it, 9+ years old. Also some more emphasis should be made for the etched reticle of LPVO. If you “trash them” and can no longer zoom leaving set at 1X is still very functional and not a total loss. If power and batteries are not available, etched glass wins. Add 45 deg offset iron sights and leave zero’d at 5X. I’m also a big fan of PCC in 9mm and in which case you could run a more compact dot like a Leupold Delta Point Pro which costs less than an EoTech. Big emphasis for this benefit is your handgun (sidearm) and carbine match optics and magazines & caliber . If your immediate family and friends all get the same red dots and mags you have a tremendous overlap if one system fails for sharing of parts and compatibly. I know enclosed emitters are the big rave but with super bright forward light my DPP runs great. Some of the enclosed units I’ve tested get a weird red halo.

People with astigmatism need LPVOs and prisms. Red dots appear as blurs to us. On LPVOs, replace the extended adjustment handle that changes the power.... with a hose clamp. Those handles break off anyhow. The hose clamp actually works better, won't break, and won't accidentally change your power setting accidentally. I also found the scope lasts longer with the hose clamp in an abusive environment. It's awesome to set the LPVO to 3 or 4 X and still see with both eyes open, especially in the woods when you need and wear corrective lenses. I'm old school. Uncle Sam trained me to hit with irons out to 475 meters and to shoot at night effectively without needing gizmos.
