To my ears the CS sound good, but a bit thin. The CB set has more body and some pretty mojo. Perhaps the hand winding and care Paul takes makes the difference. I’d like to think so. Great playing .

Excellent demonstration from a very good player! Myself, I tend to prefer the CB set, but it's great to hear this side-by-side comparison. So many Strat pickups available at this time over a huge price range... Yes we all know these are different guitars, but you can certainly get a flavour of both these top pickup sets. Thanks!

Both pickups sound great. What’s interesting to me is how you predominantly use your index an middle finger to do hammer on’s and string bends. I see blues guys use their ring finger more than that middle finger. Great playing!

Thanks for this great video! I am thinking about a new Strat project and concerning pickups I will probably choose between Fender custom shop Fat 50th, 69th or these Radioshop Chris Buck. I guess it depends very much on the guitar and the whole setup, including what amplifier and effects you use. Here both sound great, the Fat 50th tend to have a lot more high frequencies., the CB sound warmer. But I probably would still prefer the Fat 50th, because in the mix, or live, they will more cut through and they sound somehow more open over all. Also Fender Custom Shop pickups may have more value in reselling

The two guitars have different tremolo systems, the 2 point pivot also has a tone difference (a little harsher and less lower frequencies) so in my opinion its not only the pickups which make the slightly different more fizzly sound..

Really like your phrasing Nick! Great playing, I think you pulled some great tones out of both sets. I feel like the F50’s are a bit more “polite” to my ear but not in a bad way and the CB set perhaps has a little more sizzle? I’m on a pickup search myself and F50s are on the list to replace Texas Specials. Do you have a couple of favorite low to medium output sets to recommend? Besides the F50s I’m also considering the Fender CS 69s and Pure Vintage 59’s. Neither the 69s nor 59s are reverse wound in the middle position which both concerns me but I also hear it adds volume and snap to the 2 and 4 positions - im a bit torn there. And it’s also challenging because I’m relying mostly on KZitem. Would love to hear your thoughts. Cheers!

@@NickHallGuitarist Nick have you used the fat 50s with tubescreamer type pedals ? I boost a jam tubedreamer with a maxon od808. As my head is the ultra high headroom wampler bravado.......the sound is glorious, and I'm curious about how those pickups gel with mid hump drive pedals.

Great video and both guitars sounded glorious, great playing too. Love the 4th position so hopefully will find some more videos on your channel with the neck/middle position being played. I think anyone would be happy with either set, very very slight difference, my ears aren’t as attuned as others. Love Radioshop pickups and live the fat 50s (and the Josephine hand wound version). I think I heard a little more warmth in the 50s? Loved them both.

The whole vintage strat pickup thing is a bit of a con. Just a wire wrapped around some magnets. Once you've decided that its going to be vintage spec, the magnet type wire and gauge are a given and number of turns has to be within a very narrow set of parameters. At that point, how much variation can there be ? The difference in tone is probably more to do with the guitar neck and body
@NickHallGuitarist
Жыл бұрын
I do not have enough knowledge in the magnet vs winding area to be able to have an informative response 😂 However! As a player that purely goes off the sound, whether marketed as vintage or not wouldn't matter to me as I can say for certain that I have both of these sets of pickups, very luckily, purchased off reviews have actually been great and this comparison was more to highlight the subtle differences between the two. But as you say, a lot of it is in the wood and body of the instrument!

@NickHallGuitarist
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Pascal, thanks for your comment and glad you liked my sound etc. Understand what you are saying on a direct comparison front. I did consider the best way to approach the video but removing and refitting pickups in either one of the guitars is more hassle than its worth and I definitely do not have the time to do this whilst also recording and editing a video. The patches/set up/string make and gauge used whilst playing remain the same on both guitars. I also wanted to highlight how my Mexican Roadhouse performed against a USA top of the range model and believe that the Chris Buck set of pickups is a great upgrade for anyone who wants to get a higher quality sound from their non US Standard model without parting with the money of actually buying one - cheers for the feedback and take care!
