As a Liverpool fan, and someone who remembers this. It was during the season Van Dijk returned from his nasty, season ending injury. So you're right. World Cup 2022 Fuad was blasting Van Dijk crazily especially during Qatar, but also for club.

@@mowalid14 Sure. Chelsea is owned by a consortium, BlueCo. The consortium consists of Clearlake Capital (Eghbali) and other investors such as Todd Boehly. Tensions have arisen between co-owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital with frustrations stemming from a lack of progress on key goals. Clearlake own 62% of Chelsea and are open to buying Boehly and other co-owners shares if they are willing to sell. However, Boehly is also considering getting more investors together to buy the Clearlake share.

There’s nothing wrong with Ivan Toney going to get the bag. But saying he’s not sacrificed a legacy is wild. Hes made the right decision for him but the fact is he’s sacrificed football for it. Also Ivan Toney is not on £20k a week at Brentford- what are these guys smoking 😂😂

Teams have so much access to data and analytics, that there isnt as much of an advantage to be gained by that any more. It looks like teams all set up in the same way to us but there are subtle differences that create the fine margins that the best teams win by. Its not like football has been solved or its dead... its just the current evolution of where we are.
@bexclue3007

Exactly. "System" is just a collective buzzword for everything entailing tactical set ups, patterns of play, collective shape in and out of possession etc. And there is no world in which eleven individuals can beat a collective of eleven players in coherence. 17/18 wasn't the best City team. But they absolutely destroyed the entire league bc they were _so far ahead,_ tactically, that everyone got totally outplayed. And being "tactically ahead" basically meant "having a better, coherent and consistent system". They broke the record for most goals scored in a season by literally scoring goals _systematically_ (like, a billion 6yd box tap-ins) And English football learning from and adapting to Pep has elevated the level, clearly, bc the league isn't completely overwhelmed by City anymore (yes, they are still dominant but the league isn't getting completely overwhelmed and overrun to that degree) and the PL has performed _much_ better in European competitions since he came in compared to the 10 years before (highest UEFA coefficient for years)

@@bexclue3007 Well said. I credit Liverpool as well with bridging that gap early on when it seemed impossible. 7 years on from that season, we see even upper-mid table teams like Brighton and Brentford scoring goals like that. Appreciate you understanding the nuance in the idea of "systems" .

One of the most annoying things for me would be teams opting to prefer inverted wingers. I miss wingers on the outside whipping crosses for the CF to finish. A winger that’s able to go on the outside can open the game up with some individual brilliance even at the cost of sacrificing G/A.

I genuinely think the rest of the prem managers are not seeing how they play right into Pep's hands by playing or rather trying the same way he does. If you play the ball on the ground, you will be tiki taka'd out of it. Literally last season, all it took is one long ball over the top and bobb's your uncle. Thats how Ipswich managed to bag one. Klopp was Pep's biggest tactical opp because he didn't play the exact same as Pep. leave the Pep ball before your job leaves you

It is easy to forget sports data and science was largely mocked 20 years when Big Sam, who Gen Z will largely see as a football dinosaur leaned heavily into it. Likewise health and fitness, when Wenger and Houiller brought their expertise in. Football is ultimately very cycle based. And trends will always dominate.

Not really. The role of the modern striker has changed drastically compared to 20 years ago when even man like Andrew Johnson for Crystal Palace was a ruthless finisher despite them getting relegated. Haaland is very much in the mold of a 90s/00s striker so that is why stylistically he stands out more, especially for Gen Z and X. Like, Klopp and his coaching staff, most of them said Firmino was the most important player in the team. And we all know bar one season really it wasn't for his goals.

Re Toney, of all players gone there, I have less of an issue tbh. Arsenal, Spurs Chelsea and United have been all linked with him over the last 2 years. And none made the move. And it's less likely such teams will make a move at 29 years old. So, fair play to him, I guess. Let's see how long he does actually last out there.

Are you gassing up Walker? Put Walker in Liverpool's high line and a little more chaotic style, with Trent's responsibility of creating, and well... yeah. Give Trent a chance to basically have little to no attacking responsibility other than be the occasional outlet when Mahrez namely was around, and so focus on defending, he'll be more than fine. 1 vs 1 no denying Walker is better. But let's not pretend Trent wouldn't have thrived under Pep neither.
