If you’re so happy with a Chinese guitar maybe you should get a Chinese amp to match it. I’ve been playing Gibsons since the 80’s. For good or bad I’m used to them, I pick them up and it’s an old friend that I recognize. My favorite one is a 74 LP custom that a collector wouldn’t bat an eye at and I’ve played it religiously for the past 30 years. I’m left handed as well, which means there is not much available and I have to make them work because there isn’t another one if I don’t like one. With that I think I’ve learned patience with an instrument whereas when there’s so much available to right handed players they can just throw it out and pick up another one, I can’t. I’ve also learned that every guitar is a few adjustments away from being the best guitar you’ve ever played. I have a custom shop Strat that I’ve owned and hated for years. I finally found the perfect neck adjustment and a few high spots and now it’s my favorite Strat that I’ve ever owned. I also tour, I’ll take a guitar that I’m not that in love with but plays fine across the world with me, by the time I get back, I’m using that guitar a lot more.

I went for a Generic Korean made alnico 5 humbucker-sized P90, premium wiring from 6 String Supplies, Graphtec nut and vintage style white button tuners. Killer little guitar now.

I'm usually a cheap guitar guy, and the Epiphone seems like it would be great for doing Billie Joe-type stuff, but I feel that the sound of the Billie Joe wasn't as open and snarly as the Gibson and Eastman, and it seems to me like it's the pickup. Totally agree about "guitar shop stage fright", but I found a solution that works well for me. Whenever I think I might be in the neighborhood of a guitar shop, I take with me a Fender Mustang Micro and a good pair of earbuds. With a couple of picks, it's very pocketable. Regardless of what you think of the Micro, the setup is at least _the same_ everywhere you go, so you have a baseline to compare to, and nobody needs to hear you play! It has the added benefit of blocking out the other loud guitarists in the shop. 😄 Regarding the choices, I bought the "Inspired by" Epiphone last year and was very happy with it. BUT THEN I made the mistake of picking up a 2004 Gibson Jr. at the local used guitar shop. Plenty of honest "relic-ing" (I wonder how much Tom Murphy would charge for that little chip in the headstock?) and the neck and pickup were just _soooo_ nice. It also had some pretty wood grain showing behind the sunburst. I took it home with me, and now the Epiphone just sits there. One thing I noticed about the Epi vs. the Gibson is how far away from the strings the P90 on my Epi is (~5mm), where the Gibson is only a couple of mm. Seems to me that either they're making up for a difference in pickups or somehow the neck angle just isn't quite right. Don't know!
@theguitaristas
Жыл бұрын
Cheers Fred, great that you got an older Junior I think old guitars are somehow always better and its great when you pick up now that's been well worn in! 🔥 Re pickups it's same with these ones it was a lot lower on the Epiphone, it must be something to do with neck angle I cant see why else that would be? 🤷♂️

I own an Epiphone Jr and love it, but I'm impressed with the Eastman from what I'm hearing, but the price is out of my budget, great video

Another great video Colin! Loving the Eastman content Keep it coming! And might I say, the Les Paul Juniors seem to bring out something in you as you sound great. Can’t wait to watch the next video tonight. Cheers from Brisbane.

Epi is killing it these days. There are so many good choices these days w a good pup and a level fret job a good guitar is easy to find. Im going to pick up a used Ltd EC401 today. The Eastman sounded best going thru the knobs maybe bc of cap wiring? Or the Lollar, to my ears anyway.

Cheers man, yes I think the combo of good parts gave the Eastman the edge. Good luck with the Ltd I still have yet to play one! 🤷♂️

Eastman is no longer using nitro cellulose lacquer. They switched sometime last year around August. They went to some kind of water base.

Great review Colin, I always tell anyone seeking to buy a Gibson try as many as you can. All these guitars sound great to me and the Epi is the one if you're gigging cause it's great bang for your buck, saying that the Eastman is still at the top of my shopping list, it's just quality.....

Choosing a guitar, and finding "the one", is personal, very personal. A guitar that's right for you, can be the opposite for someone else *same instrument". How it sounds, how it feels in your hand, how it plays, in your hands, the way it looks, its version, and who made it, all works to determine that right guitar for you. Personally speaking, I do not like single pick up electric guitars, acoustic guitars with some sort of amplifying devise is different. Still, your comparison of these three guitars is still nice. I heard very little difference in them, so I would save the cash, get the Epiphone and invest in a peddle to kick it up a notch, That's just me. ;-)

For me, the Eastman has the best sound. Also, the most expressive. Glad I am not good enough to play such a guitar. Would be $1500 poorer! Tried one in a guitar shop and it was great.

I believe that the headstock angle on the Epiphone is 14. The Gibson is 17 and the Eastman headstock also looks be the same as the Gibson. Headstock angle will make a difference with tone and of course, tuning issues.

Obviously bias having just picked up the Epiphone. Such a great range of tones. Given the price of the other 2, I could have also walked out the shop with the black Epiphone Les Paul Custom & a considerable amount of change...... only convincing my wife of this being a great deal may have been tricky. The additional acoustic travel guitar was a big enough challenge.

If I'm buying, Epiphone. If someone else, Eastman edges Gibson. They all sound and look fine. No excuse though for the finish on that Gibson, it's just never going to cure. Everything else about these was well said already by others below so that's all for now. Cheers from cold, rainy Dallas! P.S. Caught that sweet Leslie West solo from "Mississippi Queen." Nice. I think he played a Jr. sometimes, right?

Great presentation. You have the wise wizard demeanor, sir. If I'm not on a budget, I'd get the Eastman. If I'm on a budget, I'll pass on that Epi. I'm real picky about whose signature might be on any given guitar. Not so picky about where they're made. Emotion over reason perhaps.

I didn't even have to watch the video to know you'd choose the Eastman. I have an sb59v and just got a Romeo la. I've had one of those sb55 Sunburst juniors on order for quite a while can't wait to finally gets in. Eastman's are the best bang for the buck these days without question. Really enjoy your Channel.

I actually prefer heavy-wood guitars for just the opposite reason: they tend to sound more "focussed" & well-defined (Les Paul Customs vs Standards being a good example of this). ...Anyway, it certainly sounds to me like you got your playin' mojo back this week Col!
