Well, I would say that the keyboard on the T430/T530 is still very good. It's not the old keyboard but it has a unique "premium/business" feeling, which in my opinion isn't tiring at all. The T430/T530/W530 still have the original sturdy build but after those it just goes downhill... I bought my first Thinkpad (T530) about 3 weeks ago and I got a really good deal (about 370€) for the best configuration (i7-3740QM, Nvidia NVS 5400M, 1080p display). This might sound much, but those old Thinkpads are really rare in europe and especially in Austria.

To be entirely fair, the chiclet keyboards on Thinkpads aren't bad for what they are. As far as chiclet keyboards go, Lenovo makes some of the best ones. The real problem I have with modern Thinkpads is how much they're losing their edge over the competition. It used to be that Thinkpads were almost the only option worth considering for a business laptop, because the build quality and design was just that good. Nowadays they're really no better or worse than any other business laptop.

I just recently bought the X260, and it's a pint-sized powerhouse. I've been able to edit music on the go with studio programs on it, and it holds its own. Boot up is fast (10 seconds) , browsing is fast, and for a refurbished $100 laptop, it's a beast. I also recently refurbished an E531, and I'm looking forward to giving it some extra hardware upgrades. I bought it without an HDD for $54, and I installed the SSD and OS, and replaced the battery. Runs almost as fast as the X260, and that's impressive.

Lenovo went to the chicklet style keyboard so they could add back lite keys. Some reviews have stated that these keyboards were not that bad in their feel, but the layout was bad. In any case you can transplant an X220 keyboard into an x230, and a T420 keyboard into a T430. So I would suggest that the X230 and T430 are acceptable machines.

Always was a fan but using them man oh man are they still great machines. Built like a tank, still hold up in performance vs most of todays stuff and obviously what the Thinkpad is known for - the keyboard, being spillproof, being able to use them w/ one hand (with extended battery) but its almost like driving a Jeep YJ vs a newer wrangler. Its old school that still holds it own. Seriously..go buy a thinkpad from 2011-2014 vs something new for a quarter of the price and it will most likely beat it!

Librebooting my t400 was a pain. The bios chip is buried, you have to remove the entire motherboard to access it properly. It's worth it though. I like having the wider screen. I don't know how the t500 fares with librebooting. But my daily workhorse is the x60. Mostly for portability. It's a LOT smaller and lighter than my t400. It's librebooted with an ssd, it's lightning fast. I also have an x60 tablet for note taking purposes but it is a 32 bit cpu. It doesn't make that big of a difference to be honest. It all depends on what you are using it for. Parabola still has 32 bit support but arch doesn't. Both of the x60's were librebooted without taking out a single screw. I recently bought an x201t though. I do a decent amount of audio and video editing and wanted something more powerful. It's mostly a hobby, but it's relatively cheap for "better" performance. I also use it for taking notes in class/anything else. I corebooted it, put in 8g of ram, and gave it an ssd. I only connect it to the internet for updates. That's the only way I get peace of mind. It will never be completely free, but this is the closest I'll ever get. I plan on removing the wifi-card sometime this week so that the ethernet port is the only access point to the internet. I'm assuming it will work but have yet to test it.

I just purchased a t430; i agree with you about the t420/x220 being the last real good one in stock configuration, but if you're planning on doing mods, t430 seems more suitable. I'm gonna throw in an i7 quad core, a t420 keyboard, likely an IPS screen with an FHD IPS mod, and will use 1vyrain software to disable Intel Management and allow for custom BIOS flashing (along with other goodies like overclocking and such). Granted by the end I'll have spent probably as much as getting a fairly modern laptop, but it's gonna be a durable workhorse and have the old keyboard anyway. I'll likely grab an x220 and maybe an x200 as well if I find them cheap enough so I can have some beaters to mess around with, but the t430 is definitely solid if you want to do some diy modding.

T is for "Thin" and X is for "Xtra portable". there is also a bit better price for the money. the W series, "workstation". for $400 used, you get i7 4xxxM series (not U, but M), ssd, at east 8 gb Ram (i've seen more 16 than 8), fingerprint and have optical drive. oh and it's IPS display with 1080 resolution. having optical drive is not necessary but a blessing if you can get one. because you can always swap the optical drive for ssd/hdd. i bought T420 for $200. i5-2420m, 2nd gpu Nvidia nvs5200, ssd 128 gb, 8 gb ram. then i replaced the optical drive with 1 tb hdd and upgrade the ram to 16 gb. it was my main gear for 3 years for using After effect. it is perfectly fine both after and before the upgrade. if you are looking to buy one, buy used W series, or T series with 2nd gpu (rare but waaaay better). never buy the X series (both with and without tablet mode. exact same as T series, without optical drive for the exact same price (at least here)

From the 530 on, , they had the island/chicklet keyboards, which are worse. the 540 was especially bad. W series models have an accelerated Nvidia graphics card built in, in addition to the standard Intel graphics. The Nvidia card is used automatically when 3d or fast graphics are needed.

Wish I would have done my research before I bought my x230. Hopefully one day they will figure out how to libreboot it. I think the reason they switched to another keyboard design was to enable backlit keyboard, none the less I have seen people modify thinkpads to have the classic thinkpad keyboard.

the t430 is the last t series with a good keyboard. yes, it is a chiclet keyboard, but this feels similar to the pld keyboards. and different to other keyboards. this is because they didnt change the keyboard much. the t440 properly changes the keyboard

Inchage? So the X200 and the T400 are the ones that can use Libreboot and the rest are Coreboot.. and the T400 is the same as the x200 but with a bigger display?

I really hate how their keyboards are laid out though. The reversal of the Fn and Ctrl keys really gets me because I'm used to Ctrl being in the bottom left of the keyboard and it takes several extra seconds to enter keyboard shortcuts. Then a lot of them also have the function keys redirected to Fn+F1-12 while volume control and stuff are the primary function of the buttons. Overall it's just hard to use, and you can't even fix it without cracking open the hardware either since the Fn key's functionality is hardwired into the keyboard.

I have t420 with an i7 2620m. To my surprise when I checked out the user benchmark website, a modern i5 7200u or 7300u ultrabook processor is only 20%-30% faster. WTF

I have a 14 year old R51 made by IBM and it is still kicking. The only thing going on it is the battery. I am looking to get a new one for about 20 dollars and maybe maxing out the RAM. I think I paid $40 for the laptop. A comparison of quality. The R series was IBMs budget and small business line a decade ago and the build quality is better then the Lenovo Thinkpad Edge which is Lenovo's equivalent line. I have and like my E545 but I doubt it will hold up 14 years.

I have used the x230 for almost a year now and I had absolutely no problems with it. Just recently, I replaced the charger and the new one didn't work that well so the board got fried. I have taken it for repairs and they offered me the t410 as replacement for now. I only came here to see the reviews to know what to decide. I do a bit of graphics design on Figma .nd photoshop, and a bit of coding too. I also do a bit of AutoCAD every now and then. Apart from that, nothing else. Would anyone recommend taking the t410?

I have both a t430 and t420. While I am a Dell guy, I love my Latitude series. But there's no denying these vintage are very well built. I call them my tiny tanks:) But, I've been thinking of replacing my bios on my t420 since it only has the intel graphics and while I have my Windows 7 recovery set, I enjoy Linux on these laptops. They work completely out of box, and we have docks.

I have a T410 which I also bought used at a great price. Upgraded the RAM from 2GB to 4GB and bought a brand new SSD (with DRAM folks, very important). It has an i5 CPU and boots extremely fast. Like a new computer. And I can confirm that the new models are made very, very cheap. My colleague just got one and I couldn't believe how cheap it looks at feels. It looks like a basic entry level laptop that you would pay $300-$400 for, yet it cost over $1500. Yes, it's nice and thin and easy to carry. But the materials used are atrocious considering the price.

To be honest, im using an x230 model, with its original keyboard. At first, it felt kinda slipery in comparison with traditional keyboards. But i got used to it, and can't really complain anymore. Still, the newer thinkpads, from t440 and x240, I didn't like the new touchpad, although they have nvme connectors for fast SSD. Still, i love my x230, pretty much the best laptop i ever bought, it was like 70$ on ebay used

Well, actually the ThinkPad chiclet keyboard is far superior to the MacBook KBs. They are really comfortable to type on. If you want a more modern experience go with the xx40 or xx50 line. They have high res displays and modern amenities such as 4g. Also, the batteries are much younger and some of them are being made with quality standards. My daily casual is an X1c 3rd gen and my "workhorse" is a T540p with the T550 trackpad (the xx40 gen has a terrible solution for the TrackPoint buttons.

I have a t450s and its quality is simply superb. Personally, its keyboard is not as bad you displayed in the video or maybe the way you made it seem like. Actually, I find its keyboard amazing. The build quality is another aspect that`s on the positive side. So I guess if there is someone out there looking for a thinkpad, sadly will definitely have a wrong idea or maybe kind of a mistaken standpoint to a certain extent. All in all, good deal on the machines and thinkpad is awesome. Thanks for sharing your point of view.

I have a T400 that was dirt cheap off ebay. I installed 8GB RAM and upgraded the CPU from Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 (2.4GHz) to the P9900 (3.0GHz). I haven't done any benchmarking comparisons (which I could do as I still have the old CPU) but that extra .6GHz does seem to make a real difference. The extra RAM didn't make as much difference as I was expecting, I think this machine would be just fine with 4GB. The screen is pretty good, nice and crisp and unlike earlier Thinkpads its BRIGHT, but it is only 720p and the colours are pretty weak and washed out (if there is a way to improve this through software I'd love to hear); it's not the sort of thing you would notice until comparing with a nicer more vivid screen but this is not a laptop for graphic design.

I also bought a couple of ultrabay things (the slot that is usually populated by a DVD drive but can be swapped out for other modules): an ultrabay battery (no slice battery available for the T400 afaik) and an ultrabay caddy for a second hard drive. I love the modularity of Thinkpads and it's fun to just collect this crap and try it out and experiment as it's all fairly cheap now.

I have 4 Thinkpads altogether, 2 are T520. Love them both from the keyboard, the build quality, the keyboard and the light that comes down from the camera area to illuminate the keyboard. I will admit that I am running Linux on both and the run amazingly. Planning on upgrading both to i7 and ssd.

I bought an i7 to replace the i5 ln my T520 (Which has the nvidea and higher res. screen) because I had read it has the bigger i7 cooling and when I compared the specs, my lower end i7 isn't any faster than my top end i5. I'll just keep the i7 for a rainy day. I needed a laptop with the DVD drive (which I swap out for a 2nd storage 1TB hard drive when I'm not using it.) I'm still using a copy of photo shop 8 installed on DVD. SSD for the boot drive would be a lot quicker start up.

Personally, I have a few thinkpads some old and one newish. The newish one is a t450s. It is appreciably more poorly built, in fact the side chipped away near the USB port from BEING SET DOWN WHILE IN MY BAG, but the keyboard. The keyboard travel and feel is probably the best I have ever used on any computer. The functionality buttons are not there but the feel of the ones that are there is really something to experience
