A local guy here has land laid out much like yours. An east/west valley between a pair of mountains on the north and south sides. He runs goats in a bunch of small pastures on his hillsides. What he did was run a direct burial cable up his valley with a subsoiler on his tractor along the edge of his valley road. Every 100' or so it comes to the surface and he covers where it surfaces with buckets and barrels and other types of covers. The pastures he sets up through his woods always have a line near the road through the valley, so he connects whatever pasture he is setting up back to that main line for power. He's ran four small pastures off of a single AC charger many times without issue. The direct burial cable has been in the ground for about 15 years and has had no issue.

Those are some good questions and thoughts. I am preparing for my first set (2-3) feeder pigs on my homestead in Liberia. My plan is to rotate them through a mix of woods and dense bush. For simplicity, I brought over a solar fence charger and a few rolls of poly wire. Now that I am living on the land and have solar power for my house, I wonder if I shouldn’t have brought over an AC/DC charger instead. For you, it seems like the dual power option is tour best choice. It’s an investment, but when you take care of good quality batteries, they have the potential to serve you for many years. By the way, I love the Pastured Pig Podcast. Lots of wisdom!

Your video here is timely for us! We are expecting our first piglets this weekend and will eventually turn them out to till our pasture. I'm sure our neighbors won't want them swimming in their in-ground pool! Come to think of it, these will be your god-piglets! We learned the AI technique from your video! I'll include your link when I post a video of them...if all goes well. Thanks for all of the great info you always provide!

I had a 15 joule galliger plug in charger. Our farm was 26 ares. I had a hot wire that topped the stone wall all the way around our land. I could always get a charge from any boundary. I always liked to test for over 9,000. I had pigs, sheep and cattle. Geese for one year. I had a light on the fence that blinked. When it got dark I could see from the dinner table if I had a hot fence. My charger was $235.00 They replaced it once. (Lightening)

Buy u another charger and energize that north pasture and use a jumper . The plus side to that is u will a back up charger in the case one would happen to quit working

What LPC Farm says seems to make the most sense. It is a one-time investment for many years of use. You would have a convenient power source further into your property for anything you might want or need. Unless you really want to carry and change batteries in the winter? Everyone has different definitions of fun. Of course, its your time and money; I will shut up now.

Avoid solar, I've had several good name brands without much luck. I strictly use AC, I like your idea of just jumping off your north pasture.

I think I would run a separate feed using the same connection points for the N pasture (separate insulators)this would isolate the boar pasture and allow easier troubleshooting in case deer or whatever took out your wire you would only have to check the boar pasture and not the N pasture as well. just my humble opinion.

Hey Troy hey Kelly I’ve run into some of the same problems what I found easiest was to run a wire from my AC charger to whatever section I need energize wire is cheap and you’re not investing in batteries chargers solar anyway that’s my two cents on it it’s always worked for us have a good and blessed day and stay safe and healthy

I would defiantly bring all them together in the winter or at least close because of the weather , Ease of operation water feed etc. how about a 12 volt system with a solar back up or trickle to it ?

There is very good solar now so with that and a decent battery pack you can go days with low light. Build a insulated Lil battery house.

Energize the north pasture or at least part of it so you can get power it to the bore pen. You don’t necessarily have to tower the whole thing. Get a second charger if you want. A second one is always handy

Our system last summer (For cows and sheep, rather than pigs, but I don't see why it wouldn't work for piggies-probably not in the woods though, it's really an open pasture system) combined all three: it's a dual AC/DC system with a small solar panel we bought separately, which charges the battery. It's only 7 joules, but as we only use it for a movable fenceline ( a mix of 3-strand polywire and sheep net) which encloses about an acre, it works quite well: last summer we never had to bring the battery in for charging, the solar panel kept it charged- of course our 18-19 hour days in the summer probably helped, but even in the autumn, we never ran out of juice. For your situation, what about setting switches on the top wire of the north pasture fence, so that you could have a single hot wire there, out to the boar pasture, without having to energize the entire perimeter? Then you'd only have one line to troubleshoot most of the time, but if and when you want to use the north pasture, you just close the switches and the rest of the fence comes online.

I'd run electric wire up there. At some point you may need it. tack it to the trees at 8 feet, use a plug in end and spool of heavier wire.

Those youngens at the beginning are saying where is the food buddy. Just like teenage boys always hungry. Lol Troy I would definitely use the North pasture fence to energize your bore pasture. However you wouldn't need to energize the whole north pasture just separate off what's not needed and reconnect when you do. This way you don't have to try and maintain the whole thing. You wouldn't then be energizing portions of the fence your not using or need at the time.

Hear one that I bet no one thought of. This is what happens to a 67-year-old who likes good youtube channels. My body does not like me some days so I find content that I like and I get hooked. No, I'll never raise pigs, can't eat pork. Dog collars for use on pigs, of course, I'm guessing your new pigs will not get the size of Maradith. You bury the line, by doing so you avoid line damage from other animals or branches that short out the lines. Ya, it's more work putting it in but when your done I'm guessing you don't have to play with it anymore. Do they make a solar, AC, and battery energizer? You only need one unit and you're covered if you lose power by the batteries and the solar.

Don't overlook the power source that you're standing in. I'm talking about that stream you could harness with a small Microhydro system and a length of plastic pipe. I don't know if he still makes it now or not, but Paul Cunningham of Energy Systems and Design used to make a very small (nano?) hydropower unit for a couple hundred dollars that would charge your 12 volt battery. I seem to remember he called it the baby or something like that.

Just checked his website at Microhydropower.com and found the water baby model has been replaced by the watter buddy model. I guess it has a 2 inch pitch turbine on it, like I said very small.
