Yet, Rivendell wielded more "soft power" than any other kingdom. It's influence was from Lindon to mirkwood to gondor. Elves, men and dwarves all respected and heeded Rivendell. It was genius how Tolkien portrayed it. The smallest elven realm had the most effect.

Not only on Sindarin, but also how it initiated his interest in language which eventually led to LOTR? There's a lot revealing stuff in his 1955 lecture "English and Welsh" which is available online. No judgement, we all make mistakes... But I think the sound editing was off in this video. Specifically, when you're talking about the Witch King of Angmar early on in the video, the soundbite of Eowyn killing him from the movies plays, and then a minute or two later when you mentioned the prophecy of his death and how it plays out, you show the clip of her killing him, which is silent other than the ambient music of the video itself. So, not sure if that's an easy edit to fix it or if it's not worth the time/effort, but I figured I'd mention it. As always, I love all the content, the videos you guys create are incredible. The race of Men was by far the strongest, except maybe the Orcs. Rohan can raise 12000 horsemen, Gondor could raise 20000-30000, Umbar's fleet numbered over 200 ships, so likely in the tens of thousands, and the Haradrim and Easterlings can likely also raise armies of a similar number, not to mention the Kingdom of Dale, which could raise a few thousand strong army probably. Orc numbers are hard to say, but given how there were ten thousand from Isengard, and maybe 30000-50000 at Minas Tirith(depends on how large a percentage of that army was Haradrim), and over 100000 at the Black Gates, plus tens of thousands were launched from Dol Guldur against Lothlorien and Mirkwood. So well over 100000 for Men, and at least 200000 for the Orcs, though these would be of far lesser quality. The Elves don't even come close. Rivendell only seems to have a few hundred residents, and the most populated of the Elven realms, Mirkwood, I would say up to ten thousand, but probably less, leaving Lindon and Lothlorien probably in the low thousands. I would say there's 15000-20000 elves in Middle Earth during the Lord of the Rings. The Dwarves are a bit better, because while there were only thousands in Erebor, probably less than ten thousand, the eastern Dwarves and The Dwarves of the Blue Mountains are so obscure that it is practically impossible to tell how much dwarves are there. Maybe they are all like Erebor, or there are literally millions of them and they are about to overrun Middle Earth. But since Erebor was one of the stronger Dwarven realms of the time, I'm leaning more towards the former. But the deal breaker her is that unlike those of the other races, the mannish realms only have a small portion of the population at arms, meaning they could replenish their losses far better and faster than the others, even the Orcs.

@cjtrules1

I don't know how this could be a tough question to answer for anyone who at least watched the LOTR trilogy. Third Age is called Age of Men for a reason. Dwarves couldn't help the Men of the West much since all seven houses were involved in the War of Dwarves and Orcs earlier in the Third Age and suffered huge losses. 4 of the houses lived in the far east so they would be closest to the Easterlings of Rhûn, but we don't hear about them at all. 2 other houses lived in the Blue Mountains which were in the far west of Eriador. These 6 houses were nowhere close to the Realms of Men and were probably too weak anyways. The only Dwarven stronghold that was close to Gondor and Rohan was the Longbeard's in the Misty Mountains but we all know they fled Khazad-dûm because of Durin's Bane. With that the closest stronghold for the Longbeard's was Erebor which was in the north of Rhovanion and east of Mirkwood, so it was still very far away. Even if they wanted to help the Men of the West Erebor became occupied by fighting the Easterlings.

I thought this was going to be about who were the strongest fighters, like individually. As a group, men fielded the largest and strongest armies by the beginning of the 4th age. Individually, I'd say the top tier remaining elves were the strongest fighters, with maybe the sole exception of Aragorn. Elrond and his closest companions would have seen many centuries of fighting, thousands of year to hone combat skills, not to mention the inherent quasi-magic buffs and wisdom, especially the Noldor left around. I think if it was a battle royal between a group of the dozen top fighters from each race, the Elves would win, though if it was total armies facing off the Men would have the advantage.

My guess before watching the video: I suppose that would be the orcs, or really all of Saurons peoples, seeing as they would have won the war of the ring if not for Frodo, Sam and Gollum. Even after losing the seige of Minas Tirith, the forces of the orcs and evil men were still more than enough to crush the last Gondorians and Rohirrim. If I can only pick one race specifically, and not the Alliance of people that worked for Sauron, I would still guess the orcs, considering their sheer numbers. After wathing the video: At first I resoned that men were not the strongest by themselves due to the fact that they neded the valour of all the free peoples to defeat Sauron, but i did not think about the fact that the men serving Sauron still count as men. I suppose that in the event of evil winning it is possible that Sauron would have ectually replaced his orcs with his human servants, after all, humans are far more orderly and reliable than the orcs of middle earth. In that case Saurons victory would still bring about the age of men, although mankind would be the slaves of the dark lord. With that in mind I do belive that Tolkiens men would win in a battle royale between the races of middle earth, if we assume that the westerners, southrons and easterlings all team up, they would have so many diffrent strenghts, and I suppose its possible they would outnumber the orcs. I doubt the elves and dwarves would stand much of a chance, they would be to few in number, the dwarves of Erebor nearly lost against the easterlings, and they were allied with the men of Dale. They elves would have some powerful fighters, but again, there were so few of them, and I don't think the couple of elves who were really strong, like Galadriel or Thranduil, would be enough to make a diffrence.

"strongest" is also subjective. Even during the War of the Ring, the race of Men were stronger than the orcs despite the orcs being a larger force. If we are also going with ALL Men of Middle-Earth like you were saying with the Southrons, Easterlings, and Men of the West then they absolutely blow orcs out of the water with their numbers as well. Remember orcs are not smart. None of them were commanders of the various orc armies. The orc armies are all led by The Nazgûl. The one orc lieutenant in the movies, Gothmog isn't even confirmed to be an orc in the books and was 2nd in command under the Witch-King. This favors Men greatly since they are well organized, trained, and had great leadership.

I think the Maiar were the strongest, despite their small number. Without Sauron, none of the wars would have been necessary. Without Saruman, the others might have defeated Sauron much earlier. Without Gandalf, they wouldn't have defeated him at all. And the balrog actually took out Gandalf before he got his special dispensation. Honestly, since Illuvatar was going to intervene anyway (by sending Gandalf back), he may as well have intervened by taking all the Maiar, including the balrogs, Sauron and the wizards, OUT of Middle Earth and saving everyone much heartache (as well as the entirety of the plot 😃).
@Count.Saruman
Жыл бұрын
That's a faulty analysis. The Free Peoples needed to defeat Sauron for themselves and overcome his darkness. That was the price Men needed to pay to become masters of the world (save Aman). It's quoted all the way back in the Ainulindalë, by Ilúvatar himself- "And thou, Melkor, shalt see that no theme may be played that hath not its uttermost source in me, nor can any alter the music in my despite. For he that attempteth this shall prove but mine instrument in the devising of things more wonderful, which he himself hath not imagined." Evil needed to exist in the world for there to be such a thing as 'good'. Adversity needed to exist for the sake of betterment. If Ilúvatar had simply resolved the Free People's problems, they would have turned out far worse- weak, and reliant on powers other than their own wills. And without the vast majority of good maiar such as Gandalf, the peoples of the world wouldn't have had the opportunity to overcome their tyrants and oppressors. Both the good and the evil maiar- as well as every single Ainu spirit, including Melkor- had their purpose within Eä.

There's still the "Melkor's ring" evil embedded in Middle Earth, and Melkor has to be dealt with eventually -- but by Illuvatar and/or the Valar, not by those who live in Middle Earth. Middle Earth would be so much better off. To me all that stuff about how these people need evil (to have something to fight against for the sake of developing their characters) is just post-hoc rationalization for the fact that in the real world, evil happens without a good reason. But you're of course welcome to your own opinion. And of course you're right that your opinion matches the canon -- Tolkien was a Christian.
