I'm currently playing Breath of the Wild as my first full Zelda experience right now. I'm having an absolute blast exploring and adventuring around Hyrule, and I'm really want to get Age of Calamity and Tears of the Kingdom eventually! I do agree with your point that older Zelda games aren't as expansive as BOTW, and I'm probably going to stick to playing Zelda games that have more exploration, like Wind Waker and Ocarina of Time, as the fantasy immersion is one of my favorite parts of the franchise so far. This was an awesome first KZitem video! I can tell you put a lot of hard work into your list. Have a like! :)

My gf started playing Zelda. I gave her the Minish cap first. 3D would surely be too big of a gap for actual playing (complexity of movement and camera). But the biggest reason was, that it's the most adorable (at least that was what I thought she would think.) We played it at the same time and had an awesome time. I was right . . . She loved it exactly because of how it looked. (Basically, I would say; try to know the person who you're suggesting it to and fit it to their needs.)

Hey hey hey, Link’s Awakening is my personal favourite! It’s not a meh title at all! It’s also the first one I played, but that’s not why I love it. The story, the gameplay, the trading mechanic, it’s simplified and streamlined A Link to the Past / Hyrule Fantasy world space, it’s just utterly perfect. And the remake is gorgeous. And Cagiva Ataru’s manga is as heart-wrenching as the game and its music. But maybe I’m not a good sample audience - my next faves are the newest two mainline titles, and then coming in #4 for me is Zelda II. >_>

Link's Awakening is just constantly telling the player "no." Tons of backtracking, and little freedom to explore. For this hypothetical friend, I'd recommend Link Between Worlds. It has enough of the BotW freedom, but without the controls/systems overhead that a new player would find daunting. Plus it has the densest world and best puzzles on average. It respects your time in a way that the 90s Zeldas did not. Minish Cap got eliminated far too early from this list. It's breezy. The compact little world really respects your time (as long as you're not trying to 100% the game). Having recently played Minish, Awakening, Waker, Breath, and Tears, I'd confidently hand my friend a 3DS with Minish Cap over any of these alternatives. I 100%ed Twilight. It's pretty good.. It's no Link Between Worlds. Truly, the top-down interface lets the 2D Zeldas flow in a way that 3D never has.

I'd say Ocarina of Time. Although my favorite is Twilight Princess, OoT is such a good starting point. It teaches the basics of almost all Zelda games (apart from BotW and TotK) in an excellent way and apart from its graphics (which isn't an issue on the 3DS version) I'd say it aged like a fine wine.
@chrisdaily2077

I also find Ocarina of Time to be a perfect middleground story wise as four games act as sequels to it and three of those games are all the basically inspired by Ocarina gameplay wise (with the fourth being the inspiration for Ocarina). Though my favorite game is Wind Waker.

I'm playing OoT as my second Zelda, after ALBW and it feels SO dated. I understand that it's a product of its time and revolutionary for its time but it's: a) insanely slow b) confusing and all the 3DS QoL does NOT do a good job c) has worthless and time consuming mini games that you feel forced into for character progression (usually heart pieces). fuck fishing in this game, it's insanely stupid d) virtually requires a walkthrough to have even a DECENT experience e) worst offender is incessant backtracking. epona is completely worthless by the time you get it since it doesn't follow your teleport location, it just stays where you last left it. OoT has aged like fine MILK and people absolutely can't see it without rose tinted glasses. Play a new Zelda if you want a somewhat modern experience.

@@ivankrizanic507 Well, I do understand your perspective but I played it 2 years ago, not when it came out. I still enjoyed it so much it became one of my favorite games. I hate this "nostalgia blah blah" argument. If you don't like the game, fine. Just don't pretend like no one can enjoy just because you didn't like it. I didn't get some of your arguments as well. Like I can see why you disliked the backtracking and the game's a bit slow at the beginning (though I think epona helps out a TON and it TELEPORTS to your location if you play the epona song) but I don't think the game requires a walkthrough, there are plenty of hints throught the game to help you. You also said the game requires you to do mini games... It doesn't. When I first played the game, do you wanna know which side quests or mini games did I played? None of them. I just beat the game with hearts that the dungeons gave me. So I really don't understand your points, most of them are nonexistent and the ones that do exist aren't that bad in my opinion. Also, if you want my reasons to why I love this game so much, here's a few: -Excellent dungeon design: Apart from the water temple (and even that isn't that bad), every dungeon in this game is designed masterfully. Modern games like BOTW and TOTK don't even come close to this regard. -Excellent music: To this day, OoT has one of the best soundtracks of all time. Whether it's the atmospheric dungeon music or the goofy tunes of Goron City, they're all some of the most iconic tunes in all of gaming. -Great combat system: This game's combat system was so good, Dark Souls and almost every popular action rpg copied it. Although a little too easy, it's still very fun. Thank you for reading btw.

I'd go Ocarina for a few reasons: 1. It does the best job of easing you in to the game. The early dungeons are relatively simple but do a great job of teaching the basics yet still have cool mechanics along with amazing visuals and music. WW starts you with the weird forsaken fortress and TP makes you play so long as a wolf before even getting to the first dungeon. The later dungeons also are a step up from the later 3D games in terms of difficulty which to me makes the game a little more exciting as you get more a sense of accomplishment 2. It sits central in the story. MM, TP, and WW are somehow all direct sequels that reference OoT and being familiar with Ocarina lets you spot a bunch of easter eggs. I guess the story kinda references ALTTP but very loosely so it stands on its own unlike some later titles 3. Its iconic. The story is classic and introduces the player to Link, Zelda, Ganondorf, the Gorons, Zoras and everything that people know the series for. The music is the best of the series, the dungeons are all incredible in their own right, it establishes the 3D hyrule map, its everything you think of when you think Zelda 4. Its accessible. You can play on N64, Gamecube, Wii, 3DS, and I think the Switch(?) My runner up would probably be A Link Between World for the same reasons in the video. Everything great about A Link to the Past but remastered and way more playable

A couple years ago I would have gone for A Link To The Past, which was my first and still very much holds its own. However nowadays I think I'd recommend Link's Awakening (Switch remake) as first. Now for your main candidates: Twilight Princess is great, but IIRC it had a bit of a "slow start" problem. A Link Between Worlds is an odd beast for me. Is it a sequel to ALTTP, or more like a remake? Bit of both? I think if you play this one before ALTTP, you might be missing out on some part of it. PS: I wouldn't pick Phantom Hourglass for a bunch of reasons, but the mutliple visits to the Temple of the Ocean King during the main quest are not among them: Since each new item opens shortcuts, each of *these* visits to the Temple feels different. Unlike the other *dozens* of visits you do in the postgame, once a day, to grind for boat part completion.

It pains me to say it, but you made the wise choice with Wind Waker. Everything is great EXCEPT the sailing. If you want to make your newbie friend happy, I've found the best way is to ask qualifying questions. Do they more often enjoy 2D or 3D? Dark/cheerful? Structured/open-ended? Story/gameplay? Long/short? Easy/hard? No single Zelda game can be the best starting point for everyone. Having a best overall 1st Zelda can work as a blind recommendation, but about ⅓ to ½ of those listening will probably enjoy a different starting point more. ❤️

First one I played was the original back in 1988. My favorite Zelda game is OoT, but as to which game I recommend is dependent on the person. If they want to play a more linear and story driven game and prefer 3D gameplay over 2D, I'd recommend OoT, TP, SS or WW. OoT if they don't mind older graphics, TP if they want a darker and edgier story, SS if they have a wii with a motion plus controller and want to play the games in timeline order, and WW if they're young and just want a more fun and innocent experience. If they don't want to play something old and are into more modern and open world style games, I'd recommend BOTW as it's a good entry for new players that doesn't require any knowledge of the other zelda games. If they want to play a more classic 2D style zelda game I'd recommend LttP, as it's accessible, has a great story and puzzles that set the groundwork for all zelda games going forward, and you don't have to know much about any of the zelda games to understand the story. But if they want to see where it all started, I'd recommend the original.

Despite the points you brought up about it, I would personally give this one to Skyward Sword... the game's motion controls can be quite tedious at times, but the upside to them is that they're simple to pick up-- it quite literally emulates real life swordplay, no need to learn special inputs on anything. Furthermore, the game's got some of the best dungeons and locations in the series, and one of if not the best stories out of the games. The main complaint I see behind the game is that it's far more linear than other Zelda games, however I feel like that also plays to it's strengths-- because the game is more of a straight-shot story, it has room for more climactic and memorable moments. Don't get me wrong, the open-world titles still have memorable moments, however they're so much more hand-crafted in this game since the developers don't have to worry about the player experiencing something too early or too late.

Very good choice. Twilight Princess has a great story and most of the game is so much fun, even just exploring and doing sidequests. I only dislike some of the wolf bug gathering segments but only slightly. It's far better than some of Majora's masks quests or even wind waker's Triforce chart segment. Mainly because it's straight forward. The Remaster made it less obnoxious too. Also it not being on the Wii is a huge plus cause you don't need to waggle the remote around and change batteries every so often.

Been living my entire life since the original came out hearing nothing but its praises as a classic. But this is, like, the third time in the past year I’ve been hearing people say that the game is under-appreciated and I’m wondering when did this change and in what circles did it change in. Though it was the first Zelda game I ever tried. But my official first was Oracle of Ages and Seasons like a year later. That being said, Phantom Hourglass is *clearly* a direct sequel to Wind Waker, and Spirit Tracks is *clearly* a direct sequel to Phantom Hourglass. Controlling PH and ST is much like controlling a contemporary cellular telephone. While Wind Waker is a sequel to Ocarina of Time, the story doesn't have the same characters, other than Ganondorf. The story is easy to follow throughout the adult timeline. It's not that way in the rest of the LoZ series.

I think Link to the Past with a walk through guide is the definitive start. The rough edges in LTTP is easily rounded over with a simple walk through. Nintendo expected these early SNES games to be experienced with Nintendo Power or the official walk through. You won't always need it but it was a much different experience from when I first rented to when I owned it and could sit down and take in the written material as well as the video game itself. Also as far as the original I think it gets a lot of hate because most people play it without the instruction booklet. It explains a lot and will show you where the first dungeon is! Without this information you really are making the game a lot harder then the developers meant it to be.

Funnily enough the Switch has a huge number of Zelda games, but most of my top starters are missing from the console! If you want to start with 2D the Link’s Awakening remake is the best/most accessible game available; for 3D I’d say it’s a personal call between Ocarina of Time and Skyward Sword, depending on whether you have a higher tolerance for older and more obtuse game design or slightly wonky controls adapted from the wii-mote. Tbh I don’t think SS deserves the majority of the hate it gets from the fanbase, and it’s actually got some really cool dungeons. As a side note BOTW is definitely an excellent game and absolutely could be played first, but like I mentioned in the video it’s not really the most representative of the previous games. Hope this helps!

I think Twilight Princess has the most boring opening. I know people who quit playing before getting to the first dungeon in that game. While I agree with you that it's an amazing entry, I personally feel Ocarina of Time 3D's pacing and smaller world size overall makes for a perfect first Zelda game. As much as I hate it, the Gossip Stone helps they added to the 3DS version would really be useful for a relatively non-gamer. They are there if you want to use them, and easy to ignore if you don't. I think the story of Ocarina of Time is also so crucial to the bigger lore that experiencing it first lays a great foundation for the world building of just about any other entry. With a total gameplay of approximately 15-20 hours any relatively non-gamer person would be able to finish Ocarina of Time. And for someone's first entry, I think that's a lot less daunting than Twilight Princess's 40-55 hours to completion. I think it was Miyamoto or Aonuma who once said Link's Awakening was a great first Zelda game to play

I agree with OoT setting a good foundation for the lore that is referenced in later games. For that reason especially, but also for the others you described, OoT would also be my choice as a good starting point to get into the series.

I think wind waker would be a great starting point, if it didn’t heavily rely on ocarina of time for its backstory. You would be lost if you didn’t play ocarina first.

A Link to the Past is a the correct answer to this question. The play controls and camera function for OoT are seriously lacking. If you really want to start on a 3D title, just go straight to the top and pick BotW.

The first Zelda game I've ever finished is Wind Waker. I got it for free on WIi U because of a promo with Mario Kart 8. It was so good but I had to depend on guides a lot.

In my opinion I'm just gonna say that playimg OOT first will dramatically enhance both Majora's and Twiliggt Princess experiences. So yeah I would say Ocarina first.

Unfortunately you would officially need an older console for each of those games since they haven’t been brought forward to the current generation (assuming you aren’t resorting to emulation which I officially do not endorse).

Not to take away from your experience with playing Zelda, but my first Zelda title is The Adventures of Link and I am 38 right now. With that being said I will discredit your opinion as in 2023 going on to 2024 it is important not to short sell the person who is playing The Legend of Zelda for the first time. Chances are that they have experiences playing other action RPG titles or action platformer games. With that being said if you are a DnD fan I will absolutely shove The Adventures of Link in your face because I feel someone will genuinely still appreciate the rest of the games in the series based of that game and move the directly to Ocarina of Time and back to A Link to the Past and my reason that these 3 Zelda titles share a lot of things in common that will bring them back to the original first title The Legend of Zelda. If you have never played DnD and just getting started with adventure games and RPGs I will have you start with Ocarina of Time because that game is gentle to anyone and was the best introduction to 3D Zelda titles and I would move them onto A Link to the Past because to understand the lore you really need to start there because Ocarina of Time and A Link to the Past both play off of each other really well and is a good way to get stuck with the story. That begs the question at this point: Who is the expert in The Legend of Zelda series? It's always going to be the first person that introduced you to the series and if you don't have that person congratulate yourself because you get to teach future generations about this awesome series.

Just start with any game you will understand it all because the stories are not much connected or in some cases connected at all and other than that if you play the game then you will understand the mechanics either you are already familiar with the franchise or not.

Links awakening is my fav. Had the original but someone stole it and I got the DX version of it a year after that happened for my birthday and I was really happy because I never got to finish that game or Pokemon Red cause someone stole that too and I got Blue and Yellow for Xmas. I remember getting the Gamepro magazine in the store that was all about handheld games and it had a guide for Links Awakening DX. I had Tips N' Tricks, EGM, Gamepro, Nintendo Power and PSM subscriptions cause I would ask for them from family members for Xmas and Birthdays so I had all the guides. Childhood was awesome :')

Link’ Awakening is a great start. It has a great base, then Link to the past on snes, then OoT. I feel the more recent Botw and Totk are too far off and are their own things.

It depends on the experience of the player tbh. Is he/she a gamer? If so, id probably recommend the most recent zelda games and go down from there since most zeldas up to twilight princess can be somewhat outdated in gameplay accessibility and the jank could detract players who are used to play polished and control standardized games like souls games, horizon, ghosts of tsushuma, god of war, etc. That said, if the player is your absolute 0 experience on gaming or just starting to get the grasp of it girlfriend id say the easiest games to get into because of hand holding and not too complicated camera controls or puzzles would probably be skyward sword. She would still need help and guidance, but i think that one is the easiest zelda to get into gaming in general

The first zelda game Ive played was the original OG on the old nintedo. However, that isnt the game i would recomend. The 4 games I would recomend. 1. Ocerina of Time. 2. Link to the past 3. Wind Waker 4. Breath of the Wild (even though I havent played it yet) These 4 games shows almost all gameplay variations that zelda has.

Great video. But I dissagree with ur final choice. Only because TP has such a long intro. I would definitely go with OOT because if they don't like it then they won't like any Zelda in my opinion. But I can see not liking TP but loving other Zelda's. Just my opinion. Good watch. Thanks.
