Wonderful and colourful comparison between home-heating and coal fired stills! Fascinating as always!

Ralfy, I tasted a 15 year old Gordon and Macphail bottling of Longmorn distilled in 1989 last year and it was truly the most dynamic whisky I've ever tasted! The arrival was faintly peaty which developed into something both citrusy and vanilla-like. The finish was clean and floral. And that was all BEFORE adding the water! It was a completely different animal after that!

Ralfy, just read an article in the New York Times about new American single-malt whiskies. I didn't learn much new in it, though, because I've been following your vlogs and you've been talking about American whiskies for years! Keep up the excellent work!

Stumbled upon your channel only the previous weekend and it's been the best youtube find in this decade for me! Great, knowledgeable reviews and a pleasent style to present them. Tonight it's a Glenfiddich'y (12-yo) salute to you from Finland : )

Good move staying single. I'm married with kids, meaning very happy and fulfilled, but I have allot of expenses. Thankfully I can afford the 2 bottles of Longmorn 30 I just bought after watching your Vlog, keep up the great work. Thanks so much

Ralfy about the heating systems you mentioned. When you heat with an open fire, the air will flow out of the house through the chimney, carrying away the smoke. Fresh, cold, DRY air will come in through cracks in the house to maintain the air pressure. This has two consequences: First, areas away from the fire actually get colder, and secondly the air dries out, which makes indoor areas feel more comfortable. I also think Glenfarclas 12 is the best 12 year old I ever tasted, hands down.

Thanks for the Longmorn review Ralfy. Longmorn is a monster Speysider and as you mention there is some independent bottlings that are magnificent. I've got a Scott's '68/'03 that is one of the best single malts I've had in 25 years of drinking them.

No need for apologies. I value your vlogs very much and I do believe it's a good thing you're getting people to know the good stuff and how to enjoy it. It's just too bad for me sometimes. :)

I'm gonna try and seek out the 15 yr Longmorn, I think I saw it at a local shop not too long ago, I didn't give it much attention. Would love to see some more Macallan reviews, especially the standard range, since they will be phasing many of them out soon

Ralfy, love the reviews, thanks for the plethora of knowledge you have given me. Have you tried anything from Switzerland in the Whisky department? Specifically Santis Malt:edition dreifaltigeit @ 52% or one of their varieties? They are out of Brewery Locher which traditionally makes some nice swiss beers, but they also make whisky and age their whisky in used beer barrels. Thought it was an interesting concept as beer can be aged in used whisky and bourbon barrels. Cheers!

Interesting review. I've got the 15 year old in my cupboard and my mate doesn't know he's getting it for his 40th, next year. It was his favourite in years gone by. Will you be reviewing the G&M Longmorn 12 year old?

I've seen a few independents at Total Wine & More in Bellevue, namely a few Signatory bottles and one or two bottles from Gordon & MacPhail. If you're unable to head to the store itself, the Total Wine website should have a listing of what's in-stock (though your best bet would be to visit the store).

The pour on that Longmorn 30 looked almost syrupy. Sounds like a beauty and I'll have to keep it in mind when the times are nicer to my accounts.

I can shed light on this a wee bit. Our company was recently informed that Parcelforce (a company used by many shops like ours) was no longer allowing businesses to ship any alchohol over to America. I'd imagine this has something to do with American laws, rather than our own. We get a lot of sales from the states, and so do parcelforce, don't think it was their decision. You'll have to investigate what company your retailer is using for shipping :)

Ralfy, looking to pick up a special bottle, need your opinion. I know these are broad ranging but, what would you say is best of the bunch? Longhorn 30, Bruichladdich Black Arts 3, Glenfarclas 21, Balvenie 21 ?

Hello, Raly. One more malty name - malty contemplators. And also - Longmorn name looks funny, because eyes has a habbit to read familar words, not the new ones. That's why this whisky could have a second name - LongmoM ))

Quick question Ralfy, where to you get your whiskies from? Local shops, online , a combination of the two? I'm in the states and around where I live they only sell the bigger better selling brands. And now I've been told through certain online shops that I've used in the past that they can no longer ship outside the country. Kind of a bummer.

After the destruction of Teacher's Highland Cream and Te Bheag (both destroyed by their distillers after years of quality, particularly in Teacher's case) I'm wondering what your current recommendations for budget blends are. I imagine this drop in quality extends beyond these two blends. The last two bottles of Teachers I had were not just disappointing, they were bottles of bad whisky. Extremely unpleasant to drink. Is Grant's Family Reserve still a fair bet?

echos of praise for compass box Asyla here. also might praise Compass Box Peat Monster is surprisingly good for the price. left some in the glass over night with cap on ~ and found the oils staying on the side of the glass the next morning. got to be some age in there.

If you have a retailer that you buy from, ask them if they can order something for you. I've been pleasantly surprised with how easy it is for them to order just one bottle and have it for me, within a week. It all depends on the suppliers.

I have never seen an independent bottling in my life as far as I know. I live north of Seattle, in the State of Washington, U.S. I suppose because of the shipping distance, stores are less willing to gamble on a less recognizable whiskey from Scotland, so they only carry sure sells.

Just tried a fresh bottle of Grant's. Sadly, they too have taken a dive, though this bottle is not as wincingly bad as the last bottle of Teachers I tried. Hot young grain alcohol, subdued and somewhat stale malt, which is barely noticeable. Sadly we do not have Vat 69, Asyla or even Black Bottle here in Canada. Perhaps I'll eschew blends altogether in favour of El Dorado 12 rum, which is perhaps the best value for money where I live. I miss the days when Teachers was still good.

When an independent bottler buys whisky from the distillery, do they go through the warehouse and sample casks until they find what they want, or do they just take the next cask in line?

Yeah, thats an option for me now. But I live in the Seattle area, and until recently, liquor was state run, so that wasnt really an option. I guess I'm just still in that mindset even though liquor was privatized.

Maybe the direct coal firing used at Glendronach until 2005 is the reason their malts are so outstanding?

It is strange how we taste whisky different but also the fun. I have exactly this bottleling, and do not agree with the review. I found it sour and bitter, to much shoe-polish, and got worse adding water. Thanks for the more professional review. I am a simple humble whisky drinker.

Recently K&L Wines bought a 20 year old single cask Longmorn from the Exclusive Malts (a relatively new indy bottler). It's an absolute fruit bomb. It's really too bad the majority of Longmorn is reserved for blends.

With the obscene amounts of jack dropped on these unique bottlings one would have to hold a 3rd job just to entertain your informed musings Mr Ralfy. I dunno how u do it lest to guess that this is your ONLY passion. Oahh to wish! If only some of us maltsters had that luxary!! Dunno if you have any kids maltmate but damn theyre more expensive than any 30+yo Macallan & thats on a good day!! If your not already, stay single young man tortured smile Peace
