White Castle is the substantial remains of a Marcher Castle which fits the Childhood image of what a castle should look like including a big deep moat, round towers, special cross bow loops and impressive gatehouse. An amazing castle and great place to visit in Monmouthshire, one of the group of Three Castles
This video will provide a brief history, context and visiting tips for this extensive ruined castle
I aim to visit and make short videos on many castles across the country in addition to my regular ones, so please like, subscribe and click the alerts bell for future releases.
Thank you for watching Eclectic Experience change seen through images
White Castle is located Here in Monmouthshire Wales roughly 10 miles from Monmouth
On this map from Historic Wales, the area enclosed by red is the castle which is a Grade I listed building, and also a Scheduled Ancient Monument
The castle was originally built by the Normans to control this area following the Conquest, particularly the route between Wales and Hereford.
It was originally constructed of earth and wood, but some time in the 12th century probably around 1250 to 1260s it was rebuilt in stone - though there is some disagreement over the timing
For context and to get an idea of just how old this site is this is a list of monarchs from the present King Charles III going all the way back to William I, William the Conqueror
The original wooden castle was constructed shortly after the Norman conquest during the reign of William I
The reconstruction in stone was probably in the 1250s was in the reign of Henry III
And then it started to fall into disuse after the victory of Edward I over the Welsh Lords and its military significance dwindled.
So what remains today? - well actually a lot!
