For everyone wondering about Rosie Clooney's facial expression as she dances on to the stage, she's in character. Her character is a little nervous about how Bing's character will react to her being there.

Agreed, and there's the added layer of her being the singer of the two lead ladies, hence being less comfortable with the movement than Vera Ellen. Rosemary settles much more when she's just standing and singing, plus she recorded all the singing dubs for Vera Ellen's Judy character as well as her own.

@Northfan42

@@PaulLHunziker I looked deeper into it and you may be right. Some sources still say Rosemary sang for Vera Ellen, but more say that it was Trudy. Either way, Rosemary and Vera were cast (at least in part) because of their strengths in singing and dancing respectively. Vera Ellen's singing voice was dubbed, but Rosemary didn't have the equivalent option visually. She once quipped that this could have been a near-perfect movie if only they could have "dubbed" her dancing. Still, she made that awkwardness work wonderfully in character with the Army song.

To the people who say Rosemary Clooney's character, Betty, looks mad at the beginning, it's not anger. She's glancing over at Bing Crosby's character, Bob, because she's looking at his reaction to her being there. Betty was previously mad at Bob over a misunderstanding, had left the inn, and Bob thought he'd never see her again. She realized she was wrong about him and was back to make up and this number was their reconciliation. So she knew he'd be surprised at her showing up.

+prorrie Well in the army, navy, or whatever, you had responsibilities but they almost never changed and you were thoroughly trained for them, clothes were the same for everyone, you could tell at a glance if someone was your superior, you were trained in how to treat one another and those 'manners' never changed. Basically you knew everything you needed to in order to get along. Where in civilian life responsibilities constantly change, people hardly ever train you correctly if at all, you have to chose the right clothes for everything (weather, society, location, event, etc.), there are times when you can't tell if someone is your superior even after an hour of speaking with them, manners change depending on an innumerable amount of rules and ideals, there are any amount of ways one can slip and fall without even knowing they were even close to an edge. Lol, Hence their saying that Army life was "A life without responsibility"
@jesse3311
8 жыл бұрын
+DoctorChibi740 I don't it means literally "without responsibility". It rather means "a much simpler life". When you compare the responsibilities of a civilian, buy your food, pay your bills, go to college, get your life in order, start a family, keep your life together, get a job, budget correctly, life can get quite complicated. When you compare that complexity to the responsibilities of being in the military, it almost feels like a life "without responsibility" in comparison.

I've been humming this for a week straight......and I've never even been in the Army! God bless all that have served, and Merry Christmas (or whatever doesn't offend you) to all!

One of the finest movies of all time. Wonderful entertainment, great dancing, a profound message for humanity... a classic achievement with outstanding stars. For once, thank goodness, Kaye held his usual over-the-top corny act in check.

After 28 years of active and Reserve duty in the Army, I hit my Mandatory Retirement Date 3 1/2 years ago. This song sums up my desire to return to either Weekend Drills in the Reserves or doing an active duty stint. Right now...besides my involvement in my local American Legion Post, I don my Army uniform for parades and ceremonies. Reminds me of what the Wizard of Oz told Dorothy: “Back where I come from we have men who are called heroes. Once a year they take their fortitude out of mothballs and they parade it down the main street and they have no more courage than you have.”

ltbrooks Yeah, she's not sure how he'll handle her coming back, and he's surprised to see her. You see his face change to happiness, and then she's fine. Never noticed that before.

My army experience sucks. I was drafted in 1968 to serve the army to fight in Vietnam for no reason to kill. I survived, but some of body still had pain, and I need a crane to walk.
