I love my Madeira fig tree. We put the insides into the Vitamix on soup for 2 rounds to cook and puree, then we pour it into the dehydrator trays and dehydrate on 130 for 10 hours or so (depends on humidity and ripeness) We peel it into 3-4 inch wide strips and wrap in plastic wrap for homemade fruit roll ups. We also do this with peaches, plums, apples, and persimmons. These figs are pure honey!

You can do a lot with potted figs and a little greenhouse. If you're willing to carry the tree in and out during spring and fall as necessary, you can grow figs in virtually any zone with a little pop-up greenhouse.

Don't be. I'm having a horrific year as well. I'm also getting the outer bands of Hurricane Sally now, so today has been a total washout with 2 inches accumulated thus far, and it's going to rain here for another 2.5 days into Saturday evening. All my figs ripening are certainly lost. That's on top of the direct hit we got from Hurricane Isaias last month, which caused all sorts of damage in my garden. We have accumulated over 63 inches of rain so far this year, so chances are we will wind up with 75-100 inches of rainfall this calendar year. Miserable. I wish I could donate about 25 inches to the west coast and help them out.

I prune potted trees like this: kzitem.info/news/bejne/2nx5z6yBq3libGk In-ground I espalier like this: kzitem.info/news/bejne/mn6ez3V4sXxjbG0 I believe pruning is essential for vigorous growth. Figs like being pruned. How hot your climate is may dictate how hard you prune them, but I stress limiting main trunks and promoting lower branching.

Another great variety for me to look for!!! Thanks. Had a question about maybe a future video or just some written advice. I have a VERY large brown turkey fig in my yard here in north florida. It is approximately 12 feet wide and 12 feet tall. I have let it go obviously and want to prune it back heavily this winter to make it more manageable. Wondering if you could give any advice on where to start on a very large tree like this. It is in bush form. And all but grown wild.
@TheMillennialGardener
4 жыл бұрын
If you're in North Florida, your tree, I assume, sees little to no dieback. You should decide if you want to keep it as a tree or a bush. If you want to go with a tree, which is the form I recommend, I would select anywhere from 1-3 ideal branches that can be main trunks - look for wood that is about 2 inches in diameter - and head them all as single trunks that are 18 inches tall. Basically, you'd cut your tree down to THIS but only leave 1 to 3 main trunks. Everything else would be removed completely down to the ground: pruningdiaries.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/0802.jpg If you want it to be a very manageable tree, you'd cut it down to one individual trunk and get rid of ALL the rest of the wood. If you want it to be a specific looking, multi-trunked tree, figure out how many main trunks you want to keep. I know it sounds wild to cut a fig tree down like that, but believe me when I tell you it'll be 8 feet tall by the end of the new season. Do your pruning around February 1 in your location. If you want to keep it as a bush, you could leave a lot more trunks. That's up to you.
@toddfromflorida

@@TheMillennialGardener Thank you very much. It is going to be very drastic but I will definitely do that. And you are correct, no die back whatsoever. Especially since we live close to the river so it keeps the freezes at bay. I would say there are many, many branches that are probably 2-3 inches across. So I should have lots to choose from. I may try to do a lot of cuttings on this too. I know this is a common fig but maybe someone wants them. It will get me a little practice for a couple better cuttings I have coming. LSU Scotts Black. Not super rare either but not in the stores around me certainly. Thanks again.

@@toddfromflorida worst case, you can take the cuttings into the woods around the areas and just stick the cuttings in the ground. Many will root on their own simply by sticking them in the ground overtime. You can be like Johnny Appleseed with fig trees, spreading the joy of fruit trees around.

@@TheMillennialGardener I will do that! I was not exaggerating when I say it is +/- 12 feet tall and the same wide. I will have cuttings coming out of my ears so I will pop a few in the ground on some county owned land that is out of the way. Would be cool to see some fig tress grow wild. The squirrels and birds around me love to eat them. I bet in the woods it will be a really good source of food for the critters....

@TheMillennialGardener
4 жыл бұрын
No. A greenhouse isn't in the cards here, especially with my HOA. One day I'd like to build a sunroom, but I need to fall backwards in a pile of money for that to happen. I wouldn't want to grow figs in a greenhouse, though, because the humidity kind of ruins them and the diffused sunshine doesn't allow the skin to form properly. It's tough growing figs on the humid coast.

@@TheMillennialGardener Sorry to hear about the HOA, I know they can be very picky, too picky for me. :) I agree about growing figs in green houses though, I was merely hoping that any that are currently ripening may finish better out of the weather we are having. How would you compare this with the Black Madeira? Is one better than the other in terms of taste?
@TheMillennialGardener
4 жыл бұрын
I haven't been able to ripen Black Madeira well. Last year was my BM's first season, and it was a slow grower (which it's known to be). I only ripened maybe 1 or 2 fruits well because all the rest exploded on me. This year, the BM was killed to the base, so it's wayyyyy behind again. Honestly, the couple BM's I did ripen last year weren't as good as my I-258, and this WM#1 is potentially better than my I-258 and doesn't have any of the problems BM has - WM#1 is much more vigorous, larger, earlier and more rain resistant. I can't say WM#1 is better tasting because I need yet another year to do a fair side-by-side, but with all the problems BM has, if I had to pick between the two, the BM would be on the Burn Pile in an instant and the WM#1 would be going in-ground in my best spot I had to offer.

The Millennial Gardener thank you so much for your reply! I've been trying to find some BM cuttings for sale and not a lot have them. And the ones that do that are hopefully real, are asking for ridiculous prices. And many videos I've watched had said it's the best fig they've had. So I wanted to make sure if it's worth the effort to even get one since I have limited space and already just recently gotten a Yellow Long Neck. I guess I'll hold off till I see something reasonable. Thanks again. 😁

@@lemontea128 taste is very subjective. The handful I've had have not wow'd me. I have many other varieties that I think taste better and grow much better. But again, I need to test BM more objectively. It keeps failing on me. Black Madiera is getting more common. If I were you, I would contact Big Bill at Off The Beaten Path Nursery in October. He should have cuttings if you ask early enough. He isn't crazy with his prices. Unfortunately, I almost never get a chance to offer any because my tree doesn't grow well or keeps getting killed back.

Can anyone tell a difference between White Madeira #1 vs White Madeira vs Black Madeira & KK
@TheMillennialGardener
Ай бұрын
Black Madeira and White Madeira are nothing alike. One is a green fig, the other is a black fig. There is no difference between Black Madeira and Black Madeira KK. The “KK” are the initials of a man where some claim that strain is less affected by fig mosaic virus, but no figs will show signs of FMV if fertilized properly. White Madeira #1 is a specific fig, but almost no one trades the other varieties.

@@im11000 anywhere with warm, dry summers. The best state to grow figs in the US is undoubtedly California because they have the perfect Mediterranean climate along the southern coast and the San Joaquin / Sacramental River Valleys. Some of the finest figs in the world can be grown around places like Sacramento, Fresno and Modesto, and those areas tend to colonize the fig wasp. Figs will also produce high quality fruits in warm, semi-arid areas of Arizona and Texas. You can grow decent figs in the Southeast and Northeast if you're lucky to string together a week's worth of warm, dry days coinciding with ripening, but the rain here messes things up.
