This past weekend Blaine and I headed to the White Mountains east of Bishop, CA to explore the high mountains and deep canyons of this new zone. The main goal of the weekend was to summit White Mountain, a fourteen thousand foot peak as well as to enjoy my new Kona Ouroboros drop bar mountain / gravel bike on its first real rides.
On our first day of this weekend trip, to warm up and acclimate to our new surroundings, we did this Silver Canyon loop ride (12 mi, 4.5k). The ride began near Silver Peak at an elevation of 10.5k and descended down the steep Silver Canyon Road for 4000 vertical feet. From there we entered Silver Canyon on Old Silver Canyon Road. The first 1000 feet of vertical consisted of mostly walking the bike in the loose gravel of the wash. Once we got to the back of the canyon and higher up, the surface of the singletrack trail was packed enough to pedal. There was some pushing required higher up, as the trail gets steep in parts.
We found an old cabin somewhere along the way. We arrived back at the top about three and half hours after descending. We summitted Silver Peak to cap off this ride.
Next time, I would like to do the singletrack trail of Old Silver Canyon road as an out-and-back to skip the walking portion of the bottom of the canyon and to get in a cool three thousand foot singletrack descent.
