I learned of this route from the awesome Seattle Mountain Running Group on Facebook.
White Pass Pilot Ridge Loop
www.alltrails....
28.5 miles, with 7550ft ascent, this loop is challenging!
We drove up the night before and slept in the car along the road just down from the trailhead. Parking lot was full and hikers were using every available roadside spot within a half mile.
After a great warmup of easy forest running, the real climb starts. Starting at mile 5.5 it climbs nearly 3000 feet for about 3.5 miles.
I stopped and filled with water at a stream in an early switchback, I read there was limited water access for a while after some point, but didn’t know where the last chance was. I wasn’t very prepared with knowledge of water sources, so I carried with me enough to get to Blue Lake.
The approach to White Pass begins the awesome views. And the views don’t stop. The section along the Pacific Crest Trail is lovely and runnable.
Elevation profiles show climbs in the second half, but I didn’t appreciate how ass-kicky they were going to be. I was really feeling beat down after a while. The decent from Pilot Ridge to the river is steep, to climb it would be way harder than the initial climb I did, and descending it was tough work on tired legs.
A very fun, tough, awesome day.
