I just inherited this same machine from my dad that recently passed during covid. He was a treasure hunter and always found rings, old coins..jewelry ect. I am brand new to the sport and would love some advice on this particular machine if anyone is still tuning in. Mine has a "whites 300 ltd" coil and i am unsure of what effect different coils bring to the table. Thanks in advance guys. Id love to make this a pastime and continue my ol mans tradition. Thanks again.

You should lay down coil on the ground when it ballancing, then it will when is clear.

Preamp gain to 3. Ground balance will work. Set ac sens to where it is about 3 to 4 points lower than falsies. Set filters as low as you can stand without noise. It will reach deep on 3khz for coins. The stock programs are idiot safe. Do not reach far.

I love it, it doesn’t perform very well… Do you want to buy it? I have an old DFX I know what you are talking about.

If u turn sensitivity up as close to max as can it will go much deeper

He needs to learn the machine before he gives such a poor review of it it's a workhorse of a detector

When you air/ground balance it you need to drop the coil on the ground to stabilize it and balance it because your soil must have mineralization for it not to balance. Ok first you are using the stock programs. The stock programs are set moderately for beginners but this machine has many settings to learn and UNDERSTAND where you will get so much more out of it so of coarse a factory setting isn't gonna hit its max depth capability. Here let me give you some help with settings to try so you can give it a more realistic review. You put it in the Relic mode but then you changed it to Best Data. Best Data is best for the coin mode or only high conductivity targets. Coorelate mode is best for the Relic mode which is designed for higher iron ground. Your power settings are way too low for the concentric coil which can handle higher power settings then that. If you're looking for hammered silver you can and should run her in 3kHz which loves silver. Being you're not using the Tone ID you should've put it in mixed mode which steps it up to another level of depth detection. Relic Mode requires a quicker sweep but you lowered the sweep speed then YOU DID NOT LOWER THE RECOVERY SPEED!!! Sweep speed and Recovery Speed have to be adjusted together or you will significanttly lose depth. It even states this in the operating manual which settings work with others so you dont change one with changing the others either up or down or you handcuff its capabilities and it just showed. Also you should turn on DC Phase. The DC Phase when activated in the pinpoint will give you a very accurate ID of the target. It reports the VDI on the sweep using a 6.59 kHz reading but then when the pinpoint is activated it reads the target using the 15kHZ frequency and the phase shift of the 2 different numbers will tell you if your 75 reading is aluminum trash or a copper coin as the aluminum will drop to a 60's number and the penny will stay at 75 or go up slightly higher. It helps to have run this machine and learn it before you give it a biased review or false review unless its just from inexperience in not using this detector enough to learn it. If you want a turn on and go machine then no this isn't for you. If you want to reach expert levels of detecting then learn the large number of adjustments that this machine is capable of that aren't even available on modern machines. I'm not saying this as an insult but this didn't address a fraction of its capabilities. If I set up that machine up I would've hit those targets with ease. You're also using the 950 (9 1/2)" coil where you're probably comparing it to others using their 11" coils which is by far not a true apples to apples fair comparison. There's also 10" DD, a 12" 300, and 14" & 18" deep seeking cache hunting coils along with several smaller sniper coils available depending on what you're looking for and your ground situation. This detector has all the same technology used in todays modern machine being Whites actually invented the technology but lost it when patents expired which by coincidence is when so many new detectors broke out on the market. The only difference is today everyone uses DD coils for a snappier responce and seperation at the cost of some depth lost since concentric coils do go deeper and they pinpoint dead on center unlike the DD that gets you close and even can miss if you dont pay attention. I noticed how you talked well of the Garrett Apex. Its a good machine but are you aware that Garrett worked with Whites and came out with the Apex after they bought Whites company including all patents, tooling and machinery? The Apex is a result of this DFX technology only it still doesn't have as many functions as this machine. The DFX never caught on because it required a decent amount of learning and understanding of how detectors work to get it's maximum performance. And for the price of this technology the average person wasn't going to spend the money to learn it they want a turn on and go. Thats understandable but the ground situation everywhere isnt identical so turn on and go has ots limits so bottom line you still need to learn how they work to get the best out of every machine and this wasn't realized when this beast of a detector came out well before its time. If this machine was refitted with modern computer chips it would stand out of the crowd significantly.

This comment made me wanna buy DFX after reading. I used to have XL PRO and I remember that my colleague who had DFX could catch much more coins at the same time.

This machine is way more capable then what he showed. I don't like to bash anybody and I'm not bashing him but he doesn't understand how to set it up when he adjusted the sweep speed without adjusting the recovery he actually did more bad then good. I have this detector that I got in 2001 and still today it will go up against today's modern machines but it does have a bigger learning curve. It's a hell of a metal detector it's been running multiple frequencies for over 20 years. It's way before it's time

You should be smarter than the machine you are trying to use, Pal. Even though it is dated, the DFX is still a great machine today.

The DFX was designed for the serious or professional detectorist. I haven't even watched the video yet I'm typing while listening so I don't know how well he navigates through it but many people today would struggle with it. I still use mine even though I have modern machines that respond faster and I can ID targets so much better with this DFX. But if one doesn't learn this matching first and/or understand what it's settings do you'll never get it to what it's truly capable of doing. You can also get the D2 DD coils and she reacts quicker but IMO it's a better machine running the 950.
