saw first hand a guy get decapitated by a paddle blade in a similar situation - cut through his neck like butter - the poor guys head was rolling around the floor of our raft while we were jostled around in some class 4 rapids. Amazingly no one jump out. Blood everywhere. So much blood. Our guide shoved the head in a soft cooler bag and we just wedged the body in the back near the guide. Longest raft trip ever getting back. Somber. Paddles are no joke...

For those who say helmets are not needed, I just went rafting this past weekend for the first time, without going into detail we ended up tipping the boat, I went head first into the water and slammed my head into the rocks on the riverbed. The helmet saved my life. The scratches on the helmet were deep and the impact alone would of probably killed me if I had no helmet. So I would rather be called a wimp then be dead.

as a raft guide who has jumped before multiple times and op purpose, it's hard to tell if he did it on purpose or not, even if he didn't want to be thrown in the air he would have been anyway because he wasn't wearing shoes so it's hard to say if he intended to jump or not, now with that said the lack of shoes is almost as bad as not wearing a helmet imo. And for the record I've never ran or will run a river without my helmet.

I was involved in a horrific rafting accident I didn't know much about it or researched it I went with my church group on Colorado this rafting company didn't have helmets of course a terrible accident happend 15 people fell out (multiple rafts that crashed) unfortunately I was one of them who fell my best friends I got the worst injuries one of them got a concussion because her head got hit by a rock and one of my other friends got eye cut and was bleeding and a couple of my friends got stuck their foot caught in the rocks thankfully nothing that bad happens to me other than drowning and just in shock for several weeks thinking I could've lost my best friends.Now I've researched so much more about rafting and I'm outraged we weren't provided any helmets and I excepted a calm river (since the church has been there for yrs and they are used to cruising through turns out it was more violent this year)please research more about these extreme dangerous sorts before trying them out.Its a serious matter a week before we went someone died I wish I knew all this info before!!!

The guide and their Company is responsible to make sure they rafter wear helmets. Also it's irresponsible of the guide to do cool looking body flips out of the rear of the raft. Like that. Obviously it causes injuries. As seen here. He whacked her with his paddle. Because he was showing off.

Helmets are rarely worn here, it's generally not necessary.... and the guides get launched all. the. time. Would you expect your guide to toss his paddle if he's bounced up, then where would they be? Yeah, it probably sucked to get hit in the head, but she's still concious, everyone is in the boat, and she signed a release form.

I agree with iditarod07 that rafting, as well as all outdoor sports, has some physical risk. It is not a Disneyland ride. Accidents do happen. The guide did not jump as pattyp333 says but was propelled up by the reaction of the raft bucking out of the hole. The rearend of a raft is the most vunerable spot to be. Helmets may have helped but a 18ft raft on a class 3 river is pretty safe and would not usually call for helmets. As with all rafting injuries, I am sorry to see anybody hurt.
@LarryNapier

If anyone checks back I wasn't defending anyone just stating the facts. This is a class II drop. Very easy with one hit. This kind of accident rarely happens and was truly an accident. Except for the fact the guide lost control of his paddle it was a good run. (Other than that Mrs. Lincoln how was the play?) My hope is the guest healed quickly and the guide learned an expensive lesson.

There arent any 2 yr olds in that boat. We take kids as young as 4 but run our river pretty safely with young ones in the boat and like Buttersquatch said, there are some rapids we dont even run when little ones are in the boat, we just run a safe line around them. Those kids up front look small but they are on their knees in the front, the youngest looks 5 or 6. I take kids that young and younger on the river all the time.

well this is a perfect reason why they need to be wearing helmets. The rocks under the water arent the only danger on the river. More injuries occur from T-grips on the paddles, than anything else.

It wasn't till the mid eighties that commercial rafters started wearing helmets. We ended up having more head injuries after putting helmets on than we had before the helmets. That being said this is an unintended consequence of the guide going for air and losing control of his paddle. And in this case a helmet would have save the guest from a gash.
@snoboarder2427

Alright first the guide did not "Jump", I've been guiding on the snake for 4 years, with the weight in the front of the boat the guide can get thrown, and it sucks Yesterday I took that woman's friend down the river, she understands it was an accident and does not hold the guide responsible, it was an accident! White water Rafting has it's inherent risks and the customers that come down the river should know that, if you think that it is going to be a Disneyland fun ride, STAY THE F*** HOME!

My comment about no helmets was related to this video only. Children look under 10 years old so I am thinking it is off season when things are less crazy. Guide was just careless. Also, helmets are also determined by the depth of the river. Glad you weren't hurt. I wear them on the Penobscot and Gauley but not on the Kennebec because it is like being in the ocean.
@TheZakkattackk

There are two types of people that wear helmets on the Snake. Kayakers and gaper tourists. Both have their reasons. What do I know though? You're the white water expert. I hope you bring a life preserve with you at all times in case it rains too hard.

They hit a reactionary wave and that is what happens you go flying. Guides aren't tried on to the rafts by rope because if the boat got stuck in a hole and flipped they would drown. They all should have had helmets on, they save lives and protect you from accidents like that.
