Not until a DNA project that included my family was it discovered we are Romani. The last few years have traced the move from England to the USA and the names of the immigrant family members. My best friend is Romani, I grew up with her and know a lot about the culture through her. I stayed with her gypsy family in Serbia for a whole summer once in a little Romani home. It is very mystical and the reason they don’t have written history is cause they believe it should be passed down orally. They have a long tradition of story telling. They also don’t want non Romani people to learn about it. It’s secret and hidden for a reason. They are very wise people.

Fantastic work, Ali! Being an Indian living in Europe, I was amazed and somewhat overwhelmed to learn about the Romani’s historical Indian connect and lineage. Theirs is truly a culture that must be preserved and celebrated. And perhaps the only way that’s possible is through a process of Western catharsis and recognition that the Romani deserve after all they’ve suffered and been through over centuries. Truly a fantastic start and well done again 🙏

I'm an English born Romani. When I visited India for the first time (over 20 years ago), I was shocked to discover I understood some of your language. I was in Maharashtra at the time. It was a surreal experience. Also, seeing some of the northern tribal women, I had the bizarre experience that I recognized/knew them somehow. I didn't think it in my head, I felt it in my body, if that makes sense. Like DNA recognizing itself. This was all before I understood our genetic connections.

Unfortunately, they also suffered in India. The European Roma are probably the descendants of Dalits, the untouchables who are at the lowest level of the Indian caste system, who left the Indian subcontinent approximately 1,000 years ago, an Indian-Estonian international study revealed. The authors compared the DNA samples of European Roma men and thousands of inhabitants of the Indian subcontinent. More than 10,000 biological samples from 214 different ethnic groups were examined. The greatest similarity was found in DNA samples collected among members of the lowest caste, the untouchables, who live in some areas of northwest India. Although the caste system was officially abolished in India, it still remains in many places. An estimated 160 million people belong to the Dalit caste. Untouchables are not allowed to enter temples, the houses of higher caste persons and can only do the menial jobs. Researchers believe that the ancestors of the European Roma migrated west to take part in the war that raged in the Punjab region between 1001 and 1026. They were probably promised a higher caste if they won. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/9719058/European-Roma-descended-from-Indian-untouchables-genetic-study-shows.html

I was compelled to tune in to your excellent video on the Romani because I have always been called to investigate their culture, history and especially their music. I grew up in England, the North to be precise where we had many Romani folk living on the periphery of our cities. We were so used to them coming door to door selling their goods, offering to work, etc. As young children we longed to be admitted to their groups where there was often music, a fire and lots of children who always appeared to us very free to run and play at will. I longed to be one of those fortunate children. Of course, at that time we knew nothing of the discrimination towards their groups. They were never spoken of in a negative manner and my parents always welcomed them at our door selling goods and offering to work. Your expose of their struggle through the centuries was very enlightening and thoroughly enjoyable. Thank you and keep up the excellent work.

It was because a man tragically died because two people stabbed him, and they thought that they were romanis. It was awful, they shouted things like: “there is roma crime” and they said that we should stop roma-crime. They found out later that the two criminals wasn’t even romani, so it was purely a racist protest. Other example: the supreme court gave financial compensation for the students in Gyöngyöspata, because they were purely segregated by their race. They got the worse teachers, they weren’t allowed to use the bathroom what the white kids used, and they were on an other floor in the school. And it was because of their race, not because of their grades, or behavior. And the PRIME MINISTER of Hungary said that its bad that they got a refund, because they didn’t deserved it. Nobody here try to uplift romanis, because yes, many of them live in a very bad situation. But how we expect them to live in a higher class when these kind of situations happening all of the time? Many hungarian think that romanis are criminals because “it’s in their blood” which is obviously ridiculous....

Never had a good or at least positive experience with any Roma and I have encountered them in Germany, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Hungary and the former USSR. They are uniquely able to make themselves hated anywhere they go. Roma apologists generally have never had to live or work around them. I lost all hope for these people when I watched them prostitute their prepubescent girls (and boys) to tourists in Constanta, Romania. Stereotypes do not arise spontaneously or with out reason. Furthermore, something isn't a stereotype if it is true, which is the case with most descriptions of Roma behaviour.

I'm from Germany and I remember the cultural bias against the Roma I was surrounded by since birth (which still exists to this day) I was ushered away from women wearing traditionally romani clothing by my parents, I saw the negative portrayal of romani people in the media, I listened to teachers spewing what I now recognize as blatantly racist rhetoric and when I learned about the holocaust in school, the genocide of the Sinti and Roma was only a footnote or maybe mentioned in passing. It's mindboggling how accepted open racism against the Roma still is, even in a country that tries so hard to distance itself from its racist past I'm only now learning more about the beautiful romani culture on my own accord after being taught my whole life that they were to be feared, and it's eye-opening....

Hi Tom, great to see you here too. You met my twin sister Char and I at our Osage gathering a few years back. As well as that, we also have Romani heritage as well as Native. I am equally proud to come frm both. I am a mix of multiple ethnic groups in my family tree coming together. To those who are going to predictably try to tell me that you cannot be more than one thing only, yes, you can. Any combination of ancestry is possible when humans come together. I am grateful to be a mix of things as it has literally taught me tolerance of other people's backgrounds and cultures, too. It has also taught me to not judge someone just based on what culture they are or are not. I go by character and love learning about ALL world cultures because we are all human in the end. My dream is that one day we will all see, and treat, each other as equals and learn to appreciate our differences and what makes us each unique (both as groups and as individuals, as well) instead of discriminating against each other over them.

May we learn from past/present human wrongs and atrocities & may we allow love and peace to permeate our hearts and minds and repel all hatred and evil. For hatred and evil, makes us none the wiser and only hurts us more in the end. May we educate ourselves more and may we cease to reject, isolate, ostracise, and condemn innocent souls, for this, is the greatest of human sins/evils. May God bless the Romani peoples globally. I live in Romania. I searched this video today after having to take my daughter home from the park and trying to explain what she saw: a Romani family started playing in the water park where my daughter was playing. The father was laughing hysterically as he was taking his 2-3 year old baby boy and baby girl by the hair (the kids showed signs of pain as he was aggressively yanking them around) and shoving their faces in the concrete ground where the water was was spraying out. Then, an 8 year old girl who I don't believe was Romani was playing near by and happened to splash the Romani guy; he took her by the ponytail and began doing the same thing. All kids were crying; only the guys were having some sort of sick fun. No one sitting around steps up to help or bothers to call the police, probably out of fear that the Romani will retaliate. How do I explain that behavior to my daughter without warning her to stay away from a people group that seems to go unpunished? About a year ago, I was riding the city bus and noticed that the front half of the bus was crowded because the back half of the bus had only one Romani family where the husband(???) was yelling at his wife(???) and occasionally punching her in the face. You don't see that stuff too often in Romania in public, but EVERY time I have, Romani people were involved. Again, I try to love people of all cultures, but I told my wife that I'm probably going to die one day finally standing up to a Romani guy who is abusing his kids or wife. There is a legitimate fear here, and due to the begging, yes, quite a bit of disgust for people who have their 4-year-olds dragging around real, infant baby sisters/brothers like ragdolls next to busy streets while their mom's dig in dumpsters (not an exaggeration; I saw this from my apartment balcony). I know those are possibly the exception, but I've not see any of the other people groups in Romania doing this in the years that I've lived here.

Like you I don't share any kind of disdain towards romanis. I live in Sweden and knew a romani gentleman that was bullied by kids in the boarding school he attended as a child. The guy is extremely kind and speaks with eloquency and of course this baffled me because he was the first romani I've met who's normal. All because I've seen romanis like you've described doing absolutely horrendous things publicly that would make anyone frown. You can't point out the negative stereotypes that such romanis draw to themselves, and I don't think this video does justice by only mentioning the prejudice these people face without also including why they isolate themselves from the rest.

Some Romani moved en masse into our Bronx neighborhood in 1979-80. We were clueless about their culture . The girls did not go to school, but walked around barefoot and crocheted lace. There was an old man who was the boss of them all who whistled at women with their kids. The boys would start fights then run and when you chased them , 10 men would be waiting around the corner. We had some brutal gang fights . Neighborhood kids versus the Gy p sies . They started all of it. I asked a boy i befriended to bring the daily newspaper to a housebound elderly Uncle since I got a scholarship and attended school I had to commute to. My uncle was bedridden. He let his family in and they stole every thing in the apartment but the bed he was sleeping on. They even stole his wife’s ashes. We had to fight them to get it all back. Flash forward to living in San Francisco. My neighbor was a Flamenco dancer. She would have great Flamenco parties. If she had Romani over , she would put all her valuables in my flat. They show up in NorCal now , begging in shopping malls with their kids. I pulled over to help a stranded driver on a busy Napa highway. I immediately recognized him as being like the guys in the Bronx. He wanted money for gas and wanted to sell me his gold jewelry. My guess is he had a box of fake gold rings and necklaces and that was his hustle. I called him on it and we both laughed as he knew his hustle was exposed. Told him to fu ck off and went on my way. The persecution of these people is tragic but they suck to have around. * edited to avoid KZitem censoring reality that conflicts with their baseless world view

Spot on. It's the same here in Europe. Plus drug trafficking , other shady businesses, marrying their kids super young, not letting them study. They have a hard time finding a job and that is unfortunate but they tend to be so rude in restaurants and so untrustworthy. Also exactly what you say, mess with one, you mess with 10 or more. One goes to the hospital, entire family camps there and then it becomes a real issue there.

In Portugal we had several cases of nurses and doctors stabbed by gypsies because the medical staff blocked the clan from invading ER and they just couldn't abide by a simple rule in a place where order must be kept so doctors can save lives. In a children's hospital they forced out a child patient sharing the room with a gypsy child so the entire gypsy family had extra space to sleep in the room. The nurses found the mother of the other child desperately screaming for help trying to stop them from pushing the bed with the intubated child out of the room. A year ago a family beat to death a 3 y-o little girl as revenge on the mother for owing them money for a witchcraft job meant to "tie" the mother's new boyfriend. The little girl's name was Jessica Biscaia. Google it. The type of cruel, barbaric stuff they do is beyond demonic.

I've watched several documentaries on KZitem about Roma in various E, European countries and they are similarly forced to live in terrible places, while also being refused garbage, water and power services, and cannot find steady employment. It's interesting that in the USA, the Roma blend in with everyone else, so don't make obvious targets. Thank you,, Ali. This was important.

I met many of them and their language sounds just like a marwari tribe. Romani do have some similarity to the language i speak. But I see that they are persecuted everywhere

Thank you for this video its pure gold!🙏💓💎 I live in Europe but I am Iranian and my family are originally from a desert city in around south central/kinda south east of Iran and where many used to and still are!) nomads and live a nomadic lifestyle. I am VERY sure that they passed through our city as its part of the so called "Silk road" from India to Europe where many of the British used to come and go to from Britain to India and vice versa to bring teas, spices and much more. Soo much people used to come and go on that road soo this city also is famous for its Caravan-hotels called Caravansarai, which ofcourse many Romani's used to have for transporting themselves besides horses too. I also can understand a bit of my friends Romani language (she speaks Kalderash dialect.) And also the physical similarities are VERY much to us Persians(from around those areas/cities especially!) Soo I am SOOO sure we share alot of DNA and that makes me REALLY proud and happy even if the entire Europe despise Romanis, I honestly I couldn't care less.. I say its their great loss!..😊

In 2005 I took my dad to Samwa su sin France , please excuse my miss spelling of this French town , this is where Django lived his last days and died ! Truly a genius! And where the Romani people gather every year to celebrate Django genius guitar performances and life!! , we were of very few none Romani people there! Unbelievable the talented people ! We will never forget the wonderful experience of that day , it was a dream come true for my father! Who himself played and idolized Django’s playing! “ Clouds “ was my dads favorite! I hear you & i do agree. It's very sad & to think, that even in this day & age, there are countless, who still regard ALL Romani peoples as, thieves, thugs, losers, etc;. It's disgusting & actually, it says much more about those who speak evil against the Romani, than the Romani themselves. I have never heard a Romani person speak ill of anyone. They simply demand acknowledgement, justice, a voice, respect, equal rights & anything else, required for healthy human survival. The truth is, they're no different from any other human & we too, all expect & demand the exact same things. Please check out PP Peter's you tube video, regarding a visit he made to the Romani community in i think, Albania. It's so sad to see, that they're "denied" absolutely everything they need, to live healthy & happy lives. These needs, are not luxuries, but damn necessities! When will the wider world, start treating the Romani peoples more humanely?! And btw, please start calling Romani peoples "Gypsies"!! This term, isn't widely accepted & tolerated, by the general/wider Romani populations.

It's always precious to hear people with absolutely no lived experience talk about gypsies and the difficulties they allegedly face. Spend a few months living near a few and see how you feel.
@anniestumpy9918
Жыл бұрын
yep. Living near those people means your property will lose 90 % of it's value because of noise, antisocial behavior and trash and filth. So much trash... it's like they intentionally ignore the local waste collection which is even free for them because the community pays for everything! People have been driven to suicide because of that.
