I just spent some time looking at this with the engine and the intricacies of this endgame are crazy! For example Re4 immediately without Re7+ seems to be a draw, because you have to force the black king away from controlling e8 so you can hide your king from checks on e8 later while controlling the queening square, and the black can’t play kf8 to control e8 because that allows white to gain an important tempo with a check on the back rank later, which slows white black’s counterplay with the passed b pawn just enough so that white can promote first. Even so, there are some lines black has to avoid where Re7+ can be played later instead which win for white; there are also some lines where the b pawn can be sacrificed for a draw... there are so many intricate ideas and it’s really hard to understand why they work in some lines and in others they don’t, when it seems like there’s no difference. Even the engine has to be put on high depth to correctly evaluate many of the lines. No wonder even Magnus couldn’t find the win here.

Excellent analysis. Nice to feel I instinctively spotted Re7+, - but without realising the need to return to e5! Under pressure, I'd probably have gone for black's a pawn but I now realise this would result in a draw at best, and only if white is able to avoid the exchange of rooks. If rooks are exchanged, it's surely a loss with white's King stranded from the remaining pawns.

Hey Agad, I am a very big fan of your channel, but I wonder whether on 11:06 if you play Re4 then if you get to the position you mentioned you CAN actually get out of check by building the so called bridge, after Rd2+ Ke4 Re2+ Kd5, Rd2+ can be met with Rd4 blocking and the black king is too far to prevent queening, I bet there are many other dangers in the position, but escaping from black rook checks shouldn't be one of them

But would you play Re4 after? The engine seems to think that’s the only way to win btw: Re7+, Kf6, Re4. You can’t play Re4 without giving the check first, that’s a draw. You can’t play Re7+ and then anything other than Re4, that’s also a draw. “Spotting” a move doesn’t just mean playing it, it means knowing the continuation too, and it’s really hard to understand why Re7+ Kf6 Re4 wins and nothing else does. Even stockfish has to go to somewhat high depth (depth 34) to see that this wins; at low depth it thinks white can’t win.
