Raleigh isn't boujie/snooty. People just want to have a good time, and the Canes benefit from a local sport culture steeped in local ACC rivalry and behavior. The storm surges are a perfect representation of that culture because they aren't taking themselves so seriously and just enjoying the experience. It seems to be working for them because they are currently leading their division.

Raleigh just happens to be the perfect storm (pun not intended) of factors for a unique sports culture. It’s the only professional franchise in a rapidly growing city, so the fanbase ended up transplanting a lot of the college identity into Canes fandom. It’s this weird mix where if there wasn’t a Canes game on we’d all hate each other’s guts as Duke/UNC/State/Wake fans, but with that logo on our apparel we’re all the overlooked little brother. Can’t wait to get back to the Finals, the rest of the hockey world needs reminding about just how loud we can get

Ive spoken to players about playing for the islanders. When they play against them it appears like Long Island is a shithole because they would only see uniondale. Then when they joined the islanders they realized how awesome the island is. It’s got all of the high society aspects of Manhattan but with less people and beach front properties

I grew up on Long Island and was in a Metal band in the late 80's and played many shows in the city. I loved the city. NYC. But after the POS Mayer of the last bunch of years the city has become unsafe! It smells like weed and piss everywhere you go. I live in NC now but still visit NY and the city. The fan base in NC is awesome!!!! I grew up a Ranger fan but after being here for 20+ years the Canes have grown on me. I was a fan before and through "The dark years". The storm surge is great. They have kinda chilled on it since covid. Hockey culture is big here now. This past March Sadness was proof. The crowd used to be empty in March due to the NCAA championships. But for the last few years the Hurricanes are still selling out the home games in March. The youth hockey is one of the top programs in the USA. Part of this is because the NHL players that are retiring from the Canes and other teams and moving to NC. These retired NHLers are coaching their kids teams. Plus you have all the transplants from northern US and Canada escaping and moving to NC. (I say I escaped NYnot movd from NY) Parents from up north are moving to the Raleigh area so their kids can play youth hockey here. You have some of the best goalie coaches and powerskating coaches here as well. In the summer there are many hockey camps for the kids including one of the best... Hockey Ministries International that show case instruction from NHL players and retired NHL players and coaches. They have had Glenn Wesley, RBA, and now Jacoob Slavin at the Raleigh camp. I love seeing the sport I played, coach, and love continue to grow in this area. Now if we can get a better morning spots show instead of ESPN morning show it would be perfect.

Hockey belongs anywhere. Doesn't matter the climate, demographics or anything! Yes it will face more challenges but when was something that came easy ever feel so good? Hockey has to work 100x harder than the NBA, MLN AND NFL as well with soccer to be successful...and when 85,000+ people from Texas and Tennessee fill a football stadium to watch....just beautiful.

IDK about jerks but it is a really cheesy gimmick that makes hockey seem like a 2nd rate sport. If they have fun cool but they also earn criticism. I'm sure some will say I'm wrong but if I am ask yourself this. The canes do their stupid little celebrations when they win. Currently they are a winning team, one of the best in the league. Tell me if their true fan base are going to to love these stupid celebrations when they are only having 30 win seasons? Tell me that's going to boost the morale of players when they are only winning 1 out of 4 games? You know as well as I do that stupid celebration crap is NOT going to go over very well.

They don’t do the skits & bowling/Thor/etc anymore. Just the circle & boom-boom-CLAP with the entire stands. They wait until after they congratulate the goalie, so the guys from the other team are already off the ice, & they usually aren’t doing it on the road, so nothing showboaty or antagonistic about it this way. Just a way to celebrate with the fans.
@moappleseider1699

@@RudeboyGroot Cool and that's all good. But it was pretty stupid when they were doing all that other stuff. Too much of a gimmick. Again though, most fan bases wouldn't be happy with any of it if they were losing most of their games and not making the playoffs year after year.
@RudeboyGroot
2 жыл бұрын
@@moappleseider1699 I agree with you based on what the video shows. I would cringe sometimes when they’d do it on the road that first season, or worry if they went over the top what would happen if that team beat us the next time. That’s why I was just clarifying to people who don’t watch the Canes much that it isn’t the same anymore. It’s just the clapping circle part now. At first it did what Williams said: fired up a fan base that was used to losing. And then Cherry’s comments brought everyone even more together like a drill instructor in boot camp. I think the team realized pretty quickly that it might go too far; they dialed it way back for playoffs that first year & ever since. I like how it is now. It’s more sustainable & not likely to piss people off or look silly during a rough patch. To me, it just feels like a simple post-game salute of team & fans to each other now! Enjoy the rest of the season🍻

You have to understand that market. Raleigh is central to 4 major Universities Duke, UNC, NC State, and Wake Forest in addition to many other smaller universities. You add all the tech jobs in the area with Red Hat, Cisco, SaaS, IBM and soon to be the second HQ for Apple... It's an extremely young market so you have to invite those young somewhat immature fans by going against the norm and partying!
