So here is my favorite “Christmas” song but this is the entire story of the Gospel from Incarnation to Coronation!
Benjamin Russell Hanby (July 22, 1833 - March 16, 1867), was an American composer, educator, and pastor who wrote approximately 80 songs. The most famous are "Darling Nelly Gray", the Christmas song "Up on the House Top", and the hymn "Who Is He In Yonder Stall?".
In 1864, Hanby was minister of a church in New Paris, Ohio, but by Christmas 1864, he was no longer working as a pastor, but operating a singing school in New Paris. He composed "Up On The Housetop" as a Christmas sing-along. It was originally titled Santa Claus. The following year, Chicago publisher George Frederick Root published "Up On The Housetop" and brought Hanby to Chicago to pursue other publishing ventures. However, two years later he wrote one of the most theologically rich hymns for the Christmas season.
Who is He in yonder stall,
At whose feet the shepherds fall?
Who is He in deep distress,
Fasting in the wilderness?
Refrain:
'Tis the Lord! O wondrous story!
'Tis the Lord! the King of glory!
At His feet we humbly fall,
Crown Him! Crown Him, Lord of all!
Who is He the people bless
For His words of gentleness?
Who is He to whom they bring
All the sick and sorrowing?
[Refrain]
Who is He that stands and weeps
At the grave where Lazarus sleeps?
Who is He the gath'ring throng
Greet with loud triumphant song?
[Refrain]
Lo! at midnight, who is He
Prays in dark Gethsemane?
Who is He on yonder tree,
Dies in grief and agony?
[Refrain]
Who is He that from the grave
Comes to heal and help and save?
Who is He that from His throne
Rules through all the world alone?
[Refrain]
What a dilemma do you see it? Here is a minister who wrote this great hymn with such theology, but just two years before he wrote a secular song celebrating Santa Claus. Why was no one rallying for an outcry? Simple because they DID NOT CARE. It didn't take away from Hanby's character nor did it exemplify that he was celebrating one theme and not the other. Hanby is proof that Christmas traditions can coexist simultaneously.
