@peter that makes no sense, not all countries are sunny and windy, nor they have volcanoes to produce geothermal energy. If any country wants to switch from fosil fuel to renewables it must harvest its renewable resources, it's stupid to exclude hydropower l.
@AnalystPrime
4 жыл бұрын
Hydropower has the problem that if your country has a suitable location for it, it is most likely either in use already or protected. No or minimal chance of growth, so it makes the numbers look misleading. Now if we start building more wave/tidal power, that does need to be included. It is also rather not-green compared to others. You need to dam a river valley or dig a reservoir, destroying whatever forest habitat, local villages and natural beauty were there, risk creating mudslides or floods, block fish and boats from traveling the river, and the huge amount of concrete and other materials needed don't exactly help either. On the plus side you might get some tourists fishing in the reservoir, not exactly a fair trade.
@brick1907
4 жыл бұрын
The difference is that hydro is dispatchable upon request, unlike variable sources like wind and solar. In other words it's very easy to have a lot of renewable electricity if you have the hydro resources but much more difficult from other renewable sources
@brick1907
4 жыл бұрын
If you take Ireland for example, it has all of it's hydro resources exploited (as it's very easy and cheap to) but only amounts to 3% of electricity. Ireland would love to be able to have more hydro resources as its cheaper and far more reliable than the wind farms they are building en masse
@AnalystPrime
4 жыл бұрын
@@brick1907 That definitely helps keeping it in the game, but either you have a steadily flowing river and would like to use it, meaning you probably run pretty close to100% output and don't have anything to dispatch on request; or you keep some production in reserve for when needed, meaning unless you are paid for that untapped amount you lose money and if you are it raises the general price per kWh. Or your river is not a steady and reliable source of energy and you are running a pumped hydro energy storage. I don't think storage should be counted as renewable energy PRODUCTION, whether the original energy was produced with renewables or not.

From what I have read such installations could actually produce a small surplus. actually not a bad idea, using human effort to power up, a incentive to generate energy and strengthen body at the same time. Body builders get jacked and paid for their pumping according to how much unit they generate. There should be energy center gyms like that which support punching, kicking, lifting, jumping etc and convert it into energy. people can set up certain units as their goal...Finally Gymming will become a attractive job and coaches will be even more necessary to optimize the energy generation. Originally from Brazil lived in NAPA for 20 years now but still go back frequently. I was surprised to see that they use ethanol(alcohol )and is or at least was the global leader of alternative fuel! It’s a shame we don’t have that here
@tonysu8860
3 жыл бұрын
We have plenty of ethanol but I think a generally lower mixture in the USA. E85 which is mostly ethanol is available in some places but not everywhere, which has over 110 octane (compared to 93 octane premium gasoline). It's hard to calculate ethanol's true benefit in the USA... We make our ethanol from corn (I think Brazil makes theirs from sugar beets) which as a dual effect of less corn for human consumption and feedstock, and whether the petroleum products that are typically used to grow and deliver the processed corn is tryly a net benefit. Government subsidies also muddy the picture... subsidies may be essential to getting production up sufficiently to make economic sense for building the related infrastructure Additionally, only cars manufactured after 2007 can take E85 gas without modifications. Any earlier model cars need to invest in a "kit" that can cost in the neighborhood of about $700 to replace the fuel injectors, install a special ethanol sensor and reprogram the car's computer. Although I suppose it's YMMV on an individual basis, it should also be recognized that ethanol has a high water component which might affect some car systems, and despite the very high octane actually results in a much lower net miles per gallon... So it looks like E85 is priced at the pump very low so as not to be not a poorer deal than regular unleaded gas on cost per mile driven.
@tonysu8860
3 жыл бұрын
Forgot to add... Burning ethanol in your vehicle does not lessen emissions that are damaging to climate change but it does mean not burning a resource (petroleum) that could arguably be used in a better way (eg plastics) instead of simply burning it up.

Driving a 2-3 ton vehicle to the store to fetch a loaf of bread is considered normal. If you drive posted speed limits on 2 lane roads chances are a oversized pickup truck will come up behind and tailgate urging you to drive faster. Headlights at night are so bright too - almost fry one's retinas. I make all effort to limit driving miles as much as possible by getting everything done in one trip when possible. I remember the Arab oil embargo of 1973-1974 very well in that gasoline supplies are indeed finite. We are once again on that wasteful track to yet another "energy crisis."

This video and rankings are incredibly misleading. First of all, Biomass is NOT renewable energy. The process literally involve burning of plants, crops, wood, tree, bio waste to generate electricity, which obviously generate tons of CO2 and other gases that's bad for environmental. Also, I don't know why they keep trying to exclude hydro power in most of the ranking. Hydropower is one of the cleanest form of renewal energy along with solar and wind power. Excluding hydro intentional is just insane. In addition, there is absolutely no way that the world is at 25% with renewable energy. If they exclude biomass, the real number is less than 10%.
@leoman5571
4 жыл бұрын
Biomass is actually carbon neutral. The trees or plants that are being burnt for energy generation release the same amount of CO2 that they stored while growing. So in their time period (~1-20 years) they dont add any CO2 to the atmosphere. In a way thats the same for coal and oil, only that they stored the CO2 for hundreds of thousands of years which makes their ability to store CO2 irrelevant for climate change and humanity.

I love renewables along with thought leaders like Lovins, McDonough and Jacobson. We also need to grow global renewables 5 times faster than we are presently. However, I have a real question: When it is super cold like -25 and -35 C as it was on the Canadian prairies for the past week renewables electricity generation share shrank to basically zero. Will geothermal, transmitting outside hydro, grid batteries, bidirectional electric vehicles along with biogas, high insulation and high efficiency do the job? Or do we keep fossil fuel plants, namely natural gas plants, operational for back up emergencies?

There Is No Shortage of Energy; There Is Shortage of Normalcy Despite increased production of energy from renewable sources, and despite the slowdown in car manufacturing, oil prices are skyrocketing. Even though fewer power plants still burn coal, coal prices are skyrocketing, as well. Natural gas prices, too, are going through the roof, and energy demand seems to outpace supply in every country and in every form of energy. Have Earth’s energy sources dwindled so drastically in a matter of months? The answer is a resounding “No!” There is no shortage of energy; there is a serious shortage of normalcy in human relations. I hope the current crisis will put some sense into humanity’s insane consumption. The energy crunch indicates that we are over consuming. We are producing too much, throwing the excess production to the trash, polluting the ground, the air, and the water, and then we are complaining that we do not have enough. It is about as sane as killing one’s parents and then pleading for the court’s mercy because I’ve recently been orphaned. It is time we reconsider everything we produce-how we divide production, profits, and goods, which services are necessary and which are redundant, and most importantly, how we treat one another. The goal of this process should be clear to everyone: survival. There is no ulterior motive, no attempt to dominate or deprive anyone of power or wealth. It is simply that reality is forcing us to take all of humanity and the entire planet into consideration. If we don’t, our entire civilization will collapse like a deck of cards. Since we still do not understand it and insist on running things the way we have always been running them-through power games-I anticipate a very cold and gloomy winter for the northern hemisphere. The energy crunch will leave many in dark and cold houses; there will be no gas for cars, and renewable energy will not replace traditional sources since there will be little sun during the winter. I hope that at least, it will make us rethink our values. If it doesn’t, next summer will be even worse than the awful summer that just ended. I know that many people are counting on the promise of renewable energy to solve the energy problems of humanity. I think they are mistaken. There is plenty of energy, far more than we really need. We could cut emissions by at least half tomorrow. But the more we have, the hungrier we become, so our thirst for energy will never be satiated, and we will never stop exploiting the planet or each other until we reeducate ourselves and start being humane toward each other. We have been behaving like spoiled brats whose parents buy them whatever they want. Now, our parents have run out of money and our childhood is over. It is time for us to mature and conduct ourselves like responsible adults, caring for all of humanity the way a mother cares for her entire family. If we think like a family, we will achieve normalcy.

Capacity(measured in W, a unit of power) isn't equal to generation(measured in Wh, a unit of energy). The capacity is the maximum output of electricity that a generator can produce under ideal conditions, meanwhile generation refers to the amount of electricity that IS produced over a specific period of time. So, according to the latest numbers from India, RES(renewable energy sources) account for 36 percent of the total power capacity while only 20 percent of the actual energy generation, which means that almost half of the installed RES capacity remains unrealised in India, when compared to the other sources of energy, much like most other spheres in India, where potential and capacity remains, but doesn't get realised or generated. Therefore, if India ranks 4th on your list, it doesn't really mean much. If anything, countries should be ranked based on generation.
