Jesus has called us to love God with all we are, and to love our neighbors as we love ourselves, but who is my neighbor? In Luke 10 an expert in the law asks Jesus the same question, and Jesus answers with one of his most famous parables.
A parable is an allegory that teaches a deeper truth about God and His kingdom. In the parable of the “Good Samaritan” Jesus teaches us that in God’s kingdom our neighbor may be the person who is most unlike us, even someone we want to dislike.
Loving your neighbor isn’t just about what you do on the outside, it’s primarily about who you are becoming on the inside. That’s what makes Jesus’ way of neighbor-love possible.
Jesus asked, “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”
