😢This song has SAVED so many lives....including mine...in so many dark and hopeless times.💔 It has been used a lot in suicide awareness campaigns - it's heart-breaking, but somehow gives you hope? Such an important song for so many people.- like the song says Everybody Hurts & some of us almost take that final step. Michael Stipe was a good friend of Kurt Cobain, and was devastated when he committed suicide just a year after this single was released. But as we know, for some people, the PAIN is just too much 🖤 R.E.M. will always be remembered for giving people this timeless saviour. Much love to you from Ireland 💚

Same here. It's weird to me... in a sense it sounds like a corny casio keyboard karaoke type thing. Or even a simple church song that goes on. It has that DNA but the end result is something far more. This song is achingly beautiful and everybody in the world (bar a few psychos) can relate to it. The emotions are just too real. Another odd thing about it is the chords are "major" - they're happy sounding guitar chords actually yet the song is still so devastating thanks to the voice/lyrics.
@darrenbent7601
2 жыл бұрын
@@halfalligator6518 I know. The combination of major cords with melancholic lyrics shouldn't work,.... but it blends so beautifully here. If you just heard the cords on their own, at a quicker pace, with no lyrics involved, it would make quite a joyful tune. That is why this song is so iconic, the pure contrast in style.

Lead singer/songwriter is Michael Stipes. He's from Athens Georgia and was one of Kurt Cobains(Nirvana), best friends. This came out around the time Kurt committed suicide. 2 weeks later my first husband committed suicide too. This song has such a special meaning to me, and I've chosen it for my funeral

Thanks Adogg! Most of this song was written by R.E.M. drummer Bill Berry.This is an anti-suicide song. Berry wanted to reach out to people who felt they had no hope. On many R.E.M. songs, Michael Stipe purposefully sings indecipherably. He sang very clearly on this one though, because he didn't want his message getting lost. Michael noted on a 2011 greatest hits album; "I don't remember singing it but I still kind of can't believe my voice is on this recording. It's very pure. This song instantly belonged to everyone except us, and that honestly means the world to me." The music video was filmed on Interstate 10 in San Antonio, Texas, and won four MTV Video Music Awards: Breakthrough Video, Best Direction, Best Editing and Best Cinematography. Important song with a timeless message that will always, relevantly, remind us, to hold on; we are absolutely, connected, as humans, & all feel this identical & temporary emotion/feeling! But always hold on & take comfort in your friends. #Feelings change! Don't make permanent decisions based upon a temporary feeling!#

This is one of the most heart wrenching songs, with the most powerful message, that when you really feel you cannot go on any longer, just hang on, there is light around the corner 💕💕💕 REM did this song in response to Michael hearing of teenage suicides were on the rise, and this deeply bothered him.......

R.E.M. outside of this group generally refers to Rapid Eye Movement, which is the stage of sleep in which you dream, and the parts of the nervous system that can be healed repair themselves. If you go too long without REM sleep, your brain can and does deteriorate rapidly. I rather dig the possibility that the group has named themselves for a form of restoration and healing.

They achieved their greatest success in the early 90s with two HUGE back-to-back albums, Out of Time and Automatic for the People. Near the end, the lyrics are “you’re not alone.” For the band, you say it as the letters R.E.M. They are best heard live. They had 15 studio albums, and there are live albums, too.
