The new ixalan was exploring and developing the plane more thoroughly, it wasnt a niche story backdrop like this new ravnica seems to be. Richard, at the risk of being pedantic, it's because there's more knowledge over time than there was in ancient (scholars') times. Science used to encompass nearly everything, but we as humanity learned more and more so it's impossible for any one person to master all. Academia had to specialize. I'm with you 100% by the way, just learn forever. I work with a lot of researchers and unfortunately, it's "publish or die" as they say. Crim be like: "Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta. Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral. EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE

The off-kilter approach to a known plane is another example of how 3 set blocks make for a better experience overall. The concept of slivers overrunning Ikoria seems really cool but it sucks as 1 set. In a 3 set block you can see the progression from "Ikoria big monsters" to "Ikoria something isn't quite right, what are these pointy snakes?" To "Ikoria, holy fuck slivers everywhere" and it would be compelling

Also, if you look at the standard metagame page on MTGGoldfish, of the top 5 decks, only 1 is an automatic deck(the poison deck). The rest are either ramp or mid range, neither of which are auto decks at all. What he might mean are decks that have a ton of cards that if unanswered, run away with the game within 1-2 turns. That I agree should not be the case.

43:54 I had a guy on here telling me it always has been this way but he was obviously wrong. Ever since energy.deck, the golgari midrange explore.deck, the disastrous adventure deck, it's sooooooo boring. Core sets didn't have that problem. And lately, it's parasitic mechanic o'clock. But for some reason, they don't support them enough in the set to make it worthwhile. Have you tried exploring in standard? Enjoy your deck made with approximately 60-70% of draft shaft and that green sentinel that makes a map token. Or descent, which is just garbage. But hey they fixed cascade! /s Same applies to the last eldraine, the adventures were mostly garbage besides the virtues, and the only "real" adventures payoff is in temur meaning you'd have to go 5 colors to run the only 2 useful virtues. It's like they know it has been going on for a while so they get really careful not to break standard, but in doing so sets nowadays feel like special thematic sets based on the rulings of mtg instead of real MTG sets and they completely overlook the "older" formats and break them, one infinite combo at a time, one value engine that looks trash at a time. I want good rares and mythics that do not require a build around or are self-contained, with interesting mechanics/twists. Not what we've been getting in the last couple of sets. More Avacyns/balefire dragons, less Beluna Grandsqualls. @MtgGoldfish Podcast, thoughts?
