Tariffs are the wrong way to solve the trade deficit because it harms the benefit of comparative advantage that increases productivity and wealth. But America’s trade deficit has gone on for over 50 years, which is not supposed to happen. Normally, countries with sustained trade deficits should see their currencies weaken, while those with trade surpluses should see their currencies strengthen. The consequence should be a self-correcting system. The dollar should have weakened, making American goods more competitive and thereby driving down the trade deficit. But instead the dollar stays strong by selling government debt so that Congress can spend more. American farmers and manufacturers have paid the price for the national debt. America needs to stop spending money it doesn’t have and allow the dollar to weaken so that farmers and rust belt manufacturers can thrive again.

This simple answer not as complicated as some thinks. If an economy is still expanding during high interest rates then it’s being managed properly. For having low interest rate and modestly growing economy says Trump didn’t grow the economy only growing financial sector at best. Powell shut down the housing market sector in order to catch inflation. That’s over 10 percent of economy. Trump only grew financial sector without growing Main Street.

Economic data going back to the 1960s show clearly US economy (measured in terms of GDP growth, employment, standard of living, etc.) consistently performs better (i.e., higher growth, lower unemployment, etc.) under Democratic administrations than Republican ones. Even stocks market performs better under Democratic presidents. This seemingly strange but true observation is no accident: cutting taxes to favor disproportionately the top 0.1-1.0% at the expense of the working middle class does harm to the economy as it chokes consumption. Warren Buffett said it best: money is like manure, the more it is spread around the better it works for everyone (paraphrasing).
