After all, while Russia had cut the pipeline for a while it was still right there, and while the EU was organizing to completely phase out Russian gas, the fact the line was there meant that there was a way to just bow down and get the easy way out. You spend a lot of time on the fact that partisan groups and hard-line groups from Russia can just do it. Anything is possible. And you talk about Putin’s motivation to do it. This isn’t an easy thing to do. If somebody gets caught and can be traced to Russia, it’s an Article 4 response atleast. You make a comment that if the USA was involved in destroying the pipeline of a nato ally, it’s a confounding decision. The USA and UK have easy access to NATO waters. They aren’t risking anything, and Germany wont say anything if they find out who it is. It would be a lot bigger deal if Russia did do it.

I think the US and/or UK did it. Not spamming russian propaganda here nor supporting russia in any ways! But there are 4 reasons why I think the US may be responsible for that sabotage: 1.) Russia needed the pipelines in order to keep their fingers at the buttons. I know they were able to control the gas prices in europe and abuse their responsibility in order to raise unrest in the population of europe, but only by being able to turn the gas tap on and off as they wished. As this is not possible anymore, I guess russia was in a better tactical position when northstream 1 and 2 were still active. 2.) The US knew this, and alwas (rightfully) claimed that giving russia that kind of power over the sake of europes economy canno be tolerated. As shown in the video, President Biden said they won't accept this and would be able to terminate northstream one way or another. When europe realised their gas market is choked by putin, I guess many countries didn't raise their voices when the US proposed this kind of 'termination' of north stream. 3.) Many don't know this but those 3 explosions happened between the shores of poland and sweden, two of them even close to the shores of denmark and germany. This region is highly frequented and observated by NATO vessels and usually avoided by russian ships. Radar and other surveillance would have exposed any russian ship in that area immediately. As the detonations (as far as I know!) happened in a timespan of several hours, I can't think of anyone not noticing the first detonation and thus letting the third explosion even happen. 4.) The way western and especially german media is (not) reporting about this issue is very strange. I remember in german television when everyone talked about, some people pointed their fingers at russia but some days later, nobody wastalking about it anymore. It feels like this case was closed by saying it was sabotage without even naming further details. I could imagine if there were evidence that claimed russia to be responsible, there would still be talk shows of politicians talking about a 'ruthless agression'. But no media is talking about it. I'm not saying 'the media is paid by the elite bla bla bla', and I'm aware this theory somewhat sounds like a conspiracy theory, but the motivations for a sabotage and the way it was dealt with in the media clearly speaks for the US 'terminating' Northstream. I'm actually happy that it happened lol

The Polish PiS government was/is the most outspoken critic of the Nordstream pipelines. Despite Germany and Poland both being members of the EU and NATO and being closely connected economically, the relations are tense over a number of issues: Nordstream 1 & 2 and Germany's Russia policy in the last 20 years in general, new Polish demand for WW2 reparations which Germany claims were settled decades ago, the EU's Ukraine and Russia policies since 2014, all the Victor Orban and Hungary stuff, Poland's judiciary reform and rule of law in the EU and many more issues in the EU's foreign and domestic policies in general. They wouldn't be a prime subject and if they become a suspect they just need plausible deniability to fend off any consequences. Even if undoubtedly discovered (very unlikely) since Poland is a member of EU and NATO Germany's possibilities to sanction them would be very limited if they have any at all. Also since most EU and NATO members share Poland's critical stance towards Nordstream there would never be any kind of majority in the EU against them in this issue. The destruction of Nordstream also increased the importance of the Yamal pipeline through Poland and the new Baltic Pipe and increased the profits for the Polish state controlled gas company running them. It's a win-win-win for Poland: Germany becomes more steadfast and less shaky regarding Ukraine, give Germany a wipe, Nordstream dealt with, Poland's own strategic positions regarding gaspipelines secured, immediate financial gains. Considering all these gains, the Northstream sabotage would be quite easy to pull off for Poland on their doorstep with little risk of discovery.

Great analysis. My wife and I have been debating the Russian theory. While I don't put anything past the Russians at this point, I made the point that it didn't make much sense since Russia already controlled whether the gas flowed or not, and that by physically crippling the pipes they lose their most powerful bargaining chip just before the winter when it would potentially become most valuable. William's discussion of how this could make sense based on internal Russian politics helps me see why it might "make sense", at least to a given faction.

Something overlooked in this video's analysis is that damaging the pipeline will take active effort to fix. Assuming the fix will take time or must be done quickly, if Europe tries to get the pipeline fixed, that tells Putin that Europe really needs the gas, and has just been hoping that Russia caves in before the problem becomes severe. On the other hand, if Europe doesn't make any effort to get the pipeline fixed, it means they're confident that they can get through the winter without Russian gas. Basically, this means that we find out if Russian gas coercion is effective in November instead of February. If it is, Europe stops supporting Ukraine soon. If not, Putin knows that the support is likely to go on indefinitely, and can make plans accounting for his weaker position.

Was it clear enough that the massive number of satellites currently looking down on this region would have been able to see the boat, see where it came from, where it went? I suppose divers could have exited a submarine, but my guess is that submarines are heavily monitored and tracked in these waters.

Russia has specialised ships that can access pipelines and cables on the sea floor, using remotely operated subs. Wether it's hacking into the Atlantic internet cable or deploying a remotely detonated explosive on a pipeline, both are well within the capabilities of the Russians.
@Phlosioneer

It’s not too hard to imagine these explosives were placed days or weeks ago; and probably at night, and probably with running lights off. That’s a lot of factors weighing against the usefulness of satellite imagery here.

1) There could have been a remote detonated explosive device. If so it could have been sitting there for months. 2) Submarines and autonomous underwater vehicles are extremely hard to track. A Second reason being the US wanting to make sure, Germany will now buy American Gas not Russian one and will do so even after the War. Actual German here, what the fuck are you on about? We are already economically dependent on the U.S. to a degree that they could simply force us to shut down the pipes once the (at the time already nearly finished) LnG Terminals came online, and besides, what benefit would they gain from pushing us further from Russia? The optimal world for the Russians involves a partition of Poland along with Germany, the diplomatic feelers for which were turned down the instant they came up; from the Russian perspective, we are already their enemy as an implication of denying their long-standing hopes. In addition, the potential costs of such an action, a loss of an important ally, and their primary forward logistical HUB, far outweigh the singular benefit you brought up three times. Sabotaging a pipeline under the North Sea in 4 places is well beyond the capacity of a small organization. It was either government-sponsored or done by a pipeline or oil-platform services company. A pipeline or oil-platform services company might have done it on contract, but that would be so incredibly risky for them. And it would be beyond the capacity of a single rogue employee or pair of rogue employees. I found your assessment fatally flawed. You started with the premise of mine placement as the means of destruction of the Nord Stream pipes. This is not what mines do or are built for. The destruction of objects on the seabed is far more technically difficult than stated. Due to the attributes of water and its non-compressibility, charges would have to be placed upon the pipes - close would not do the job. Finding these structures on the seabed would be beyond the scope and design of a torpedo. The depths of the pipes where the sabotage took place exceed the capabilities of free diving. Deep sea diving requires mother ships and would thus leave a trail easily followed by satellites. This leaves submersibles. Most submersibles capable of planting explosive charges at that depth also require mother ships. This leaves the highly exotic and pricy options of military forces and there are precious few countries that have military submarines with the capability to launch and support an ocean bed excursion with either submersibles or divers. This limits the suspect pool to just a handful of players. The Russians, U.S., and U.K. for sure, and lesser possibilities of the Swedes, Germans, and the French. My guess is that right now, the Swedes will have the best clue who did it because they have the best military seabed acoustic detection network in the Baltic. I'm sure they're frantically reviewing their recordings of the last month.

Don't think Russia thinks like us. The project was dead due to the war in Ukraine. A perfectly good reason, would be to avoid admitting that Putins war ruined the costly and profitable deals with the west. Since it was dead anyway - why not blow it and blame other - and avoid being the guilty yourself of a ruined project and export? Maybe not - but also maybe. A big mistake in the west is to believe that russians have the same logic and reasoning as us.

I would add a hint that one team carried out this attack. Assume for a moment that they had two identical packages of explosives and timers (set to the same delay) to do the damage. The team installs the first bomb and, as its last step, starts the timer. They then move on to the second site, repeating the process, again setting the timer as their last step. Their travel time plus a single installation time comes down to that seventeen hours. They wouldn't want the delay to be longer than that, because the added time would allow measures to be taken to catch them. And of course that seventeen hours says nothing about how long before the bombs were set. It could be hours, days or even weeks. The latter could be a factor in determining who did this. The various motivations now say little about those existing weeks ago before the tide had clearly turned in favor of Ukraine.

Consider possibility, that the mines were planted long in advance - a month, 3 months, or 6 months. It is unlikely that the pipes were monitored underwater by, say, Gazprom. So, the mines might be waiting for a remote signal to come, when a situation demands.

The idea of planting the bombs with a synchronized timer is a good idea. Then the question becomes, how long in advance did they plant the bombs? And the ancillary question, why at these two places? Plus, there's bound to be shutoff valves at various points in the pipeline, so as to accomodate genuine accidents.

There is such a thing as pipeline inspection robots. They travel inside the pipeline to inspect for damage. It would be pretty simple to strap a bomb to one and detonate it at exactly the spot you wanted. It has the advantage of not needing a boat, or divers, which could be spotted by any passing ship. The only thing you would need is access to one end of the pipeline.

Pipes don't sit there for decades without maintenance. divers and submersibles go down to do that. Literally anyone, non-state actors included with a bit of money can. There are pipeline inspection tools (PIG). The gas needs to be flowing in the pipeline to provide motive force for the PIG to travel. The pressure restriction of the PIG would be identified on the computer analysis software used by the operating company (Nord Stream) to monitor for any leaks along the pipeline. If no gas was flowing at the time of the explosion it would mean the pig would have been lunched some time before the explosion. As Nord Stream II pipeline had only been pressurised and full flow of gas had not been started (to the best of reports available in media), this would mean it impossible for a PIG strapped with explosives to be the method. Forensic inspection of the damage of the pipeline might be able to provide evidence of whether the explosion caused by a strap on device to the concrete lined outer parts of the pipeline or not. Thos information has not been released as far as I know.

Suspect number 1 is the USA. The only one country that actually benefits from this situation and the one not losing anything, unless discovered. This last possibility is extremely unlikely in the short term, though. Of course if it is somehow demonstrated that America was behind this sabotage, the confontation with Russia would grow exponentially higher, but then who in the West would really expose and stand by the accusation of US involvement? Is it realistic to expect open accusation nowadays by current regimes in Europe from say, Denmark, Sweden, or even Germany in case the whole thing was CIA's job? And if it is only Russia asserting American culpability/telling the truth in this particular situation, maybe supported by some other Russian ally (Iran, North Korea or even China), who in the West would take it seriously? It would be dismissed in the West as Russian propaganda anyway. And in this scenario, it doesn't matter who exactly performed the operation, it would have been planned, coordinated and facilitated by the CIA and American capabilities, not necessarily by citizens of the US, could be it Germans, Ukrainians, etc. Suspect number 2 as a less likely candidate is Russia, mainly for reasons already mentioned in this video. The remaining hypotheses are, frankly speaking, just utter bullshit. There are no plausible candidates here, other than USA and Russia. Time will (maybe) tell, but probably not in the near future.

Nearly all subsea pipelines have a maintenance plan in case a small or large leak occurs (eg damage from ship anchor) and all pipeline companies have access to special tools (dependent on pipeline diameter etc) and spare lengths of pipe to repair any damage. It is important to repair the damaged section and flush the pipeline of seawater in a limited time period to avoid long term damage to the pipeline. Any who dun it theory, would need to factor in if a repair is underway and if not, which parties are stopping the repair.

In approximately 20 years, Germany and likely many other EU countries will be phasing out carbon emitting fuels entirely thus closing the door to Russian exports. At that point, Russia will be desperate to find a new buyer and China will happily accept rather than the relatively strong position Russia holds right now. Both Russia and China will begin working on building the necessary infrastructure likely very soon regardless. There's simply no need or benefit for them to have any involvement.

The Chinese government also benefits greatly from this escalation. Destabilization of the Western Alliance by spreading doubt over American Involvement, a further weakened economic bond between EU and Russia when the war is over, growing dependency of Russia from China and a high bargain lever on prices for russian gas. There is the risk of getting involved in the conflict, but it looks like noone is willing to open another front with china at the moment over a pipeline. So it'd be small investment in a "What is bad for my enemies ist good for me" situation. Also thed have the technologie to do it as a stealth operation. If reports will show that it was a precission strike rather than a hit-or-miss-seemine operation I would put china as #2 on the suspect list. On #1 I'd still have Poland and USA. Militarily they often operate closely. Both would do it for the same reason: German politics would have very likely buckled over widespread energy protests in the winter and in a result the (not particularily strong) goverment could have reduced the sanctions. I have heard the opposite of what you wrote. The explosives needed were not very large because water apparently multiplies the destructive force. But more importantly, the area is closely monitored by naval vessels, and also some form of electronic underwater monitoring (I am not expert enough to know about this). But that means it would have to be relatively sophisticated getting into the area without being detected. It is very doubtful partisans would be able to do it, and I doubt an oligarch would have the ability to round up an underwater naval military team capable of something like this without explicit approval from the Kremlin. But I do think that Russia is responsible. No single Nato mameber would dare, the consequences of doing it without approval by the rest of nato would be economic suicide. I doubt even the Americans would dare do that, it's just an alliance killer for any nation who does.
