Back in 1989, I worked on the celebrations for the 800th anniversary of the mayoralty of London. (This included the earlier mayors as well as Lord Mayors, the first being Henry Fitz-Ailwyn in 1189). As you can imagine, Wittington played a part. When he died, he left everything to the Charity of Sir Richard Wittington, administered by the Mercers. The charity does not raise funds. Instead, they have invested and reinvested the money left to them by Wittington. They are still going, and every year, Wittington's fortune, and the interest and dividends it earns, pays for arms houses, grants, and other projects. Nearly six hundred years after his death, he is still helping the poor. Not bad going that!

Baader-Meinhof effect: Just a day or two ago, I saw a video about random sights around London that included the shrubbery of Dick Whittington's cat, and the narrator didn't explain the reference (presumably because he assumed everyone would get it). I wondered about it, but didn't get around to googling it, and then along comes Jago to explain it. :) Also, the thing about the streets of London reminded me of another joke from long ago. In the opening credits of _Late Night with David Letterman_ (way back when he was on NBC), they used to have a different description of New York City in the opening credits narration every night. My favorite was, "From New York, where the streets are paved with gold, and they fill your teeth with asphalt."

I find it interesting that so many cats seem to be such big fans of Sir Issac Newton - even re-enacting his Gravity experiments by pushing things off of shelves and tables - and his Optics experiments, by swatting at, and generally reacting to things we humans can't see... I sometimes tell my cat that Sir Issac was even more interested in Alchemy, at which point she might go into her litter box... I can't say for sure if what she leaves me there is actually Philosophers Stone - but good kitty for trying!

Note bene: The Bow Bells are not in the suburb of Bow, but in the church of St. Mary le Bow, Cheapside, which is right in the middle of the City of London. (The largest of these bells being the famous Great Bell of Bow.) I noticed in your video about the four abandoned stations in Bow that there was a pub there called The Bow Bells, which rather surprised me. As an interesting and useless fact, the 12 bells currently at Cheapside are each inscribed with a verse from the Book of Psalms. The first letter of each inscription forms an acrostic which spells 'D Whittington'.

by some accounts the "cat" was actually a person, one of Whittington's close men, who was good at catching "rats" (pretty much what we would term ASBO's later) in the days well before state police, he was known to make London's markets a much safer place for the small merchant (something for which many small tradesmen of London were very grateful) PS: the king of Morocco is a much later embellishment, possibly the original story had the name of the Tea-Merchant "Martin Du L'roque" of The Fangersey, but that is just a theory.

There should have been another permanent reminder of Dick Whittington. The planned Northern Heights scheme (1935) was only partly carried out by London Underground. Highgate Station was meant to become a major interchange on the network, and the high level platforms (still there today, on what had been the Finsbury Park - Alexandra Palace steam railway, closed in 1954, but trackless and dilapidated) were meant to have been electrified. Additionally, on top of the long concrete escalator section, there should have been a statue of Dick Whittington plus cat. As the major scheme was abandoned, along with its abandonment went the proposed artwork.

If you don’t believe me, check it out at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, where there is a model of such a craft. It was suggested that this may have been the origin of the cat in the Dick Whittington story.

I do know the true story as I researched is sometime ago. There is the story of a young man who goes to London to seek his fortune. The streets are paved with gold, he is told. All you have to do to make your fortune is pick it up. So off he goes to London and arrives late in the evening. Looking around and thinking of finding lodgings for the night his sees on the ground a shiny gold coin. So it is true, he thought. The streets are paved with gold and all I have to do to earn my fortune is pick it up, which he does. Looking at the coin and thinking about the lateness of the hour he throws the gold coining on the floor and says to himself I'll start work in the morning.

Thank you for this video, which I saw on Christmas Day, thanks to being at 174 East, on a hot day in Summer, thanks to being at 36 South: your audience is widespread. One thing you should have added about panto is that the male lead is called the Principal Boy, who is always played by a woman (or was always played by a woman, it may have changed now). At the crucial point in the story, the Principal Boy expresses his/her resolution to stop moping and get with the upbeat plot by slapping his/her thigh, resoundingly. For this to be theatrically effective, a specific phenotype is a casting requirement. Also to be mentioned is that the panto is a fine example of the double address of popular entertainment. Kids are taken by their parents, so there is much audience involvement for the littlies; for the parents, the jokes are not merely corny, but contain as much filthy innuendo as the show can get away with. Of course, what with social media and everything, it is probably almost impossible now to make such cracks and be sure they will sail over the heads of the pre-pubescents. I have not seen a panto in decades, alas, but I remember it as being as gender-destabilising a performance as any of Shakespeare's comedies. Also, love your work.

Merry Christmas . I always feel like there is another fact just waiting to be revealed, and yet, there is always more.
