Nice video. :) :) Regarding how happy or unhappy Eol and Aredhel's marriage was, it's worth pointing out, I believe Tolkien's legendarium says that raping an elf basically causes their body to waste away and their spirit to depart frombeing sexually taken unwillingly. Eol is a pretty fascinating character, and I feel his story is meant to be a tragedy. From this video, I think of film-Thranduil when trying to imagine what the character of flawed elves, particularly in the First Age, would be like. I imagine Eol is definitely worse than Thranduil, though I'm not sure if he's as bad as Feanor considering how reckless some of Feanor's acts like the oath to find the Silmarils were. Overall, regarding the flaws of some of the early elves like Eol's possessiveness and spite and Feanor's stubbornness and pride, I feel they were so glaring and prominent because in those elves' days, such flaws and their consequences were coming out for the first time and had yet to be ingrained in cautionary learning and tales if that makes sense. Regarding whether or not I have any sympathy for Eol: I think he was indeed too controlling for demanding Aredhel shun the light, even if I at first had sympathy for him wanting to court her and for the losses he suffered that made him hate the Noldor. I would've had more sympathy if he'd been more subtle and less pressing about it with her, and I can at the very least experience a rooting-for-the-empire type delight in reading his morally dubious ways of courting Aredhel unfold. I find it pretty vile of him that he was willing to basically cast Aredhel aside so long as he could forcibly keep Maeglin in their forest home, and for me, he lost any worthiness of a chance at redemption when he rejected Maeglin in his final moments.

While I am not in favor of how he came to have his wife, nor his treatment of his son ; I do understand Eols loathing and hatred of those who have taken land and even his people's lives. Sad he let his anger be the death of him as he couldn't stand being somewhere his wife and son were truly happy. His bitterness get the better of him as he was willing to see his own wife perish and cursing his own son before his untimely demise. I sometimes wonder if it is the sheer arrogance of Elves who even dismisses their own kin if they find them unworthy.

In his lore and well connected to his Christianity Tolkien believes that there is a little bit or a great amount of bad in a good person and that there is a little bit of good or a great amount of good in a bad person. Evil does exist but it is not just pure good people that fight evil it is the mixtures of morality and those virtuous or corrupted and even evil fights evil. The climax of Lord of the Rings was not Frodo conquering evil and destroying the ring it was him claiming the ring for his own, fighting Gollum for its possession before the two stumbled and thus the ring destroyed by Evil's self harming nature

Maehdros and Maglor are really complex, cool and tragic characters too. A bit more developed, since they survived the entire 1st age (and beyond for Maglor). They committed some of most heinous acts with the 3 kinslayings, but also retained a certain Elvish nobility and spirit. They were the quintessential Noldor in a way. Industrious, passionate, powerful, ambitious and dedicated to combatting Morgoth directly (even if for selfish reasons). The Silmarillion totally destroys the impression that Tolkien was all about white hats black hats, heroes don’t die, etc. Nope, almost *all* the heroes die. The death of Thingol was as sudden and capricious as anything Martin wrote IMO. Never mind what a happened to Turin Turambar. Tolkien could do dark and tragic with the best of them.

@lizardlegend42
3 жыл бұрын
@@cartoonistanonymous this is a really interesting thing to ponder! We know of course the stars were made by Nienna, so presumably they're still considered within the outer limits of what's considered the realm of Arda (earth). The morning star is shown to be Eärendil's ship sailing through the sky with a Silmaril at the helm, and I don't *think* Tolkien ever described his travels as leaving arda. So at least in the first and second age the stars are a lot closer than reality, much how like the earth was flat then too and made round at the end of the second age. However then of course after the second age when the earth was made round Valinor is said to have left Arda, but with one straight path left over the sea so the elves who were gifted knowledge if it could still return. So the boundary between Arda and not Arda does exist physically. And Valinor is still a physical place so physical objects can indeed exist outside if Arda. It's not some abstract spirit realm or anything.

Prior to the ability to create high temperature furnaces on earth most weapons were of bronze but a very few were of iron or even steel. Because iron could not be extracted from ore the only way to create steel blades in the bronze age was from meteoric iron. I think he misled Aredhel into the marriage, but he didn't force her. From her perspective, she was totally lost and alone, and she might have seen him as a rescuer at first. Curious of such a different elf than those she had ever known, and impressed with his smithing knowledge and abilities, she probably thought she really liked him at first. But she eventually realized he wasn't who she thought he was, he was abusive and controlling. Anyone who's been in such a relationship knows how hard it can be to see things clearly until you're out of it, so she may have felt like she would have been wrong to leave, until he finally threatened their son. That was the final straw for her.

I don't remember Eöl in the Silmarilion so this is an excellent reminder; thank you! It's interesting that Eöl turned dark without any of Morgoth's persuasion or temptation by beautiful objects, as per many other similar transformations in Tolkien's wider writings. I suppose it's a warning about the dangers of hiding away from the world and what that can do to your character. I think (can't remember off the top of my head) that Eöl's reaction to the beauty of Gondolin is a response we see throughout Tolkien's writings as an indicator of darkness. Boromir, for example, can't find peace in the serenity of Lothlorien because the Ring is eating away at him. Saruman hates the hobbits for living in tranquillity after his defeat. Sauron, arguably, becomes jealous of Numenor's supremacy and destroys it from the inside. The rejection of beauty, peace and goodness, moreover feeling angry, jealous or afraid is a strong indicator, in Tolkien's writings, that a character has fallen too far into darkness. In a more extreme example, orcs and evil beings react with pain and hatred to sources of great light and holiness: the orcs at the Noldor's first landing; the Uruks and Nazgul to Gandalf's light; Morgoth and Ungoliant to the Great Trees; Gollum to lembas and the elven bread.

Yes, Eol was beyond redemption on his own, but he played a vital role in the downfall and defeat of Morgoth. Because of Eol's cruelty and death of himself and Aredhel, his orphaned son Maeglin remained in Gondolin under the tutelage of Turgon. Being 'his fathers son' he had a fiery and negative character streak within him, which for many reasons (Idril was refused to be allowed to be his wife after he served Turgon well, and she despised him, and Tuor married her) festering anger and weakness. Once captured and threatened with torture by Morgoth he told of the location of Gondolin, and Morgoth attacked and slew its inhabitants. It was because of this victory that Morgoth felt his triumph was complete, the greatest Noldor kingdom was destroyed, save for the Havens of Cirdan and the survivors at the Mouths of Sirion, which were ruled by Eärendil, who Morgoth saw as nothing. He became complacent in victory, and bombast in the future campaign. His ego was filled to the point of error. Earendil was able to persuade the Valar to take pity on the Elves directly because of the fall of Gondolin. and Morgoth was defeated by the Valar, etc. You could say that the downfall of Goldolin was that important in the destruction of Morgoth, and Eol raising his son as he did, and killing his wife as he did, played a direct role in Gondolin's ... and Morgoths future.

This is one of my favourite stories from the whole Silmarillion. I just love the ambiguity of it. Eöl and Maeglin are such fascinating characters to me. For me, they are in the same vein as characters like Saruman, Gollum or Denethor, flawed beings that eventually, due to those flaws and to circumstances, fell into darkness. Of course, they are not nice people, but that is part of the reason I find them so compelling, as they allow me to explore and wonder about the root and nature of evil, which is one of the main topics of Tolkien's work. Many people tend to dismiss Tolkien by arguing that their characters lack depth, and I never had that impression at all. Actually, I love the way he describes a character in only a few sentences or paragraphs and, although on a first, quick reading it can be very easy to dismiss them as a "good" or "bad", once you pay attention to the details you discover a lot of nuances that reveal that it is not so black and white. I think Eöl is one of the finest examples of this.

Beautiful video! Completely enjoyed it. I think that Maeglin was much worse than his father, though. Eol had his faults, the same haughty pride that other elves of Beleriand displayed (like Thingol) was equally bad in him. His grievances against the Noldor were unjustified though I understand how he must have felt. His family ran away from him and then he is told that he can never be free or leave the city again?! Shouldn't they have warned him about this law before letting him in? That seems wrong to me. Maybe it would have ended peacefully if he had not gone inside Gondolin.

I do want to add that he sounds extremely abusive, he didn't get along with thingol and thats why he went to live alone and get lost in his craft, so he's already hard to get along with it seems, he takes advantage of aredhel when she's alone and vulnerable, then separates her from her people to make himself all she has, this is basically the cycle of abuse, when she's all his he forbids her to leave Their child has to convince her to leave she doesn't choose to do so on her own I don't know how many years she was with him because he sounds utterly awful, maybe he really hated noldor and he took it out on aredhel, maybe the news of the kinslaying drove him mad and gave him several mental disorders which can explain why he didn't get along with his people and wanted to live in darkness, however u put it he abused aredhel to the point where she had no self worth left. She convinces her brother to have mercy and she dies to save her son, she's not thinking for herself still. He wants to let her die because he didn't get his way so now no one can. I think this was the darkness galadriel saw in feanor, idk they're both skilled smiths with a meanstreak soo cool but so abusive

This is officially my favorite story of Arda!!! It was like reading fan fiction but IT WAS REALLY PART OF THE STORY. One of the few in my opinion that didn’t really involve either dark lord or great spirit. Instead, it was a story about an oddball who had great skill and potential but fell into bitterness and the desire for control. Love it!

Dearest GZ! Absolutely wonderful gift of storytelling! Eöl suffering from such immeasurable loss and pain. Finding comfort amongst dwarves and desperately controlling everyone within his grasp. His story is tragic and you teased us with one heck of a cliffhanger! 👏 I do have a question unrelated to the twisted soul and life of Eöl. Is there anything in Tolkien's writings that reference the creation of Hobbits? Could they be a type of "natural creation" arriving alongside herbs, flowers and animals. They seem particularly in tune with nature. Not likely to seek adventure and generally content with their lot in life. Proud to say my husband and I have purchased a 1977 edition of The Silmarillion. We will be reviewing your videos that correspond with the legends contained within it 💗 for deeper innerstanding.

They don't call him the Dark Elf for nothing. Eol is the elven paragon of spite as Feanor is the elven paragon pride in the Legendarium. I hear he is making galvorn power armor with Feanor for the Host of the Valar for use in the Last Battle. It is said that Namo had to create the largest space in all of the Halls of Mandos to contain the egos of Feanor and Eol in one workspace. They still have not spoken directly to one another yet, but Nienna notes that their work progresses well in spite of the lack of communication and hopes that in the next millennia or two they might be open to conversation.

I have a theory. Why did anything assiciated with Aule/Earth such as Sauron, Saruman and The Noldor elves the most easily corrupted by Morgoth?
@samuelvine
3 жыл бұрын
Maybe because using a forge is a more violent act than some other of the activities of the Valar. It delved deeply into fire and if I remember right both fire and ice, the extremes of the Earth, had been partially created by Melkor/Morgoth. Aule himself would likely have been immune to the temptations since he was a loyal Valar but his creations and aids wouldn't necessarily be as strong emotionally to withstand the constant barrage of magic that lies in the fires of forges. You'd think this would apply equally to Dwarves since they specialized in smithing but as shown in the LOTR the Dwarves were extraordinarily resilient to the temptations of Sauron's rings of power. The reason for this I believe is that the Dwarves were created out of stone and then brought to life. This would have made them exceptionally resilient spiritually as well as physically so I imagine they had a natural resistance to the temptation of the flames.
@GeekZoneMT

I actually mentioned that in my last video :) How beings that are associated with the act of creation also seem more prone to corruption! Someday I might discuss it in its own video, because it would be quite an interesting topic!

It's axiomatic that people with great passion and skill with crafts and creating tend to love control and perfection and tend to be extreme and obsessive/compulsive. These tendencies can often become blinders to moral direction, driving folly until it becomes too late to correct course. And the act of creation is itself a sheer act of will, and so also do individuals with more powerful wills tend to be, well, willful. Because of this they delve more often into grayness than is good for them until darkness is no longer taboo, deceiving themselves that the end can justify the means or that they have control so it'll be okay. But they don't have control and it won't be okay, but there is often little chance of convincing such driven personalities.

Eöl's reclusive personality and getting along with the dwarfs better than his own kin is not a problem, some people usually prefers to be alone and just because you are blood related to a grup of people dosen't mean that you have to get along with them. I can even understan him having some resentment with the noldor however he allowed himself to be blinded and consumed by hatred and this hatred ended upp being stronger than the love he had for his family. He had the chanse to live with his family on Gondolin and even perhaps improve his relashionship with his son and let go of his anger. But instead he chose to let his wife die and atempted to kill his own son with was a point of no return. He decided that hating the Noldor was more important than his family.
@shomiiii96

I mostly agree with you, but, keep in mind that Eöl disliked the glimmer of Elvish cities, and he moved to the dark forest where he found peace. Eöl might have been driven mad by the exact difference between Gondolin and his home.. I don't really know, but Tolkien never mentioned directly what had influenced Eöl's mind and his decisions

Sounds like King Turgon has never heard "Give me liberty or give me death". Earthly authority without recognition of legitimacy amounts to tyranny. I mean I'd skip the killing the wife part, but jeez it might've crossed my mind to heave the ol' spear at Turgon after the insults, refusing to negotiate, then "Oh by the way you can't leave". It's hard to believe this is the rant I find myself in when being a Tolkien fan and an almost Libertarian, strange. Sic Semper Tyrannis
