Echoing the sentiment here, re looking to clan heritage. My Dad was from Glasgow, with heelan' ancestry. Shortly after WW2 there was an upsurge in Scottish identity (not Scots Nats, though, he saw that as an Edinburgh thing). So, he and his brothers pooled 5 shillings for a book on clan history. I've seen an Italian Rossi saying the Earls of Ross were his ancestor, so it can get dicey over here with the name changes on entry (many Rossi's changing their names to Ross) or Andersens changing over to Andersons, all the way to German Name Adoptions in Germany predating the US even. However given there was 2 Highland Clearances, allot of People in the US are Descendants of the Clans. Take Washington and those times, 12 out of 13 Governors who all rebelled were of Scottish Descent, and Washington was Surrounded by Clan Ross, wheather his Personal Land Lawyer Senator James Ross, or Continental Col. George Ross last to sign the Declaration of Independence by Date, or his Nephew with his many surviving letters back and forth to the founding fathers, or his Wife Betsy Ross 1st to make the US's Official Flag, or a John Ross who gave up his personal Treasury as Down Deposit to our Cousins the French Crown (they had a Queen Ross, as with the 1st Stuart King) and started the US 1st International Relationship, as with many other Ross' in the War Effort, some even in the British Isles! And I'll tell you one thing, it wasn't a bunch of English Mon Fighting the English Crown to Form the United State of America, it was all the People the English and the Turncoat Low Landers Ran Out! As stated to Conquer the Highlands, and send a Savage People to Conquer the Savage Americas! Accept we Conquered it for Ourselves! So by Your "Conquering of the Highlands" and the Highland People, was it worth Losing your Empire over? And being Replaced by US? Was it worth it? What you thought Ross was going to stand for that, and just take it lying down? Ha! How did that Work Out? Ya Low Landers!

I’m a MacDougall from Cape Breton and have to say I think the main use for clan identity here is to 1. Have something to represent your family, as family ties are important here, and 2. Have something to maintain our connection to Scotland, which the people here have never really forgotten

living in Appalachia where lots of Scottish families settled, I can back this up. We aren't Scottish ourselves, not for many generations now, but it's important to remember our roots and our connection to Scotland and recognizing one's clan helps with that.

Schools and colleges only focus on the basics. Even the advanced stuff is still basic. It's just to give you a general idea about a subject. However, I have found that history buffs are indispensable. They are often so willing to dig so far into a subject that when they're serious and not a bladder full of hot air know it all, they have learned way more about the subject and it seems like they're always digging to find more and learn more. I took world history in school, aced it. It was basic. They touched on British history but as you can imagine it was only centralized on English history as the chief focal point. A lot of Egypt and Rome and Greece but that was about it. He's from Scotland so he has a chance to find out from people the pieces of history that were not always passed down to us here in America. For us here, it's not to feel like a separate entity. Just like he said he felt something special about the place he was in, we feel that when we go to the highland games ans such. It's the connection. It's that I'm with like minded people interested in these parts of Scotland and I'm proud of this connection and I'm proud of them no matter their clan of interest and together we are interested in beautiful Scotland. Kind of like the United States it's self. Many states, all of us American brothers and sisters (Even if we drag each other through the mud politically, they are still my fellow Americans.).

Thanks for this video. As a descendant of Maccus of Well as well as several Stuarts and the Bruces, this gives me a perspective on the genealogy of my family. With hundreds of years of Maxwells in the mix, along with Stuarts and Bruces, this provides a perspective to me that we are descended from Scots, and delving deeper is like tracing the lineage from muons or bosons or possibly even quarks. That is up until the highland clearances, but is now under MacLean ownership after WW2. Named after the great warrior gillean of the battle-axe.

My maternal grandparents arrived here fairly late from England and were of German ancestry. I’m extremely proud of my Scottish ancestry and had the EXTREME pleasure of being able to visit Scotland. This is nonsense. ** Let's start at the beginning: The English king at the time of Malcolm IV was Henry II NOT Henry III. ** Then there is the matter of Somerled. He was not a Dalriadan Scot - he was a Viking. You as a so-called scientist should know all about the DNA of the MacDonald chiefs to this day. ** Third: At the time in question the Western Isles were NOT part of Scotland. Notionally at least they were part of Norway (it was less than 70 years since Magnus Barelegs had reasserted his suzerainty). The Isles were not to be transferred to Scotland until after the Battle of Largs - Ahem... some 99 years after the death of Malcolm IV and 100 AFTER the death of Somerled. ** The kings of Scots lands in England were held at the discretion of the English king - not "Dei Gratia". ** Errr I could go on....

Good historiography is like taking road directions from a gentleman in rural Ireland; ‘Sure, I wouldn’t start from here’ Indeed, I wouldn’t start from here; For if we are all children of one progenitor clan, then too we must all be children one island - a story interwoven with industry and blood and kin and kith with the English, unions of Crowns and of the Parliaments, or even just unions of my Scottish father, and his Welsh secretary at work that they begat. So then, when we speak of Edith Cavell and proffer with her story a thousand caveats of rarity for her being a specifically English story and pretend the BBC’s never been to the Highlands - she isn’t, alas, she is, for all her efforts and who she helped along the way - a British story, a European story, and as you stood by her in Australia, an ANZAC and Commonwealth story, and yes - as we all watch you and your brilliant videos: A global story. You’re a bloody brilliant story teller - I hope my future children one day watch your channel, I’ll never force it on them, but I might leave it on in the background once or twice.

I think the whole fascination with clan heritage is rooted in a basic human psychological need to belong (Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.) We see it in sports team affiliation, nationalistic holiday celebrations, trade unions, clubs, and teen gangs. I personally find it problematic to align with one clan because I have Leitch, Macdonald, McCannell, and Black on one side and McKeller, Macinnes, Morrison, and Brough on the other. Just to name a few. It’s easier in my mind to think of them as a melange of Highland and Hebridean ancestors.

My great grandmother’s maiden name was Anderson. Now I know I’m not a true member of the Anderson clan or anything, hell I’m not even close to being Scottish, but I did use my connection to this clan to buy a nice warm Anderson tartan patterned scarf I wear every winter. I could have picked any pattern, but I like that my family has some connection to it, even if it’s only a small connection on my mother’s side.

I mentioned that a DNA test linked me back to Somerled. I looked at you store and saw the Inventor’s hoodie about “phone a Scot.” My father, George Sweigert, invented and has the patent on the Cordless telephone. I walked around Euclid, Ohio as a teen saying Hello Test 123 into his Extensaphone, in 1967. , Ohio

My ancestors. I decend from Macdonald's of Sleat, Glengarry, and Ragnhall of Castle Tioram. Looking at my family tree is almost impossible to be a Macdonald without having Stewart or MacLeod ancestors as well. My 15th great grandmother Flora Macdonald of Glengarry married to Murdo MacLeod VIII of Gesto was decent of John Macdonald Lord of the Isles and Margaret Stewart daughter of King Robert II. Millions of us around the world. Most dont even know who they are. I bet even Bruce is decendant from Robert II.

I'm a MacFarlane . Do you have a video on Clan MacFarlane ? There is a great book called The History of Clan MacFarlane by James MacFarlane that you should read. It's available from the Library of Congress . Clan MacFarlane (Scottish Gaelic: Clann Phàrlain [ˈkʰl̪ˠãũn̪ˠ ˈfaːrˠl̪ˠɛn]) is a Highland Scottish clan. Descended from the medieval Earls of Lennox, the MacFarlanes occupied the land forming the western shore of Loch Lomond from Tarbet up-wards. There is also mention of a John of Islay in their genealogical records.Cousins !

A'reyt Bruce. One of those condemned to be English salutes you. Nice to learn this stuff. It made me think I recently saw a video of the current UK PM being descended from royals too (I will let others infer what they like). Imagine, just with Yorkshire your population would double. Emmerdale and Coronation street accents as Scottish and not even a mention of Geordie yet. The England football team had four Yorkshire players in the Euros, but imagine Rugby League as the National sport like Australia. The best bit would be having Clan Arkwright and Clan Sidebottom trying to trace back to Eric Bloodaxe. Who would get scousers, the Englishman, the Welshman or the Scotsman? No joke, it would defy your laws of physics.

@@ScotlandHistoryTours Years back two Scottish RU Student players took exception to my England RL replica shirt in a bar in Flagstaff Arizona. I am not one to back down, after all I am a northerner, but then they introduced their seven foot Native American friend. I saw films with scalping with tomahawks as a kid and politely said goodnight, after finishing my bottle of Samuel Smith's first. If only my ex RL playing friend Mr McPherson (good Yorkshire name that) had been there to even the odds. You look very much like him by the way.

@@ScotlandHistoryTours Tha's not met my lass. We had a car thief in the back garden. She insisted I catch him as the police missed him. I ended up rugby tackling him through next doors fence and calling back the officer. God knows what she would have done to him if I didn't. I did mend the fence next day. Nearly missed your reply just now as watching Super League Show.
