I MEAN NOT NU METAL, as its plastic with a golden lookin' spray.! Commercial stuff that took ITSELF far too seriously with all the personal angsty crud, pr stupid, arrogant, me-Me-ME domination machismo as the other staple, all with a commercially produced sound that combined a few PROPER METAL bands sounds to create 10 years of boring, generic, rap metal, with a liking for girly sounding singers who can shout a bit too... No offence to Justin! Justin never took himself too seriously in his music and is a different genre, more consistent, quality hard rock and trad. rock.

I forgot to say my main musical point on Nu 'Metal' - almost no, decent, memorable, high speed, high skill GUITAR SOLOS across the whole genre!... How can that be 'Metal'... You'd have to include the Old Metal bands that most influenced Nu Metal to find guitar solos (ie. RATM, Pantera, FNM).. Grunge-wise Soundgarden and Pearl Jam had technically excellent guitarists.. Nu Metal sounds like detuned sampled, over-compressed, over-produced groove-oriented guitar. It's not qll bad but it wasn't very 'metal' to me, but proper metal bands were always around and a new batch of virtuoso METAL GUITARISTS carry the flaming hot metal torch of WILDFIRE!
@kennylaysh2776
2 жыл бұрын
@@PrivateSi that was...a lot of something, in those comments...if you are talking about Linking Park, they didn't call themselves metal or nu-metal. Other people put that on them. Chester and Mike Shinoda considered their music an experimental mashup of styles, hence Chester singing/screams, Mike rapping, a DJ for techno vibes, etc. Mike would laugh really hard if you called his music "nu-metal" to his face. Chester even preferred softer singing songs, and later albums mostly reflected this, outside "Hunting Party" which was a bit harder than normal.

Chester was an incredibly gifted vocalist, a lot of the earlier Linkin Park stuff doesn't showcase his talent but check out the AOL Music Sessions performance of Given Up for probably the best vocal performance of his career, so much passion on display. A 17-second unbroken fry scream straight back into clean high register! 'Nu metal' gets a bad rap (pardon the pun) for being edgy and melodramatic, but it was a counter-movement to the endlessly bright and cheerful pop industry. It's better described as 'alternative rock/metal' like it's generally called now, and it was refreshing for me as an angsty teenager to hear music that acknowledged how I was feeling. For example, number 1 records in 2001 when this song came out included a load of manufactured talent show groups and Bob the Builder. Limp Bizkit caught the wave too but lacked the emotional depth of Linkin Park.

Edgy and melodramatic? That's a better description for emo. NuMetal's more associated with douchey, date-rapey, Brads and Kyles that would have been into Motley Cru and Whitesnake ten years earlier, but couldn't swing the whole brooding-Bohemian thing going on in the 90's, so they just wallowed in suburban ennui instead. A lot of music that is classified as 'nu metal' or 'emo' connects to a lot of people who feel misunderstood, angry and depressed in a way other popular music didn't at the time. It also fused hip hop and more melodic rock and some punk elements which was appealing to people who liked those genres independently and craved something that had a little of everything. I grew up a huge linkin park fan. Meteora was the first album I ever bought. Along with Chris Cornell, Chester is undoubtedly one of the the greatest vocalists of his generation. Incredible range and clarity, and could go from a whisper to screaming with ease. Most fans would agree their early work was their best and that their change in style over the years into more pop driven material was somewhat wasting the talents of the band. However they were perhaps the only nu-metal band that moved with the times and chose not to remain a product of 2001. Also any artist that writes for themselves and doesn’t change their sound based on what others think about them has my respect. You cannot dictate creativity and LP never let that happen to them. I encourage anyone out there to take a deep dive into the LP catalog. From the heavier angst filled early work to the experimental concept work, to some of the more reflective, emotional songs in their later work.

My very first gig was Metallica at the RDS in Dublin back in 2003 with supporting acts, none other than The Darkness and Linkin Park (technically making The Darkness the first live band I ever saw). It was a great gig, cheers for the memories Justin.

I think In the End is transcendent as a song. hundreds of years from now. people will always remember that melody and hell even lyrics. Even if civilization dies out and band names are forgotten. People will likely be born knowing it like it always existed. transcending into almost folk music that we learn in our youth. Like Stairway to Heaven, or Purple Haze, or anything by the Beatles

When you mentioned the fact that he disliked the song, a thought came to mind. Could you please do a video on Jani Lane/Warrant and their two songs Cherry Pie/Uncle Tom's Cabin? He really hated the fact that he was known as "the Cherry Pie guy" and the record was supposed to be called Uncle Tom's Cabin. Could make a fun video. Anyways, keep em coming, much love from Romania!

This is a great record, Meteora and Minutes to Midnight as well. I always thought that Linkin Park were a bit more intelligent than the jock end of nu-metal and thought about the overall product and image in a more mature manner. I was 14 in 2001 when nu-metal was at its height, and while I eventually went towards extreme metal, I saw a lot of their legacy in how the emo bands tended to write songs and lyrics.

I am by no means a Nu Metal fan, but this is what's known in the industry as a Fuh Kin Choon! The entire feel of the song is palpable and rings a bell with the disaffected and disillusioned masses that were created at the beginning of this century. Goosebumps and tears go hand in hand with this imo

It's funny you're wondering where the harmonies are, Justin. I heard or saw somewhere that Chester's voice, when analyzed with the right equipment, is like two voices singing at once, so in effect harmonizing with itself. I loved Hybrid Theory when it came out, but never really cared for much that came afterward. But in hindsight, their second album is still worth going back to if you're in need of more of that Hybrid Theory sound, just not as good.

I always found their music interesting, but didn't really follow them. Although their outstanding musicianship is evident at some point they became formulaic. I love a bunch of their songs, but it's also something I wouldn't choose to listen to often. Much love to you Mr. Hawkins

Normally, it wouldn't be my cup-o-tea, either, and at first I disregarded them as POD-wanna-bes (I did get into POD after their first two albums). But when I read Neil Peart's book about his North American roadtrip after losing wife and daughter, I had to pay closer attention. He credits LPs music with helping him get through his initial grief. And he's Neil Peart, so I took the band and their music more seriously. Chester's pain really comes through his vocal performances, both live and in studio. He was a phenomenal talent. And to say this music is not my MOM's cup of tea would be a gross understatement. BUT to her credit, when she was dying of cancer, she watched their live DVD with my daughters and I. She had nothing but good things to say about it :o

I don’t know why, but Linkin Park were my favourite band when I was younger. While I now recognise that their music isn’t exactly astounding, they helped pave the way for me to develop my own taste in music independent from my parents. Something else I’ve noticed is that because their music blended genres so much, my personal taste is here there and everywhere.
