this is why I'm moving away from whoop. Had the 3 for the past year, it was clearly very accurate. However, because it's a subscription model, the strap itself often dies for no reason (maybe 3 times in the past year, and that means sending it back and getting another one...I live really close to their HQ and it still shaves off roughly a week), among other big issues. Check out their subreddit to see how the gripes are...pretty big ones. I've been looking up videos like this one to compare the whoop to maybe the garmin venu2 or some other options.

had the 3 for the past year and was surprised by this too because the strap I had was clearly cheaply made and you're paying for an app. Broke (as in spontaneously died and needed to be sent back and sent a new one) 3x in the year (1wk lost each time) and then it was laughably inaccurate in hr.

Nice video, thanks :) 1) Since you do a multiple correlations on a very high number of parameters, you should get some false positives just because of random. 2) How wide are confidence intervals for these correlations? Some of them might be like 0.1 - 0.9 and doesnt mean anything. 3) I see some pretty inaccurate parameters with correlations. Like REM sleep. We all know wrist/finger data cant accurately calculate sleep stages. This correlation seems to be misleading... 4) some of variables is just a index of other variables and will correlate anyway, because accuracy of HR between devices is good enough and HR is included in most of indexes. 5) correlation assumes linear relationship, but i dont think that will apply to all variables and some associations will be missed (false negative). I understand the idea behind - rapid check for a lot of parameters and to find some ideas to check, but i think it worth to exclude innacurate measurements (like sleep stages from wrist devices) to be confident in checking variables with good accuracy and signal-to-noise ratio.
@TheQuantifiedScientist

Hi Max! Thanks for your thoughtful comment, and these address a lot of points I am considering myself. In the end, it boils down to: what is a reasonable thing I can do with the data I have and the time I have to spend. If it were a scientific study I wanted to publish, I could spend tons of time on this, collecting data from multiple sources and people, manually filtering out variables, doing many checks, etc. However, since I make 1 KZitem video per week, I have to be practical as well 😉 (1) Yes, for sure. I considered doing some multiple testing correction. However, there are a lot of correlations that are high because of point (4) you mentioned. In the end, I decided to have the network try to filter out the highest correlations/redundant variables and ust look at the overview. I just wanted a general impression (2) Given the large amount of variables and relatively low number of observations (a bit less than a year's worth of data, with some missing days), there will for sure be false positives. Again, though, I want a general impression. (3) Yes, that is true. However, the trends for Whoop sleep stage tracking seem relatively reliable. Again, it is definitely not perfect. I just wanted to point out the most interesting observations. It is not a "publication-ready" result by any means. (4) See point (1) (5) For sure, that is what I mentioned in the limitations to some degree. In the end, I wanted to evaluate some interesting relationships, and get some feeling for the data. Given the time I had to spend on this (~25h for the video from start-to-finish), this was the best I could do. I am satisfied with the results given those constraints, and I believe it is a worthwhile video. I think the general conclusions stand, though specifics might later turn out to be false positives. Again, I could chose to make just 1 video per month, and dive deeper. However, I believe the current frequency of one video per week provides the best quality-quantity combination. Thanks Max for your thoughts 😊 Have a great day!

Exceptional deep dive into the different metrics. On my basic level, is there an overall issue with the relationship between the metrics (presumably this is the algorithm) and the potential for variability? You covered the hr during exercise, and presented the .95 and .7 , which seems okay (and you suggested as such). However if I am looking at the overall situation presented by the "health monitor", I find it difficult to know where I am at physically, given the potential variance within the metrics versus actual, and the feedback I get. Any thoughts? (From someone clever (You) to someone not so (me)).

Hello The Quantified Scientist, thanks for your videos, they are always very informative. I have a question about the whoop. I have been wearing the 3.0 strap since December 2020 on my wrist. The bend has been pretty consistent and the data was pretty similar until July 2021. During this time I saw a quite substantial drop in daily HR average, which resulted in lower daily strain scores and calories consumed. The bend also showed some difficulty in detecting activities as it was doing before. When I contacted Whoop customer support they said that the change in data was mostly due to the position of the bend and the noise in the data collection. They recommended moving the strap onto my bicep and they send me the appropriate strap. It’s now been a few weeks wearing the bicep strap and they confirmed that the data is clear, but the values have not changed. My daily HR average is constantly in the low 50 bpm and my strain is much lower that it was. I just do t understand the sudden change in data after 8 months of constant readings. Have you seen anything like it in your tests/experience? Any advice? Thanks!

@@TheQuantifiedScientist getting a kickback for sales of a product you are reviewing is still a conflict.

@@veloxsouth Yes, of course, had this been a published scientific paper, this would be listed. With the link I mention it is an affiliate link, like I have in all my videos. In the end it is a matter of where you draw the line of what is ethical. I have decided not to take direct sponsorships from the companies I am reviewing, and decided that this (affiliate links) is an acceptable income stream, since I do not feel it affects the conclusions of my videos. Of course, if you feel this is not correct, this is your good right. In the end there are also many indirect influences on reviews in general: e.g. a negative review generally gets more dislikes, or some reviewers get to borrow products from manufacturers before release. (I have no problems with the latter BTW) Everyone draws the line somewhere, and it is an interesting discussion. Have a great day!
