In this video, Dan Krutka & Mark Hlavacik of the University of North discuss how social studies educators have often used deliberation as the model for class discussion or communicating conclusions in an inquiry lesson, argue that litigation is more appropriate for critical inquiry, and review Martin Luther King's 1963 Letter from Birmingham Jail as a rejection of a call for deliberation by 8 white clergy. Like King, we believe social studies educators should reject deliberative framings to address issues of justice.
